As always a great list of brilliance in these viewings.
Monique is one of the best performances in the Supp Actress category that was awarded to anyone, top 5 IMO, she was magnificent in a dramatic role which many of us didn't expect from a comedienne.
Taylor, Reed, Theron & Jones showed us how one can transform for a role, although known for their beauty went to the dark side for a character that was startling and unexpected!
All examples shown here is why we go to the movies, to witness a transformation that we wouldn't expect, but glad we did.

You highlighted two of my favorites Catherine Zeta -Jones and Charlize Theron.
    I would add
Cloris Leachman. She was always playing different characters but most probably knew her from her sitcom character by the time she won the Oscar.
Sally Field was an ingenue from fluffy films and a fluffier sitcom to play in grittier projects like Norma Rae
Halle Berry and Brie Larson both took on roles people weren’t sure they could but they fooled them.

Great point about Cloris Leachman, she was definitely known for her comedy work prior to The Last Picture Show where she gives one of the most memorable dramatic performances on film!
I think Sally Field's first major 'against type' role was in the TV film 'Sybil' for which she won an Emmy. Depictions of Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities) don't generally hold up very well in terms of advancing understanding of psychological conditions, but her commitment is very impressive in the role and I think it makes it worth the watch.

Thank you! Ya know, I've always been torn that year. Leigh was excellent, but Jones has one scene (with Lancaster) where she runs an entire gamut of emotions, which I think sealed the win for her.

Shirley Jones did not do a good job in that role. The Director Richard Brooks wanted Piper Laurie. Piper Laurie would have smashed that role. Sure, I’ve heard the story that Richard Brooks saw the rushes and was pleased with what Shirley Jones had given as a performance. But I never believed Jones in that role. Jones had the depth of stepping off a curb.
And Piper Laurie should’ve really played the lead that Jean Simmons had, Sister Sarah Falconer.
I believe Shirley Jones’ acting never approached her beautiful soprano vocal talent. She will always be my favorite film musical leading lady. No, not Barbara Cook. No, not Julie Andrews. Not even Liza Minnelli. (I won’t mention Judy Garland because Judy Garland is the greatest of them all.)

Mo'Nique was probably one of the strongest performances in a drama that I've seen due to the subject matter and she managed to make me feel sorry for her and hate her at the same time. I will say this about the "older" entries is that movies didn't have as much leeway to present provocative subject matter and that's what made Elizabeth Taylor stand out in "Who's Afraid Of Viginia Woolf".

Both great points! Mo'Nique conveyed both the tragedy of her actions as well as her reasons for doing them, rendering her quiet pathetic at film's end. To so convincingly play a character like that who exhibits many of MTM's known friendly qualities outwardly yet is deeply narcissistic in her motivations and is more aware of how she's perceived than of her own behaviour... it was such a balancing act and it comes across as so natural, like we know that person. You’re forgetting that Anne Hathaway was first cast against type in her Oscar-nominated role in Rachel Getting Married where she played a young woman who had a history of drug addictions. In that role, Hathaway showed that she has a dark side so I don’t think her being cast in Les Mis was a cast against type at the time since she already had an Oscar nom on her resume with her dramatic performance in Rachel Getting Married. Come to think of it, I believe she had done a film called Havoc (which I didn’t see) and I believe her role in that was dark and racy, but it was a film a lot of people didn’t see so a lot of people didn’t know she had a dark side to her talent until she did Rachel Getting Married. Same year (1953), same movie ("From here to eternity"): Deborah Kerr as Karen Holmes. Story has it that Joan Crawford was set for the part; for whatever reason, the deal fell through. Kerr's agent pitched her name to Harry Cohn, who - no doubt in his own brand of colorful language - dismissed the idea. Later that day, Cohn told director Fred Zinneman of that absurd idea. Zinneman sensed the value of that surprising bit of casting and overruled Cohn's objection. The result?
