This would have to be one of your best videos so far and I think your videos are great. I love how you have ranked them according to how both actresses interact with each other onscreen in their respective, as opposed to simply focusing on one actress over another. I totally agree with your order. I would definitely have Bancroft and Duke at number 1. What I would give to have been able to see these two great actresses perform Annie and Helen on stage. Leigh and Hunter also rank very highly on my list too. Bravo to you and and thank you. 😊😊
Thank you so much! I too would have loved to have seen both of those duos on the stage. I can only imagine what it must have been like to watch the power of that dinner scene performed live!
Loved this video. I didn't like Vivian Leigh until I saw her in 'A Streetcar Name Desire' and then it clicked. I all of a sudden liked everything shes done.
Thank you! She won for two of the most iconic roles in film history - quite an achievement.
I used to say Gone With The Wind was Vivien's best performance ever until I saw A Streetcar Named Desire. I suspect many do too.
Bancroft and Duke, amazing both in that fight scene
I can only imagine what it must have been like watching them do this on the Broadway stage.
Can you imagine doing that scene night after night on the stage?
@@kellie-nd1yp I read that both suffered injuries - that production required added insurance!
That makes sense. It must be grueling.
But Duke wasn’t a supporting actress she was co-lead!
Nice ranking and a reminder of these awesome duos. As long as Shakespeare is near the bottom where it belongs I'm happy. The battle of wills in The Miracle Worker is the length of Dame Dench's entire screen time.
LOL - you're right! Great observation!
Whoa!
I have a little sugestion for your next video:
Actors who won multiple oscars working for the same Director.
From i all know this only happend 4 times.
Definitely worth researching. I appreciate your input.
@@oscarman42 You're Wellcome
Love your ranking. The top 4 are non-negotiable imo. It seems Vivian Leigh has a way of lifting up the performances of her costars.
That Sandy Dennis screen test, wow!! 😮
Right? Two iconic performances that also won for her co-stars (I thought about that after I completed the video). Dennis was as good in her screen test as she was in the film!
My top 3 are
Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke
Cher and Olympia Dukakis
Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis
The rest I agree with the order you put them in .
Cher/Olympia would have been higher if only...
Olympia literally lived in Rose’s skin . I think her performance felt that real.
@@kellie-nd1yp As soon as I saw the film I said "She'll win the Oscar."
As much as I like the other actresses the considered I can’t see anyone but Olympia playing Rose .
@@kellie-nd1yp Absolutely!
LOVED The Miracle Worker. Superb performances by both!
Unequaled in terms of power and pathos. Superb indeed!
I'm saying Vivien and Hattie without even watching this! Some were pretty good but these two were the best of the best
They were an iconic duo!
I wonder how many of the other duos you have seen...
I love Cher and Olympia,Michelle and Jamie Lee,Fay and Bette but especially the 1993 ladies.
Which of these would you say is your #1 duo? Hunter & Paquin?
@@oscarman42 Yes the are undeniable in their respective yrs.
Favorites: Vivien (favorite performance of all time) and Kim in "A Streetcar Named Desire", Vivien and Hattie in "Gone with the Wind, and Bette and Fay in "Jezebel".
Pretty good ranking, agree with! And glad you showed part of the dining room scene from 'The Miracle Worker!', the scene I think clinched them both he Oscars!
That scene remains powerful, even 60 years later. Wish I had been able to see it live on the Broadway stage.
Holly and Anna will be always my favourite Oscar winner duo!
I'm glad they both were honored playing mother-daughter.
I would rank them 1.streetcar, 2.virginia wolf 3.jezebel 4.the miracle worker and shakespeare in love last. Vivien leigh and Kim hunter are the best here in my view.
Streetcar boasted towering performances by all. Maybe I'll do a video ranking Best Actor/Actress nominees :)
@@oscarman42streetcar should have won in all 4 acting categories as I think so many of us have agreed on before. Really a gem of american cinema.
@@oscarman42yes and a video on actress and actor nominees would be interesting.
@@patburke5740 💯
@@patburke5740 I'm thinking of some great nominees!
Another excellent video. I won’t change your rankings.
Thank you! Of course, I enjoy the debates, too. :-)
This is a top tier video. Thank you for giving us this material. Ok, now my favorite...the performances of Elizabeth Taylor and Sandy Dennis as Martha and Honey were just superb. I love the remark of how they could be ranked higher based on her individual performances. Honey clapping and shouting "Violence!" has become a recurrent joke among my friends.
And THANK YOU for including Sandy Dennis screen test. Kinda disappointed is not in the actual movie. Would've been the cherry on top.
Sincerely appreciate your support! I'm doing more videos like this so am looking forward to your future input.
I thought it was a fun find!
It is, it's great you share all this material with us!!@@oscarman42
I think your choices, especially the top three, are spot-on. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke richly deserved their Oscars, despite tough competition (especially from Angela Lansbury).
Bancroft and Duke, to me, are unparalleled in these demanding roles.
You nailed it!
Wow - thank you!
YOUR. BEST VIDEOS. !! FUN
Thank you so much for your continued support!
Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis had an excellent dynamic in EEAAO. Seemed so natural in the different universes they interacted. I love they got Oscars for this roles which are out of conventional. This interesting chemestry you mentioned is why I believe Jamie Lee Curtis managed this win. And sorry, I had to post a different comment for this. Keep it up! Awesome material!
Thank you! All opinions here are valid. I respect your comments, and welcome more from you in the future!
If the criteria is the on-screen relationship between the two characters, then I'd have to go with: 1. Hunter and Paquin. 2. Leigh and McDaniel. 3. Cher and Dukakis
Yes, that is how I ranked each duo.
My top three duos here are: 1. Vivien Leigh and Kim Hunter 2. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke 3. Elizabeth Taylor and Sandy Dennis. I judged this as you defined it based on screentime together. Otherwise, numbers two and three would switch in terms of quality of the film. Thank you, thank you for the screen test of Sandy Dennis for Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf. Wonderful to see!
I was struck by how close her screen test was to her actual performance. Dennis did her homework and demonstrated a solid understanding of the role.
@@oscarman42 Yes, it's true! I think if ever an actress was made for a role, it was Dennis for Honey. Though she gave a few good performances after, she never rose to this level of interpretive perfection. I wouldn't say Oscar curse exactly, but when you've reached those heights, where to go??
I would add, I loved Wendy Hiller in A Man For All Seasons. If ever an actress was lost in the role, as revelation of character, she was, as Moore's wife. But just her luck to compete with Dennis' inimitable performance. No second Oscar
@@williamreed2558 My opinion - which you may not agree with - is that Dennis was often "mannered" in her performances, using the same nervous tics and stutters, which might have worn thin with film audiences.
@@oscarman42 Actually I do agree. Fortunately it suited Honey in VW.
Everyone was made for their rokes in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf!!!
Strongly disagree with your personal top but that's the word, personal.
I think Vivien Leigh is strikingly amazing and, more amazing, two Oscar's and her movie repertoire is not that large at all. Great Actress!!!
Yes - her film resume is not extensive, yet she played two of the most iconic roles in film history.
Taylor and Dennis followed by Hunter and Paquin and then Leigh and Hunter and then Leigh and McDaniel.
Bancroft and Duke = Pure Acting Perfection!!!
Nothing more I can add to that!
The piano ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great pair of performances!
I agree with your top ranking of Bancroft & Duke. I would bump both Taylor & Dennis and Hunter & Paquin higher. But honestly, Dunaway & Straight in Network truly are in the top 3 greatest wins ever of a lead and supporting actress from the same film. I would even say they're #2 after Bancroft & Duke.
Dunaway and Straight would rank high based on their individual performances - but because they did not interact at all in the film, they were not included. Same for Taylor & Dennis - individually excellent, but they weren't a "duo."
What can we say about WAOVW? A movie of excellence with brilliant acting.
The Piano showcased 2 phenomenal performances, one who acted through their mannerisms, their eyes & gestures and a child actor who had to act for the both of them, much deserved.
The same for Bancroft & Duke. I will never forget that dining room scene, for 8 minutes, we watched one of the greatest scenes ever on a movie screen between 2 characters.
Vivien Leigh had 2 movies that earned her and her supporting 2 Oscars.
Next up the men, ex: March & Russell, Heston & Robinson & Murphy & Downey, to name a few! Great video.
As always, thanks for such wonderful input. Yes, the men will be featured in the future.
@@oscarman42 👍I was just talking about Best Actress & Supporting winners from the same movie the other night with my Family & Friends and low & behold you upload the same video. LOL!
@@RobertPagano226 Sometimes I find a psychic connection with the viewers lol. What were their thoughts/opinions? Do share!
@@oscarman42 Of course, I'm more obsessed with the Oscars, than they are, but we did agree Top 3: The Miracle Worker, The Piano & Jezebel, mainly because these had the most interaction between the 2. It was like you couldn't honor one without honoring the other!
@@RobertPagano226 So true. That's why my top ranked performances were just that - a symbiotic relationship between the two actresses.
Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of the best films and one of the Best Picture wins deservingly well
All opinions are valuable, and I respect yours...though I disagree 100%.
Mine is the piano
Definitely a showcase for these two talented actresses.
I'm so happy to see Anne and Patty rank the highest! Their performances are amazing!
Also can we appreciate how Vivien Leigh made the top three for two epic performances?
Two iconic performances by the type of actress who elevated the work of those around her.
Michael, it really doesn't get better than that! Bancroft and Duke are two of the Best Oscar winning performances ever (and faced spectacular competition). Great episode as always 👏
Thank you, as always, friend! No matter how many times I watch The Miracle Worker, I am deeply moved (and awed) by this dynamic pair. I also remain relieved that the studio didn't cast others (Taylor?) just to ensure bigger box office. Others may not agree, but I maintain that the Academy made the right choices.
@@oscarman42 Me too, Bancroft made this role famous on stage and was kinda done with Hollywood, thankfully, Bill Gibson directed and she trusted him wholeheartedly. The decision to also use Duke was wise as she did the play with Bancroft and had that electrifying chemistry.
There is a lot of separating performances from the films themselves here. I am not really a fan of some of them here that many rank as their favorite films. It’s always easier when you love the film too.
Very true. I only ranked these pairs based on their performances (scenes) together. If judged by their respective films, the order would likely have been different.
GO AHEAD SAY IT. ,,,, I WAS THINKING OF A WOMAN NAMED JEZABEL WHO SINNED IN THE EYES OF GOD !!
My #1 choice would have been Hunter & Paquin.
Given that one spoke and one didn't, it really took skill to make their scenes so believable.
@@oscarman42And just a reminder it was the latter’s first ever acting role.
I got maybe 15 minutes into that ALL AT ONCE thing. I hated it ... and I watch EVERYTHING.
I had to watch the entire film for SAG (I actually voted for Yeoh). But it took a lot of effort.
but do you watch it all at once
@@oscarman42 IMO one of the all-time WORST films to win any major awards.
I am glad you went for Yeoh. I have watched it a couple of times now and I love it . I know it’s not for everyone but I am happy her performance wasn’t passed over because of that.
@@kellie-nd1yp Even though I didn't like the film, I thought her performance was excellent. I know the film is a "Love it or Hate it" with many.
Mammy and Scarlett are always the very best of the best. Watching a reinactment of child abuse in "The Miracle Worker" isn't.
How would you have gone about teaching a deaf and blind child with a willful personality how to properly behave at a dinner table?
Ouch@@oscarman42
@@VTMCompany No "ouch" intended. I'm very curious as to how you would have accomplished the same results in a more gentler way that would not be considered "child abuse."
I'm just under the Bette Davis way of thinking that stage performances redone on film aren't the same caliber of acting as original screen roles...they're simply akin to sleepwalking through a performance. Bette felt this way after losing the 1950 Oscar to Judy Holliday.@@oscarman42
@@VTMCompany We'll have to agree to disagree on Bancroft and Duke "sleepwalking" though their respective performances.
Gwenyth and Judi would be at the bottom along with Faye and Beatrice
I know most would have SIL last.
Awe, seeing the first clip of AB and Patty Duke made me cry...This is a great list, thanks for posting, sometimes we forget the great duos and for all the "Bette Davis should have won for Baby Jane"...um...no...There is no acting like The Miracle Worker and both actresses so deserved the awards. And we have Penn to thank for that.
Thank you! I know this is all subjective...that said, I feel strongly that the Bancroft-Duke pairing remains one of the best in Oscar - and film - history.
@@oscarman42 Agreed, 100%
I think that your number 1 is right on target. Patty Duke's performance may be the greatest by a supporting actress ever. I believed every frame of it, and the scene with her at the water pump finally making the connection is one for the ages. It still gives me chills. The two of them together... Well, this is why we go to the movies.
No matter how many times I watch the film I cry. So powerful.
Impossible to beat the Anne Bancroft/Patty Duke combo
I concur! Congrats on your superb video this week!
Moonstruck it's a shame! Detestable characters and just mediocre acting. I hope everyone knows that in the movie they are americans (with italian grandparents) and not italians. In Italy we NEVER use spoon to eat spaghetti or put sugar in the bubbly wine!!
Shakespeare In Love winners got their Oscars thanks to Harvey Weinstein.
Shakespeare In Love victory was all wrong for reasons..
That is not supposed to be
Dench's win was a consolation prize for losing the year before.
@@oscarman42 still underserved win
So we’re just going to completely ignore Duke being a co-lead and NOT a supporting actress? They were both great but the category fraud here is atrocious.
