If it doesn't adjust with just pulling on the pedal, find the plastic quadrant above the gas pedal, And hold it in position as you pull on the pedal. You will hear it click! And if the pedal still has a little play in it, repeat. Your pedal should be tight with no play even when disengaged!
At first I thought this was going to a long drawn out video...lol...it took you 3 sec. to the job! You had to fill in rest with something..any how I just went outside and did some major mechanics on my 1997 Mustang in 3 sec! Thank you! I needed this because I have been working on some wiring on the car all week..I am a grandma and still working on my own cars..I guess I will have to stop when I get to dam old to drive...I started out working on 280z and 280zx cars, most of the mechanics wouldn't work on those cars so I had to do my own work
I tried that method on my 04 GT, and the pedal wont adjust. A previous owner of my Mustang has evidently changed the cable set up. I'll check for firewall adjuster. Thanks !
But how do you retract it back to the original position when you replace the clutch disk? Mine is adjusted all the way out but I hate the feel of it I feel like the pedal sticks out too much and I want to go back down. Of course I won't replace the cottage before I retract it.
Just for future reference, When it won't adjust by pulling the pedal alone, look above the gas pedal, You will see the plastic quadrant, If your clutch is stock, Push the clutch pedal til the play is out of the pedal, Hold your fingers on the plastic quadrant, And pull up on the pedal. You will hear it click, check your pedal for play, And repeat if there is still play in the pedal. You want your clutch to be tight from top to bottom if that makes since. If the pedal has any light pressure at the top, click the quadrant to the next tooth until there is no play in it.
what was the reason fro trying to adjust the cable? I just had a stage 2 clutch installed, and my pedal feels like its barley there, its super easy to push down and almost feels springy??
if it's above the year 2005 then it's hydraulic clutches which probably need bled. If it's under 05 then it's cable clutches, if you have no clutch pressure that's most like worn clutch plates or bad TOB.
by any chance does your clutch pedal vibrate at all? I put a new clutch from ford racing, and firewall adjuster kit with new cable from steeda. My clutch grabs at the top when it used to grab at the middle with the stock adjuster. Any replies are helpful.
My clutch pedal doesn't vibrate and it seems to me that the clutch should grab down lower than the top ,there are videos on youtube on adjusting clutches with the firewall adjustment setup . good luck
@@cryptical6958 Thanks. My 03 gt has a firewall adjuster. Rarely has to be adjusted. My 97 vert engages High but has no firewall adjustment. It sucks there is no adjustment by the clutch fork or even the pedal.
I am not sure if I got it right... Is this the way you adjust your clutch IF it is a stock one, OR aftermarket one? Very interesting video, thanks!! :) //Stefan from Sweden proud owner of an 99 ford mustang GT - Atlantic Blue.
If you have the stock quadrant under the dash you should be able to adjust it... Look above the gas pedal under the dash, And see if your cable connects to a plastic quadrant or an aluminum one. If it's plastic, You have the factory adjuster still. I just posted a comment on here that works if pulling up on the pedal isn't working.
A properly adjusted pedal engages/disengages the transmission when you slowly let the pedal lift above the floor by about 3 inches or so. Failure to adjust the clutch may eventually keep you from shifting gears or may grind the teeth on the gears, both of which are not good.
Yeah these systems are made of plastic and in my experience rarely last. New ADJUSTABLE clutch cable and quadrant and you should be good to go if you're factory adjustment is worn.
I adjusted my cable and recently had to do some more work on my car. now my clutch goes all the way to the floor and comes up very slow. Is there a way to reverse the adjustment or take away some of that slack?
I'm not sure every make and model of vehicle are different on how they make adjustments to the clutch, in the case of this mustang in the video since its an automatic adjuster and not simply a nut and bolt cable adjustment it cant be reversed .
+CHRIS10077 Guess what I fixed it. My clutch cable actually had so much slack in it that when i adjusted it, that it came out of the clutch fork. I readjusted it and put the cable in the fork and it is nice and tight.. and my car pulls off great.
+CHRIS10077 I love the 289 I was fortunate enough to drive my friends 1966 I loved the idle of that car. My first car is a 2000 V6 hopefully trying to upgrade to a V8 later on but a new edge of course.
I Don't think so unless you have a after market fire wall adjuster installed you will have to adjust the nut found under the plate I took off at the beginning of this video.
Man sorry about that the adjustment must be the same as the 04 by just pulling up on the clutch pedal , unless of course you have a newer cable installed with the firewall adjuster.
I seen this video and thought complete bull shit... Thought what the hell try it... Cost no money or time to try such a simple thing... I'll be damned it works... Thanks big time... Back to racing next weekend... A bit of info for others... 2003 mustang GT... I'm assuming it'll work on all new edge mustang gt's

I was told so many different things I would have to do to adjust the clutch. Thanks, so much for your help. It really worked.
Jerry Anderson Your welcome glad it helped.

A big Thank you sir!😎
Thank you save me a lot of trouble..👍
You sir are a life saver thanks

I meant clutch. Stupid voice to text
You just saved me $1000! I called 5 mechanics about changing the clutch and not one of them mentioned that it was adjustable.
What issue were you having? I only have 67k miles and it feels like I have to drag the clutch forever and it shifts rough
why the clutch pedal its hard wen i press my foot down on my 02 gt
It is pretty normal for these clutches to be stiff because they operate by a cable vs hydraulics.
If i try 2 switch gears wen its on i press the clutch all the way in and it grinds gear wo t go in
If i turn off car and then put it in gear then turn it on it works drives but i wont be able two shift 2 next gear kus it will grind
Could be that the clutch is just worn out and time for a new one.
CHRIS10077 you can put a lil bit of oil to the clutch cable and move the wire up and down befor you put it on that should help bro
After you pull the clutch up n you get the position is it gonna stay or is there a way to set it
I pulled up on my clutch pedal (''04) but it didn't seem to do anything. Do I need to pull harder or something?

Did u figure it out bud?
I know man I've wore myself out before, of course on the fox mustangs gotta reach under there flip a lever and adjust
i was about to do the same thing, jack the car up,glad i found your video THANKS!!!!
How do you adjust where it engages
you'll have to buy an aftermarket adjustable cable or firewall adjuster. Unfortunately, the stock cable setup doesn't allow you to adjust it.
@@cryptical6958 Thanks. My 03 gt has a firewall adjuster. Rarely has to be adjusted. My 97 vert engages High but has no firewall adjustment. It sucks there is no adjustment by the clutch fork or even the pedal.

Hi . what does adjusting the clutch peddle do?

Would it be the same adjustment method for your S550?

CHRIS10077 to my knowledge it's all stock
Toxic Ent okay try pulling up on the clutch pedal and see if that is the adjustment for your 97 mustang.

Do you have to have the key in the car or anything ?
Nope just pull up on the clutch peddle .
Nothing to be upset about now you know and so do we
Probably need a firewall adjuster
so i can theoretically adjust my clutch by side stepping it doing a burn out lol
Sure, and stretch it back out if you do it enough 😂
2001 adjusts same way
You save me thanks
Lol did he really forget camera
