    Steve Smith do not slam drumkits. He is a real musician that knows what he is doing. All his parts are actually written not improvised.. And why is everybody so bummed about. Steve IS Journey's Drummer

      @Oneness100 8 років тому +4

      +Giovanni Boschini Steve was actually Journey's third drummer, but Ansley was their first real drummer since Prairie Prince was only with them for a very short while, I think 1 gig. I saw Journey way back at one of their first gigs, and it was Ansley.

    • @Oneness100
      @Oneness100 8 років тому

      btsdrummer1 I don't know what the reason why Journey fired Ansley. Maybe it was a personality issue. Ansley got fired from Jefferson Starship as well. I guess he doesn't get along with everyone. Steve's playing is more finesse, as he uses more dynamics and his sense of swing leans more towards jazz and Ansley is more straight. But Ansley came up with a lot of interesting and unique rhythms, and fills that simply made their early stuff great.

      +Oneness100 Aynsley had a bad partying behaviour. I saw it in an interview Herbie Herbert gave to the press a few years ago. He was missing rehearsals for being with chicks all the time

      Giovanni Boschini That's weird. He was with Zappa for years prior to being with Journey and Zappa was strict against partying. Oh well. Yeah, no excuse for missing rehearsals.

    This was about one thing... Getting Steve back with the band to sell a CRAP LOAD of tickets. They approached him and said lets all do one last big tour, make a few million a piece, and retire happy. I would be surprised if there is anything else to it.

    Steve Smith´s present-day drumming is a far cry from his younger years in several ways: a lighter touch, a higher sitting position, a more relaxed approach, lower cymbals. Sure he plays with a lot of economy of motion now, but musically is as effective as usual. Good to know he is back with Journey, though, judging by the look of his face, he doen´t seem to enjoy it as much as before. Nevertheless and undoubtedly, he does a great job!

      He likely doesn’t enjoy it as much as I think he doesn’t consider the material challenging. He’s a monster chops player, has since mastered odd times, Indian classical music, uptempo bebop, modern jazz, and here he is playing arena rock from forty years ago. Just my guess. Smith is a GREAT player.

    First off, I grew up on Steve Smith's drumming in Journey, He was THE one to inspire me to play. From 1979's "Evolution" (Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin') to "Frontier's" (World's Apart) and even a tiny part of "Raised on Radio", it was Smith's drums you heard on the record.
    The main reason I think Steve is playing on this tour is that since Dean was arrested for Domestic Violence a few years ago and is undergoing rehab, and since Smith and Schon have remained friends and still have played together over the years, Smith is doing this as a favor for Schon and the band?? Yes Smith is more a jazz player now and always has been, but this set is using smaller toms with different woods, BUT also remember that these recordings are simple smart phone videos that can't pick up everything. Steve doesn't have go all wild on the drums to get the same sound but it does seem to me that he could put more heart into it?
    I keep seeing Ross Valory come to drum riser a lot and that's usually a sign of the bassist and drummer trying to "Lock Down" the beat and groove. It also seems like Ariel is throwing more and more of the vocals to the crowd and he doesn't have the range and excitement like he used to either?? Some parts could be better, but what the hell do you expect from a band that's almost as old as I am and the members are as old as my parents?? Have a drink, enjoy the music and love it for what it is! Within 10 years, this will all be gone!

      Steve Smith is what I would call "efficient"...he was the original guy that cam up with the drum part for this song, and he appears to be true to it. I loved Deen, but he was very heavy-handed...I called him "Edward DrumstickHands", he was beating the daylights out of his cymbals on every beat. Steve seems to like his cymbals lower in height than he used to. Not that he is vain, but the tall cymbals used to obscure him...now he is very visible.

    Lol... why is Steve's Smith's drumming a problem? If none of you have ever been in an orchestra/marching band or even play proper drums (formal music education, contemporary + classical) then it is best to keep quiet, rather commenting about negatively.
    He knows that slamming the drums does not necessarily produce great sound quality. If you can create something as loud as a hand whip, with only 6 inch of stick height off from the drum heads, then why not? These are the things he already knows from the beginning. There shouldn't be any debate about it.

    Smitty is back...he went back and re-learned all his parts and has kept them pretty spot on to the record. His hat work is not exactly the same (only a drummer would pick this apart) and his feel is not as rock like it was back in '78 (but he was never a pure rock drummer ala Cozy Powell)...on record he plays straight 8th notes on the hats and here he plays more open hats like he did on Only the Young.

    • @bluehornet6752
      @bluehornet6752 8 років тому +1

      +Jeff Porcaro Groove He was never a really HEAVY hitter, but he certainly struck the drums with ample velocity. But he's a fair bit older now than he was in the 1980s, and it's still early in the tour. I think he'll need to get work-hardened to a degree, so there will likely be a change as the tour goes on. The one thing you don't want to see is for him to hurt himself early on, and that can happen if you are hitting too hard all the time. In fact if you watch him play you can see that he's definitely letting the mics do the work. He's not a stupid fellow by any means.
      I love his playing though: Always have, always will. But then again I'm sort of biased as I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours trying to copy his parts as a teenager in the 1980s and 1990s. He always knows just what to play and when to play it.

    • @bluehornet6752

      +Tom B One thing I forgot to say--I'd like to see him go to something a little more aggressive in terms of cymbals. Something like A Customs, or even regular A-series cymbals...like he used to play. This new Zildjian line he's playing sounds incredible, but they don't seem to project as well in the mix...especially the ride cymbal bell. I really miss the sound of his Ping ride from the Escape days.

    • @Joesfosterdogs
      @Joesfosterdogs 8 років тому +1

      He's so ergonomically sound no issue with him hurting himself...he plays almost too relaxed. Watch him play Stone in Love from the PA gig a few days ago. You will almost never see a drummer play his ride so relaxed placing each note on the bell perfectly. Love the "hundred of hours" thing...a fellow thumper!

    Good to see Steve with Journey! I've been to his concert twice, both with his Jazz band. Actually my favorite recording of his then was Jean Luc Ponty's (1976) album and I wasn't familiar with his Journey days contribution nor his Jazz days. Yet, I was blown away in both occasions - I saw Billy Cobham and Steve Gadd at the same place and Steve was easily in the same league with them! Only thing I found 'lacking' was he wasn't really interacting with audience during songs :) He looked very serious and pro. Here, with Journey, I think he IS having fun in his way. See 5:17

      +540allison Steve Smith wasn't Journey's original drummer. Dude, what's your problem? Prairie Prince from the Tubes was the original drummer, but he only did something like 1 gig. Then they got Ansley Dunbar, whom played on many of their first albums and was with them when Perry joined up for several albums. So Ansley was Journey's first drummer. You got to get it together.

    • @samueljanderson
      @samueljanderson 8 років тому

      +Oneness100 This is true. In 1975, Journey released their very first album and Ansley Dunbar was their very first OFFICIAL drummer. Prairie Prince was their first drummer in terms of playing with them, but never wanted to make it official. He turned down the offer and decided to remain in The Tubes instead. I believe he does some art work for Journey on their albums.

    • @Oneness100
      @Oneness100 8 років тому

      Samuel Anderson He does the artwork on drum sets and things like that. I don't think he does the album artwork, they typically had Mouse and Kelley for much of the album art. I don't know if Prairie did any album art, if he did, I don't doubt it, I just never thought he did any. But I do know that he does a lot of art work on drums as that's his specialty. Ansley had one of his earlier kits painted and I'm sure Prairie might have done it. I saw Journey many times in their early years before their first album even got released and I would stand up front very close to the stage. I first saw them play second bill to Mahavishnu with the Tubes opening up and at the time Journey had only played something like 3 or 4 gigs prior and the Tubes were pretty much an unknown band as it was right before they got a lot of radio play. This was in '74.
      I always thought of Ansley as their first REAL drummer due to the first released album, Prairie was just their first drummer that only played a couple of gigs, but was never recorded with them.

      540allison Well, i grew up watching early Journey with Ansley Dunbar, plus Greg Rolie on keyboards and vocals. The albums with Perry added were better than after they replaced Rolie with Cain. So, I actually preferred the early Journey without Perry and then with Perry. After that, they sounded too bubblegum for me. Steve was OK with Journey, I preferred him before Journey when he played with Jean Luc Ponty. As far as a "rock" drummer, I just don't think that's his wheel house, to me, he's a jazz/fusion drummer. Maybe you just never saw early Journey before they added Perry. go back and listen to the early recordings with Perry and Rolie, they had MUCH better background vocals than with Cain. Cain's not a strong singer, IMO, plus he just kind of makes the band a little wimpy side. Plus Cain's not much of a soloist, he's very pedestrian.

He visited a local drum shop years ago and someone asked him about his greatest accomplishment, and it was making a million dollars with Journey. I'm in a cover band and I get bored played journey songs. He's a killer jazz drum and his skill level surpasses what he does in this band who should hang it up.

      There's no way Steve is bored. He wouldn't do the tour if he wasn't all in. He plays in a very compact, economical jazz-like manner now, and lets the drum mics and great Sonor drums do the heavy sound projection. I think it's silly to suggest that he is bored. No need for everyone to get their panties in a twist over it.

    How many more tours will Steve Perry sit out? The whole band is there now! Cain is 67! There can't be many more in the future. Arnel's singing is amazing, but his stage presence is horrible. On some songs, he almost appears bored. Steve...it's TIME!!

    Arnel Pineda is a good singer. The structure of the composition by the song writer is arranged and beautifully created will set any great singer for failure, hence all the others have failed. Arnel still needs to live and support a family While the mighty composer sits on the pulpit eating bombombs collecting royalties. A little help from the person that should understand the scale of the ivory’s and the talent who he creates for could’ve been a better person in general.

      What's wrong with Steve's approach to the drum parts that he composed? They still sound solid. Does it bother you that he's playing the right way now, as opposed to bashing his joints into oblivion like Neil Peart did? He's fine. Give it a rest.

      +michael collums steve smith is one of the best drummers in the WORLD and there is NO ONE more technically precise. never much for flash and style but he is the best pure musician on any stage he steps on. he has toned down his kit so he doesn't have dozens of unnecessary cymbals and over-sized drums. but he hasn't been in a R'N'R environment for a while which is what you are noticing. i will say that i'm a bit confused by his motivation to re-join Journey at this point. perhaps is Perry were to come back and they were to write new music it would make sense. now, without Perry and new music, they are essentially an 80's cover band of their old music. it's purely a money play at this point and not about artistic creativity. i hope that changes.
