The most remarkable thing about this, watching it so many decades later, is the pacing and length of the bits. They weren't afraid of taking their time and letting a joke build.
Such a great show. I mean just look at the talent they had: Joe Flaherty, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis. I mean wow, just an obscene abundance of talent. Each of them are legends in their own right. Great, great show.
Saturday Night Live skits felt stale and dated in comparison to the creativity you saw on SCTV. When Kids in the Hall cam onboard it was clear there is something in the water producing stellar Canadian talent.
Rest in Peace and Love Joe Flatley! You and the entire SCTV rocked my world back in the day and still do crack me up! Count Floyd thanks for all the Laughs! ❤🎉😂🤣😂🙏🏻
It perfectly captures the way Castle movies (and others) would employ these novelties, offered with the promise of enhancing the movie-going experience, in the lamest possible way.
When I was a kid every local station had a Late Show hosted by a vampire, usually a member of the local stations broadcast staff. I love how they took that concept and made intrepid anchorman Floyd Robertson be "Count Floyd"...lol...he was always trying to sell those 3-d glasses, and over time the price kept going up...this time it was "26 bucks", almost like he wasn't sure if he could maybe get away with a higher price! Hilarious!
Oh my god...Joe Flaherty playing Count Floyd is so brilliant. His constant failure and then reliance on howling and hiding behind his cape - just amazing. I watched this as pre-teen and it absolutely shaped everything about what I wanted to do with comedy. Looking back - its Eugene Levy that I am just astounded by. Every character he created was so strong - and SO many of them.
I watched an interview with a very young Tom Hanks on the set of Splash talking about whether or not he was afraid of the diving scenes, etc. He said no, but he was terrified of working with Candy and Levy. He said they were so good they could “blow me off the screen…with next to no effort”.
@@va3svd When your only claim to fame is co-starring on a show like Bosom Buddies, you could easily be blown away by anyone. But with Candy and Levy, you'd be obliterated. 😆
@@QuadMochaMatti Yeah, but even so young and green he was still Tom Hanks. And the SCTV guys were still young, too. I just thought that offhand comment was such a great tribute to their talent, considering the source.
SCTV brought a new era of comedy; instead of memorizing simple one liners, comedians now created full characters and personalities for their act. It was beautiful. Then, Kids in the Hall came out.
I think maybe the most brilliant thing the SCTV gang did was to often portray characters that in turn are playing other characters. For instance, Woody Tobias Jr. who plays "Bruno", Count Floyd is a character played by Floyd Robertson, etc.
I grew up watching SCTV. I’m 43 now, and for the first time I realize that Candy seems to be doing a sort of Vincent Price impression. Is it just me or was that his intent? 😂❤️
To be fair, SCTV (by the time it was in their sixth season) no longer had most of their cast and had moved to Cinemax. The episodes were good, but you knew it was over. So, unlike Saturday Night Live, SCTV knew when to end.
I'm your waiter Woody Tobias Jr. you probably recognize me as Bruno in the Dr. Tongue film series. This was one of Eugene Levy,s favorite characters opposite John Candy he said. I am busting a gut watching these, when i was young and these were coming on at night i would run home to watch SCTV.Thanks for the video.
Wow, as a native Western Washingtonian, I can't believe I wasn't even aware of that. Likely because I was far more into what was happening over across the pond during that time.
Bruno used some diner lingo that I recognized: * Adam and Eve on a Raft - Two poached eggs on toast. * Cackle fruit - Eggs * Run it through the Garden - Add all the condiments. I can't identify the other diner lingo he mentioned.
Sorry i am double dipping, But the funniest line in the show is when James Ingram comes out of the cooler and Eugene Levy said to him,,If you think it was cold in that cooler, wait till you get on Stage. Too Funny.Love it.
Why yes, signing the guest book at the 3D house of beef is the main reason I came here Dr. Tongue...I always look forward to it. I really miss John. Love SCTV, thanks for the upload. Classic, Catherine O'Hare with a mustache LOL
It's hard to believe they made such memorable characters and bits on such a low budget. That's what happens when you get a bunch of legends together and let them do their thing.
I hate to admit it but I was in my 40s when I put together that Count Floyd was actually Floyd Robertson of the news program. 🤦🏻♂️ This (‘Dr. Tongue’s 3D House of…’) is one of the best bits of the entire series, especially coupled with Monster Chiller Horror Theatre.
@charles Middleton SCTV came on during the 80s and 90s and was based in Canada. It developed a cult following here in the U.S., and was set around a fictional tv network. Much like SNL, virtually all of the players went on to successful careers in both film and series tv. In fact, SCTV in most areas was shown after SNL, so popular that at one point, SCTV beat SNL in the ratings, as SCTV managed to keep stuff fresh, and the cast was genuinely funny, so no one person carried the show.
SCTV Trivia: Count Floyd is of course news anchor Floyd Robertson. He and his sidekick Earl Camembert are parodies of real-life Canadian news readers Lloyd Robertson and Earl Cameron
In Chicoutimi, SCTV test marketed the stereo version of 'House of Real Cheetos' with Orson Welles, Luciano Pavarotti and Johnny LaRue as co-anchors and Edna Boil as an on stage budgie girl chanteuse....
@A Free Zaphorogian Cossack...I LOVED James Ingrams 'Just Once'. You can still see his complete performance on the DVD...SCTV vol. 2....Disc 3 (episode 93 - The Godfather segment)...I just watched it!!❤
I was watching another UA-cam channel where a pair of twin comedians went to Arby's to try a venison sandwich, and one of them said "Arby's is the house of protein", and THAT made me think of THIS, the 3D House of Beef!😂
Wasn't there an episode in SCTV where John Candy offered some type of "Smell'o'vision" where they had some type of canister that would let you smell what was going on in the scene? I was so young when I saw some of these, I don't remember much!
Wondering what the writers were eating, drinking, and - most of all - smoking as they came up with this classic. Whatever it was, I'll have whatever they were having!
I so want to attend this fall's Monster Bash/Monster Con in Pittsburgh (not West Mifflin, heh-heh) to see Joe Flaherty (Count Floyd) in person. We shall see...
I loved me some SCTV and lived to see Count Floyd. But let's face it Monster Chiller Horror Theater wouldn't be what it was if it didn't have Bruno. He was their Charlie Watts.
The most remarkable thing about this, watching it so many decades later, is the pacing and length of the bits. They weren't afraid of taking their time and letting a joke build.
People could pay attention back then also
Such a great show.
Dave R This was the heyday of comedy In my opinion 😎
And don't forget Harold Ramis as well
Saturday Night Live skits felt stale and dated in comparison to the creativity you saw on SCTV. When Kids in the Hall cam onboard it was clear there is something in the water producing stellar Canadian talent.
Shut up, hoser.
And the year Candy and O Hara left the show they had robin Duke and Tony Rosato who were about as good
RIP John and now Joe. What joy they brought us. I actually really wanted to go to the “real” 3-D House of Beef. 🥩
The 3D effects were stunning for their time.
what's funny is Candy handing out 3-D glasses for a live show! LOL. I loved this show when it originally aired in the 80's!
john browne 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rest in Peace and Love Joe Flatley!
You and the entire SCTV rocked my world back in the day and still do crack me up!
Count Floyd thanks for all the Laughs!
❤🎉😂🤣😂🙏🏻
the "3D effects" joke never got old
"Would you care to sign our guest book?" LOL!!!!
the 3-d sound is still my ringtone!
I was just about to say that! 🙂
It perfectly captures the way Castle movies (and others) would employ these novelties, offered with the promise of enhancing the movie-going experience, in the lamest possible way.
We do them at home all the time! 😆
30 years pass, and it's just as brilliantly funny as ever.. no one does character comedy like SCTV did.

HA HA Bruno: "Listen Tongue don't start barking orders at me"
Tongue: "He's somewhat of a moron"
The most outstanding of skits. The brilliance stands the test of time. Still crack up when Count Floyd howls like a werewolf.
Eugene Levy, best eyebrow work in the business.
SCTV was my Friday night in the mid 80s!
SCTV brought a new era of comedy; instead of memorizing simple one liners, comedians now created full characters and personalities for their act.

John Candy kills with that Vincent Price voice!
I thought John Candy was doing Truman Capote.

I get more of a Truman Capote vibe.
Think that’s Truman Capote.
Definitely Vincent Price! He was the "Master of Horror"...back in the day. Price's voice is also on the Michael Jackson.' THRILLER" video & song.
So glad I have my 3D glasses. This movie just wouldn't be the same without them.
Yeah, even the $29.95 in 1983 dollars seemed like a real bargain!
"3D entertainment and an excellent cut of beef." I don't know about you guys, but I'm sold!
Wow...I remember the 3-D House of Beef. SCTV was a terrific show. Yet, SCTV is no longer on the air and SNL is still on. Not fair.

That menu scared the hell out of me. I still have nightmares.
A hearse bringing the " beef". I'll go vegetarian at that place.
Count Floyd--"what are you doing with that beef?" kills me every time
A vampire who howls like a werewolf! I love it!
Love this show. Count Floyd's Monster Chiller Horror Theatre. I liked the 3D House of Slave Chicks and the "Smell-O-Rama"
In the 90's, there was a sludge metal band from Seattle called 3D House of Beef.
I love that they got their name from an SCTV sketch.
Wow, as a native Western Washingtonian, I can't believe I wasn't even aware of that. Likely because I was far more into what was happening over across the pond during that time.

The talent is beyond amazing. I so miss this show all these years later
The 3D effects are amazing.
I love SCTV.

A friend of mine turned me onto this sketch about 10 years ago & I have loved it ever since!!!!

The pinnacle of 3D entertainment... 😆

John Candy was the best. Really miss that guy.
I watched sctv & the flintstones for an hour when i was home from school @ lunchtime. It was badass.
It's hard to believe they made such memorable characters and bits on such a low budget. That's what happens when you get a bunch of legends together and let them do their thing.
I remember Count Floyd! Always liked that character
The characters on this show...genius.
"Damn it's cold in there with that Sausage meat!"--James Ingram
Dr. Tongue cracking up, I love it! He's TOTALLY in character, as usual.
“Wait a minute, that is the meat delivery truck.”
There were great "local" comedy shows back then. SCTV in Chicago and a local comedian in Seattle had a sitcom too, his name escapes me
I hate to admit it but I was in my 40s when I put together that Count Floyd was actually Floyd Robertson of the news program. 🤦🏻♂️
This (‘Dr. Tongue’s 3D House of…’) is one of the best bits of the entire series, especially coupled with Monster Chiller Horror Theatre.
True pioneers of 3D TV.
Who dreamed this stuff up?This must have been released in the 1980's.
@charles Middleton

PLEASE PUT UP PART TWO OF 3D HOUSE OF BEEF!
I was laughing before the clip even started, just at the title of it.
That's DOCTOR Tongue to you sir. I didn't go through 12 years of medical school to be called Mister Tongue!
In Chicoutimi, SCTV test marketed the stereo version of 'House of Real Cheetos' with Orson Welles, Luciano Pavarotti and Johnny LaRue as co-anchors and Edna Boil as an on stage budgie girl chanteuse....
*Orsan* Welles. Just make sure not to confuse him with "Orsan Buggy". 😂
The content is timeless, and from my memory before it's contemporaries' time
RIP Joe Flaherty 😢
When I was a kid this movie scared the shit out of me. I slept with my lamp on for a week.
The meat delivery truck line is incredible! haha

LOVE Dr. Tongue and Bruno

Wow... The 3d in this is better than anything... Better than avatar!
Great!!! Loved that show...
"Just Once" made no. 17 in the summer of 1981.

LOL. "The Polyesters." I'm surprised it's not against the law in Canada to poke even gentle fun at The Nylons like that.
I was wondering if anyone else nowadays realized that they were parodying The Nylons!
Can you imagine the laughs having these guys over for dinner???
SNL was great in the late 70s/early 80's....SCTV was better!!!!!
