Convenience stores are small retail shops, they sell wide for area goods. They sell everything from food and drinks to snacks, accessories, car maintenance tools and other things. The U.S has over 150,000 convenience stores around the country. The largest is 7-11 franchise. American has a huge driving culture and its very normal to use your cars to commute everywhere. This means gas stations typically open for long period of time. In many cases, gas stations open 24/7, meaning 24 hrs 7 days a week. This makes very convenient for late night drivers. Convenience stores in U.S. might be little bit different than what’s you use to in home country. Typically, convenience stores are paired with gasoline stands. So it’s pretty weird to find convenience stores that doesn’t have gas popup attached, because of this, convenience stores typically are found in the major highways or on the side of the really big roads. It’s really uncommon to see the convenience stores in your neighborhood or on the small alleys and so on. So, for this reason, it’s pretty uncommon to see people walking to visit the convenience store. The best way to get to the convenience store is actually to drive there. The main sources of revenue for most of the convenience stores in the U.S. is gasoline about 96% of total revenue for most convenience stores in the U.S. come from gasoline sales. For the rest of revenue comes from sales goods inside of the stores. Let’s take a look some of the foods you can expect to find in a typical American convenience store. First of all, you can find a huge selection of snacks, foods, and various drinks. People spend about 25 million dollars in 2017 on food inside convenience store. But most of the food you find in the convenience store, it isn’t that nutritious. It’s typically stuff easy to eat while you’re driving, and salads aren’t so easy to eat behind the wheel. But a bag of potato chips and energy drinks are pretty convenient for late night drivers. Well, they might not be the healthy option, they are pretty tasty from time to time. Some classic American convenience store foods what you can always find Slim Jim sausages, pre-made cake and pastries, bags of potato chips and any candy bar you might want.

Thaks for helping me how to pay gasoline. I usually say: 20 dollars in the number 4, but now I know the right way is: 20 dolars on pump number 4. Thanks Alisha I like all your videos; I'm learning English thanks to you. I'm from Mexico

Many convenience stores are walkable if you are in town and not out in a rural area. I'm in a very small town but our conbini is completely walkable. Also, salads are available at most stores now in the "grab and go section" which is an open cooler area with salads, sandwiches, fruits, cheeses, etc.

Good quick video, but I think some things need to be mentioned.
    • Management of a local, or corporate owned convenience store determines the quality of that store, for example poor management equals poor conditions, and vice versa. In other words the standards for each convenience store are different depending on management.
    • In addition to the connection of a Gas Station, some convenience stores are merged with other stores, be it an actual mechanic shop, or a small restaurant, sometimes even having multiple gas pump stations intended for mass customer use, these are mostly called Truck Stops, for aiding and supplying heavier vehicles like Big Rig 18-wheeler trucks.
    • In some unfortunate cases in the U.S. due to local conditions of poor quality of districts, and law, some convenience stores are targeted spots for crime, such as quick stealing of inventory, or quick cash to steal from the register. In these cases, the store attendant will often have a weapon hidden behind the counter for defense purposes, sometimes a pistol sometimes a shotgun, and they are within legal rights to have that.

Probably at least a billion dollar revenue in food alone in Japan. Essential to the economy and culture. You can find real foods like rotisserie boneless chicken, rice balls, and bento boxes, you can pay bills, deliveries, book tickets, municipal services. Anything you expect convenience. You can probably find two stores in every block in a busy commercial district. Few places to throw garbage for the public. 7-Eleven and Lawson were once American icons are dominant in Japan and a few places allow 24hr international bank cards. The background looks like Japan with its buildings.

  • @amb2745

Gas at a convenience store is actually what's called a "loss leader". What that means is that the gas and gas pumps are what brings people to the store. Once there, you're filling up your car with gas, when you see people coming out of the convenience store with food. Convenience stores don't make much money off gas sales, but they can mark up their food products to make up the differences. You then end up getting food from the store. Also, convenience stores are creeping into fast food territory more. One convenienence store chain, Wawa, started selling burgers and fries every day after 4 pm. The burgers are angus beef, which is a higher quality of beef than McDonalds or Burger King.

There are so many kind of goods in Japanese convenience stores. Especially in a big city, you can see more than 10 stores from a station to other station.
Although it is convenient, shop owners have difficulty in managing their shops.
And also, we have problems waste foods so we need solution for that.

Hello Alisha... Interesting video. I didn't know that this kind of store had name. In my country, there is a tendency to copy all things come from USA. The problem is that we are strongly Latin and this means "improvisation". In Chile, we have convenience stores, but into them we find only snacks or icecreams... Thanks a lot.

Unlike US, convenience stores are separate from gas stations in Japan. By and large, they are brighter and cleaner than the US counterparts. They deal in a wide variety of goods/foods like ready-made meals, rice balls, sweets, etc. A growing number of convenience store owners struggle to open their stores 24 hours a day due to labor shortage these days.
