- Commentary: 'Who determines what's professional?' Black hair shouldn't be a topic for debate.
We live in a diverse world, which means it's a good thing when we scroll through social media or turn on our TVs and see diverse faces. Or diverse hairstyles, like Black natural hair.
The conversation around hair is changing and frankly, it’s taken too long to get here. Perhaps you've noticed Tashara Parker, wearing her hair how she wants to wear her hair.
Just this week, a post of hers went viral with almost 50,000 likes and it sparked a lot of conversation around natural hair.
Overwhelmingly Tashara received a lot of support but still, there are critics.

I definitely don’t understand how someone who doesn’t have hair like me nor know how to care for my hair can tell me what’s professional & what’s not. 🤦🏾♀️
I've never understood how someone's hair determined their professionalism, like it's literally just on top of their head and doesn't effect how they do their job.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽☝🏽
@raymondmullins EXACTLY ‼️💯
When I tell you I am literally in tears watching you speak on this topic. I am speechless of how powerful this was. I lllooovvveee you sister. Wear that crown 👑 and don’t you dare put it down.
I think the pandemic has allowed employees to be more themselves.
Or it has revealed how policed the so called black black community is by other people.

Gurrhl naw!
Shoot, I wake up looking forward to seeing what hairstyle sister girl will have. My wife and I applaud and high five with each new look you give. Not to mention you are my wife's Soror. Keep doing you and showing the diversity that is us, BLACK!
Did you see that she wrote a post asking people for their opinions about her hairdo? I was reading it on Google and she asked for people's opinion. Why do that, then complain when people say how they felt? She wanted the attention. Such a beautiful black woman had to do such foolishness for attention.
@@swenett1308 she wanted to prove a point 🙄
Exactly! Ms. Parker keep being who you are
She is fierce, strong, and beautiful. I'm so happy to see someone I can be proud of on the morning news.
I’m an HR Director. I fully support all
Women wearing their hair in its natural state/style. The only thing not allowed are
Unnatural hair colors ie green, purple, blue etc. I had one manager tell a black woman she could not have blonde hair because it was not natural. I had to pull her into my office and re-educate her. Then I had to have the manager apologized to her, and tell her she could wear her hair blonde if she chooses. It is a natural hair color. I had to point out to the manager that my hair is naturally brown is she going to tell me I have to go brown? I don’t like to think of what was going through her head when she told her to change her hair.
I love this! When I was just 15 or 16, I had my first job at the Warner Brothers Store in the Beverly Center. It was a high school work experience program in which I earned credits toward graduation. I was not being paid, but I was earning credit. I had my hair in very neat, shoulder-length individual braids. The manager, a Caucasian woman, told me that I would be placed to work in stock if I did not remove the braids. Due to her ignorance, I requested that my high school counselor transfer my work experience requirement to the local ROSS Store where I could excel and exude professional excellence in peace without being scrutinized or discriminated against for no reason.
I was told by another black woman who wears ratched colored weaves, that my natural kinks looks unprofessional!
🤣😂🤣
Wowww
You had to put ANOTHER BW..
Ughh ....just had to let wyte ppl know it was 1 blk woman..

@@boxgaming281 how is it being a 🦝 ?
many black women who wear weaves live to shame natural women who embrace their kinks.
@@boxgaming281 what in the F are you talking about??🤔🤦🏾♂️
Who’s to say how she supposed to wear her hair? Let her be who she is without judgement. Maybe the problem isn’t with her but it’s your issue with you. I’m sure you aren’t perfect, we could choose to judge you but we choose to accept you as you.
Well said
Well said my brother..... From another mother.
And not only has her hair professional but she is beautiful... I think it's a lot of jealous women who are commenting on her hair because no man would in his right mind
You’re beautiful BLACK QUEEN
YASSSSS!!!!! I am so grateful for people like Tashara Parker! Because of you I disregarded what my mother said and showed up to my interview wearing my natural crown! I will also be showing up to my first day at work wearing my natural crown. Representation matters and I hope to encourage other little black girls that their hair is beautiful in its natural state and it "professional hair" isn't just straight hair.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽☝🏽❣️💯
Because anything they can’t do they outlaw.... SHAMEFUL 😔😢 And it’s sad... Thank you for addressing it 👍🏾❤️
Very well stated!! I luv your natural hair. I believe in always being authentically you. After all we can only be who we are.
Well said Ms. Parker! It's unfortunate that this is even a topic to be addressed! You and your natural hair are gorgeous! As black women, we need to continue to embrace our natural hair and our creativity with it so the world knows they can't regulate our crown! Keep shining sis!
I just saw you on another video and WOW!!!! Love it. As someone who has been in corporate America for over 10 years, I have seen and heard it all about Black hair, clothes, manner of speech etc.....
I love this!! You are an inspiration! Well done!
I’m in tears. I love your hair and all you are representing.
YOUR BEAUTIFUL CROWN OF GLORY!
YOU'RE CULTURLY ON POINT..
WE ARE PROFESSIONAL IN OUR BLKNESS
OUR BLK IS BEAUTIFUL 😍 ❤
Got an interview for my first part time job soon and I’m worried that my hair would prevent me from getting the job. I have freeform dreads and i’m not sure if my employers would see it as ‘professional’. Hopefully things go well for me.
All your hairstyles are great,I watch almost every day,
Love your hair lady, let all who don't like it go kick rocks.
As long as you like it like u said really we need a law people sometimes are just crazy
Go girl...you are so correct
As a black man I want to grow my hair out but I have an intern at a political internship. I work for a media company, and have leadership roles in 2 organizations. I lead mostly predominantly white groups and some of them will judge you on your hair. I just want to avoid the conflict.
Well she's not avoiding conflict, she's out there taking it on, and I am here for it!
Can I say, JOB WELL DONE QUEEN... They will NEVER understand! We will never be able to function freely (with all our glory) in a place that was never meant for us to be here and to prosper.
Your hair is absolutely fine my dear!!! I wish I could wear my natural hair but I can't because of a medical issue.
I am a self-employed black woman, and I have been wearing my hair natural for several years. Yes, I too get criticized for wearing natural styles, but I will not change who I am just to suit those who disagree with my blackness.
Bill Burr was right, where are the white feminist at?
I am British and thankfully in most organisations however you want to wear your hair is now accepted. We have the Equalities Act (which consolidated other earlier Diversity and Inclusion legislation together under 9 protected characteristics) and in the schools there are now anti hair discrimination policies. There are still some cases of people wanting to touch other peoples hair in the workplace but there are also policies in place which prevent you from invading someone’s personal space. As an ally and D&I advisor I am constantly ensuring that white people are aware of hair discrimination issues. Good work places policies ensure that hair discrimination is fully understood by all.
Hey I'm a big fan
Your hair is always great! Keep shining queen....
I love this, truth has been spoken.
I love 💘 her hair. I would like to know who's her hair tech.
Pass it, SENATE.
As long as it's not a profession that health my be considered to be pulled back or hair net but every style you shown looked professional to me
👏🏾💓👏🏾 Well Said!!

If you interview in a Mohawk bun then they shouldn’t come back later and say change it. Employers determine the guidelines and TX is a right to work state. You can’t fire someone for being in a protected class but you can for not appearing profession to their customer base. Go ahead and pass this into law but it’s only gonna create a competitive hurdle for you. In corporate America, we are all subject to professional judgement, background checks and social media scrutiny....it’s just a fact of life.
Yep because historically its always been white men who determined what was 'professional'. Well, that day has passed. I work in corporate America and have a $2.24M book of business. My clients have seen me rock a faux hawk, an afro, twists, braids, curls and straight hair. Neither hairstyle adversely affects my professionalism.
@@shequitawashington8146 I wish you wouldn’t take this personally. I know there are exceptions such as yourself. All I am saying is the more mandates you put on corporate America to legislate “acceptable” behavior the more likely you are to limit opportunities for those starting out or needing a second chance. It’s the same reason companies have probationary periods....the easier it is to fire someone the more like it is that a company will give you a shot. Assuming you are in favor of performance based tenure. Congrats on your success!
Imagine if they did this, targeting balding white guys. “Balding is unprofessional”....it’s not like people can control the way their hair does or doesn’t grow.
@I Said What I Said. no. He doesn’t get that we are not the problem. This is why I’m not into white guys 🥴
So what's the standard for "professional hair" beyond neat, clean and natural color?
Natural hair? Great! Cheap Dollar Tree nylon weave hair that doesn't fool anyone? Forget it! So annoying....on men especially.
It's not about the hair or race! Showing respect to your employer is key and be knowledgeable on proper work ethics is another! Being professional dress code is a top priority, if you look like you're going to the club then keep the outfit at home!! Respect and if you can't have respect for yourself at least have respect for others!
Is she talking about work clothes or Black hair?
You've got to be kidding me!!! The was BLACK HAIR!!! Its not apart of the dress code.
@@kendriascott6261 sorry! If what I said is beyond what you can fully comprehend!!
@@nicolecole5820 apology not accepted, Karen. If only black CEOs would outlaw straight blond hair for different types of people to fully comprehend the absurdity of this scenario.
In other words “have respect for others by not wearing your natural hair.” 😂🥴
