Ah, Jeanie, thank you for another lovely video. Seeing old Ubud in all it’s uncluttered glory, is light at the end of the tunnel. For those of us in Australia suffering the stress of our endless lockdowns , a visit with you is as refreshing as guided meditation. …. A fun fact about how Bebek got it’s name ; it is “;sound echoing the sense”. If you say it fast, “Bebek - Bebek - Bebek “, you hear the Quacking of the duck.

I was married in Bali in 1996 and lived in Ubud for about 3 months. Ubud back then was a MAGICAL place !!! Traffic was 2 ways on Monkey Forest Road and there were still rice fields along the road. There were no international shops and it had a distinctive Bali vibe everywhere. Mrs. Canderi had the first home stay at the top of the road , close by Jalan Raya that she opened in 1973. She was an amazing person !!! It was always an adventure going to a restaurant- they were all good . In particular Cafe Wayan, Murnis Warung and Iba Okra’s Babi Guling were OUTSTANDING !!!!!!

Many foreign tourists didn't get to try authentic Balinese food as restaurants & hotels tend to serve the less spicy and halal Indonesian food like nasi /mee goreng, bakso, satay ayam / sapi to cater also for foreign / domestic tourists.
Besides Sambal Matah which is also a favorite of mine, the sambal merah serve with Ikan bakar & fried ayam/bebek betutu, sate lilit (spicy fish satay) and Myuair Nyat Nyat can also be also spicy and flavourful. Best to try Balinese nasi campur in local warung, you can then try some of the aforementioned dishes.

I’ve been to your last restaurant when it was very busy indeed and Vitaly is correct. It’s very touristic. And buses full of tourists would arrive every hour. I prefer a little local warung for authentic spicy food@ a fraction of the cost.
I love Ubud but over the years it has become far too busy with the Yoga ego culture taking over its authenticity.
I think the pandemic would have restored some of its originality perhaps. Let’s hope it stays that way.

Nice vlog! What vacation ending? you're on perpetual vacation in Bali! Just different place. I love Ubud, the surroundings and it is central to other parts of Bali. And sambal matah. ..ooooh i can eat plain nasi putih with just sambal matah. Nothing else needed. Everywhere in Bali is less touristy now. I don't mean to bask in the current situation, but Bali is as beautiful as ever and now it has become as peaceful & serene as it once was. Seriously, a good time to be there.

This is one of the hidden gem temples around Ubud, including Yeh Pulu, Pura Tirta Sudamala, Genah Melukat Sebatu, that see mostly locals carrying out rituals and very few tourists visiting.
Do note that there is a Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring (near Tirtal Empul) and this one is Gunung Kawi Sebatu (not far from Tegalalang) as google & inexperienced guides may mix up the two places.
This temple has 2 specific things I was told about, The millennium-old Shrine Tower has Buddha and Hindu gods in the carving. Secondly, there is a mystical big white eel in the pond, you have to wait for it to come out. Lastly, in the later afternoon, local men and women will come to shower in dozen of small spring water ponds. It's a rather local place.

No, not really. Bali and the Indonesian government really don't care who comes so long as they spend. Sadly the tourism policy is this: bring as many people as possible. And the Balinese are largely oblivious and indifferent to the growing destruction of their island while only a minute few get wealthy.
