My pleasure. Forgot to mention that video was excellent. That boat being dragged through the ground, such a fantastic visual sense in this one overall.
Vintersea bassist/director here - the first critique - the distortion part not being that hard hitting - yeah, we feel that. Huge step up from the first album over all so I'm really happy with everything. The sax influence came more from Ihsahn. I haven't finished watching the reaction yet but it seems like you're enjoying the video, which is rad. We put a huge amount of effort into and really "went for it". Cheers!
Ihsahn is great! As for the video, it was fantastic. Really excellent quality with striking imagery. Definitely elevated the song. Sometimes I'm concentrating too much on the audio to appreciate the videos fully when I do these videos though :)
Great points I think you echo many of the issues we wanted to address in Gravity with Illuminated. I hear lots of the same things as you do especially from a production perspective. The "soft" hit at the transition from the intro to the main song has been a thing and I wasn't really sure how to address it. I didn't notice the stereo width thing on the clean guitar interlude until you mentioned (thanks pal...haha) and I think that really relates back to the heavy guitar tones. Thanks again for such a great reaction / review! It's refreshing to hear constrictive and educated critique! Cheers!
You raised some interesting points. As a casual listener, I didn't notice any of these things until you pointed them out (and some I still don't lol). Glad to see you revisit Vintersea, I knew from your Holy Procession reaction that you'd be happier with a song from Illuminated. This was an entertaining video, thanks for doing it. Edit: on the saxophone thing - I think it was inspired more by Ihsahn, who started including Saxophone on his records from 2010's 'After' (an excellent album that I highly recommend checking out). The band do cite Ihsahn as an influence.
Great analysis of an excellent song and fantastic band. Their songwriting really speaks directly to me emotionally and I've been listening to little else lately!
Always refreshing to get a reaction that views things in a more production-based light. I'm pretty much on board with your critique, I think with a top notch mix/master that these guys would be unstoppable. Anyway, glad your second foray into Vintersea was more favourable.
Very interesting, detailed reaction! I would be interested to see what you have to say about “Old Ones” or “Fiery Tongue” which are from this same album 🤓
Thanks for giving another one of our tracks a go, we appreciate the feedback \m/

It was Rivers of Nihl mostly. At the time they put it back in our heads.
