Congratulations, I spent 14 years as a fibreglass technician and this is the first fibreglassing video I have seen on Utube that I agree with completely. The bristle rollers are great. 🤓
That was fascinating to watch. What a great trade skill to have. I can see so many applications for DIY work on RV motorhome shower stalls which are custom spaces and have few lower priced alternatives than buy cheap junk at high prices from a handful of vendors. This will be very useful for making my own custom shower stall!
Great video! Answers a lot of the questions that the forums don't. Like whether you have to let laminates "tack up" between additions or if you can just add all the laminates at once. Thanks a bunch guys!
great information. graphics, diction, and tips are all very valuable. one of the most clear and helpful instructions ever for this process, thanks very much for so much help.
Hi Ray! Its Jim from the meetup yesterday. I've been going over your videos. They have a lot of information to convey but I think just a little jazzing up, and picking up the tempo here and there. well help out greatly.
Great video, explains a lot of questions that I had. Are there schools that I can go to learn more about fiberglass? I am an American living in the Philippines and want to help the Filipinos how to build boats out of fiberglass.
If you need any information or have any problems I can help. I'm retired now but have had almost 50 years experience in all facets of composites. robcain8@hotmail.com I live in Thailand now.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Of all the video's on here, this was the most educating and informative, especially for a newbie like myself. Learned a lot. Will be contacting you in the future.
Thank you, great video very informative and detailed. . Will fiberglass work on thin layers of cardboard. like 5mm thick and 5mm wide circles. And if yes, will it break when bent? I need to cast a 2.5" circle bands that will not break or shatter.. Thanks in advance..
Going to use the roof of a pick up truck as a mould for the interior headliner. Can I use plastic sheeting or cling wrap as a release agent between mould and gel coat or resin?
Hi, please help me, I am a beginner and do not know how to use WAX and PVA. I have tested them but I do not have a good result. l need to know how to use WAX and after how long to use PVA and how many times to apply.
I only have ONE question I hope some help me out: IF have 35.3 OZ = 1000.738 gram or 1 liter RESIN - HOW much Hardener ( catalyst) should I have if be 2% in the RESIN above - ::: is 2 gram or 20 gram to have 2 % ? =
I recently started working for a boat building company in central florida with new ownership. We have a lot of pre release problems. Know one can seem to figure out. Any info or advice? Thank you.
Check your air compressor for oil. Diesel exhaust is another culprit. Gel to highly catalyzed so slow it down to less than 3/4 %. Are you batch mixing the gel or injector? The gel is too highly reactive, who gel are you using. What type of release system are they using? Ray
Gelcoating a mould there is no added wax. Your terminology of 'curing' is incorrect, wax is not added for curing. Wax is added to make it tack free - non tacky. You are thinking of flowcoat which has added wax and is applied on a finished part.
@@frankclarkjr6369 Frank, I repeat you are using the wrong terminology and therefore will confuse people. Resin, gel-coat will cure with or without added wax or added film. It's just not able to be sanded without clogging sandpaper.
So wait I don't understand.. unwaxed resin is that resin without any epoxy or polyester involved right? The hardener and all those catalyst are put aside here init?
I've got a question .I'm in the process of building a mold for a car . since I'll be making fairly large pieces , front and rear end at one time in one piece , I'm concerned about being able to do it all at one time. does the resin allow you , the unwaxed resin , to come back the next day and lay multiple coats of fiberglass mat on it to build up a heavy enough mold so it doesn't move when you break it Loose from the buck.
Rayplex and this vid are good, given what you want to accomplish i'd look at the free libraries on www.freemansupply.com for an easier composite thick mold using their pastes(2 different densities--one looks tan colored the heavier core paste more black in color). Look at their 3 piece mold example. Now if your pockets are deep enough look at www.compositeenvisions.com . I'd use Carbon-Fiber, or their "Reflections" colored CF(composite envisions are the only dealers of this product) this is show class quality. These guys can make any fiber into a "PREPEG"(a refridgerated roll of what ever lenghts u need). Since prepeg is already hardner added only a timed heater unit can set it off so you get max working time. The heaters are the same used in pro paint shops. They can be pre-set to 150 degrees for2 hours then 200 for2 hours then maybe 250 for a hour all preset.
@@rayplexstudios9997 have to disagree with that. In fact the opposite is true. A too thick of an application will cause too much exotherm - heat - and cause shrinkage. It can even demold the laminate from the mould.
@@robertcain3426 I started my fiberglas career in the early fifty's! Made drones for the Navy. We used polyester resin using two different. Catalysts! We generally use it on almost every part where surface finish is not important. If it can stick it will, plus in improves the mould life in a production basis.

Thank you for such an excellent instruction. Quick question, why are portions of audio missing? First one is approximately 29mins 7sec.
Unwaxed resin is for multiple layers. The last layer of glass/resin is waxed so that it can cure without being sticky.
Resin technology today has made that a bi-gone need.
Great video with tips for someone looking to learn more about the fiber glassing process!
How to I contact with this man I am also skill abouts this field

When we hear the word “Mat” does that mean Chopped Strand Mat. (CSM)? Ty
Yes that is correct.
Very useful video, thanks guys.
That is very useful. Where do you get the plywood sheets?
Local lumber yard.
What a dumb ass question!
Excellent job
Is there any epoxy resin that cures only by hit without using catalyzer agent?
What is the proper procedure for disposal?
Should these used brushes and rollers be tossed into the landfill?
Just go dump everything down a storm drain.
none of this is environmentally friendly at all. everything goes to the trash
Thank you. Great video
no wax added in final coat of fiberglass..?
I always put wax in my final layup!
That looks so fun

Will a 1:1 mix ratio epoxy resin for fiberglass onto plywood do the same job as a 2:1 mix ration epoxy?
Yes it should work, we recommend to always do a test piece first.
Awesome thanks. Do you know how many square feet a 2 gallon of 1:1 epoxy resin will do? I'm doing a 2.5ft X 7.5ft sheet of plywood
A litre of mixed resin should cover that area.

THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATIVE VIDEO. QUESTION? WHOULD THE FIBERGLASS RESIN AND MATTES BE ABLE TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE INSIDE OF A PLASTIC BUCKET?
Plastic buckets have become very popular in the last few years. There reusable and cost effective. Yes, the hardened resin once cured will break away.

Try and apply all your layers in one layup. Adding extra layers on top of cured layers can cause distortion or unusual shrinkage. Ray

I think PVA is marketed by creating the fear that your fiberglass will marry. We NEVER used it in our molds. It's just added security that's all.
We generally use it on almost every part where surface finish is not important. If it can stick it will, plus in improves the mould life in a production basis.
