    Great video, this is what I’ve been looking for. I don’t like the router-on-a-sled method especially since I don’t have a router but I do have nice sharp hand planes. Thanks for the video.

    Having all the scarf joints on the panels at the same place is a good recipe for future problems. It forms a nice breaking line.

    • @wulkie
      @wulkie  2 роки тому

      Actually, the scarf line becomes more solid than the ply itself

      No worries. I was very skeptical myself at first. And i tested the strength of the epoxy first so i can remain confident

      I also built 2 canoes with 4mm ply and simply glued the 2 pieces together plus fiberglass band, no scarf join. And they are still standing and doing well

      @@wulkie I've replaced the full interior of a UFO 34, using the techniques of the Gougeon brothers. Scarfing, filleting and much more. It was a ton better than before. My comment was really to hasty, without any thinking. Must be all the years working with epoxy....some minor brain damage maybe? ;-)

    I've got eight scarf joints in two kayaks to build, and I plan to replicate your method. I really like how you matched the angles by planing each side at the same time. Finally, the editing was great to just show us the essence of each step.

    • @wulkie
      @wulkie  5 років тому +1

      I am happy to read that!.
      Before scarfing i aligned the 2 planks and marked a long line with the pencil so that alignment will be kept even after the scarf. Just in case something could go wrong. It worked like a charm.

      @@wulkie Terrific instructional video. Is there a preference of sequence ? Is it okey to first scarf join - then loft the boat plan ?

    • @wulkie

      Sure. You can scarf join both sheets and then loft and cut. I will consider this option for my next one

    I just scrolled through the playlist - and 3 years later, you are still building this. WOW ! Is there a way you have calculated that specific angle while shaving off the edges ? ( at the 0:43 ). Thank you -

      Happy to have you back 😉. The rule of thumb is 1:8 ratio between thickness and the length of the joint. My ply is 6mm so the scarf length is 6x8= 5cm

    Looking for some advice on repairing a broken sailboat mast. I need to patch on about a 4' piece on the bottom. The mast is constructed with spruce using the bird's mouth method. I think some kind of scarf joint would be the strongest, but I'm not sure how to do it for this application. Thoughts? Cheers and thanks in advance!!

      I would say, fit in new piece of wood as fit as possible and glue it with thickened epoxy. If unsure, post a photo on my FB page for a more objective opinion: facebook.com/WulkiesGarage

    At 1:11 We see an outstanding, superlative result!!! I am not understanding how you accomplished this, even after watching the earlier one minute and 10 seconds of the video, as you used nothing to guide your plane except for your freehand use of that wonderful tool!!!

    • @wulkie
      @wulkie  4 роки тому +1

      It is easier tham you think 😋. The ply has many veneers and when planing you start getting multiple horisontal lines. If all are parrallel it means the cut is fine. With the plane you just need a good enough pattern. All the rest will be sanded to perfection. All scarfs went good first time. Just need to make sure they are well fastened so they don't move

      Cou can alternatively use the butt joint which is also super strong but does not look nice. If you can easily hide the joint, i would not go for the scarfjoint. Here is one project where i used the butt joint successfully ua-cam.com/video/SclraG9Rmc4/v-deo.html

  • @erichzann2966

    Does that shorten the overall length? If so, how do you calculate the total amount of 'extra' plywood you would need for two sheets?
    Thank you for the videos, they're awesome!

    • @wulkie
      @wulkie  5 років тому

      Yes. If your scarf is 5cm you need to shorten 2.5 cm from each side. I simply shortened 5cm from the bow pieces. I did not need additional ply.
      Later edit: you add 2.5cm, don't shorten
