Healing the Negative Father Complex

  • The archetype of the father is associated with gods, kingship, and other images of authority and order. As the image of a “personified affect” fueled by an archetypal core, the father complex is powerful. In its negative aspect it may arise from a father who was experienced as absent, emotionally unavailable, passive, critical or abusive. Jung’s father complex influenced his adult relationship with Freud, to whom he wrote, "Let me enjoy your friendship not as that of equals but as that of father and son." Although the eventual break with Freud caused Jung years of inner turmoil, he later realized that they were also the deep source of all his subsequent work. Similarly, Charlotte Bronte and her sisters were able to use their father wounds for their literary creativity. Although healing the father complex can be difficult, taking on this inner task can provide energy for living more fully, freely, and individually.
    HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZED:
"I woke up in a large, 3 story wooden house that was inhabited by 3 or 4 other people. One was a film director who was coaching a rather unwilling, melancholy actress. I explored the different areas of the home and came to the conclusion that this building was too old, and was being deconstructed for something new. The floorboards creaked, and the walls were peeling off the way tree bark does. After coming downstairs, back to the first floor, and walking down the main hallway, a knock sounded at the front door. First, I looked through the peephole. A grungy looking middle-aged man with short, grey hair and a week old beard stood, impatiently waiting. I opened the door, and he abrasively brushed past me, he was wearing a long, worn, dark gingerbread colored raincoat. At this moment, the importance of the decaying house vanished behind me, along with the strange director and actress. I was led down a short set of stairs to a jungle sized backyard wet with snow. I stood alone now, gazing at the canopies. In the distance, something caught his eye. An animal, alone amidst the fog & snow. A black panther stood, staring at me. I was afraid, and buried myself in the snow as the black panther came running full speed towards me. As this situation began to fade, I woke up in a hospital where I was being shown that his hip had been injured."

I needed to heal from negative mother and father complexes. I was so unkind to myself and I had no self-belief, no assertiveness to fuel any ambition. Just feeling inadequate and berating myself for that.

I am doing inner child healing, soul work and a big admirer of Jung, archetype and healthy self/ family. Self autonomy.
I was adopted by grandfather and got reconnected to my real father. Sad thing is, although he's alive, he's still missing in my life.
I found this video by syncronicity, because the pain of not having a father is very empty and confusing. I want to know "healthy father" so I can at least try to incorporate some of that for needed healing. Healthy model.
I am a new subscriber to your channel. I'm surprised there aren't more LOVES and likes to your channel.
PLEASE please, keep this going. Those of us with parental wounds, needs you, needs something SAFE we can turn to and TRUST.
I am reading * The Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene* and it goes well with Jung studies.
WARNING: It's a hard book to put down. 😁

QUESTION. in fairy tales the blame is always placed on the wicked stepmother for her treatment of the children. Why does the father gets a pass? He is actually the one breaking his covenant with his children, while the stepmother never had a covenant with the children. In my mind the father is most to blame for not protecting his children, yet culturally this "oversight" of male responsibilities continues to get a pass

Maybe mainstream sitcom's passive and foolhardy father's is as close as the collective has gotten? Maybe this is part of the fight against "The Patriarchy", the "white man", this anger at failing to care for "us"?

What the hell are you even talking about? In how many stories are fathers getting a ''pass'' for re-marrying and allowing their children to be abused? In case you don't remember, Cinderella's father actually dies, which is why he can't protect her. And Snow White's father wouldn't have even been aware of the queen's actions. So that leaves what? Hansel and Gretel? Whose father abandoned them because his wife manipulated him while they were on the verge of starving? Yeah, that guys not winning father of the year, but how many cases even like that are there? I mean, look, just because your father sucked, that doesn't mean women are the eternal victims of men, exclusively. Women can be evil too, okay?

Hi, I'm here to say thank you guys and sending love 🙌💜. I listened to this episode on January and it helped me integrate the trauma caused by my father both physically and emotionally. This episode put me on the right path that led me to dream work, body work, writing and analysing my trauma in a safe way. My father in my dreams is a helpful protective figure and is by my side always and i have you to thank for that🌹.
    Keep up the good work.

The puer or peter pan syndrome is seen in people who refuse to grow up. They demonstrate and adolescent emotional quality; some refuse to go get a job after graduation from college.
An absent father or hero father is difficult to talk or connect with.

Identification w the aggressor has been seen in narcissistic relations. The made up go the opposite way (a correction and want to be opposite of the narcissistic controlling father). Those women w a negative father complex will search for a romantic partner who is protective , they will see the world as a place where ones needs cannot be met. A persecutory perspective will be seen.

Very interesting as a psychotherapist. Tbe absent or hypercritical father causes one to seek out a father figure who might be accepting.
The only thing I would caution is fairy tales and narcissistic relations w magical thinking. (Reality testing, judgment all ego functions). We want the ego to integrate+ and - introjects and thus not resort to splitting.

Thank you very much for these 'Jungian Life' talks guys, while as a therapist myself and an in large part Jungian fellow traveller, they have helped clarify my own thinking as it relates to the topics that you have discussed in each of your excellent episodes. As for the dream analysis in this edition, there may perhaps be some slight commonality here with the great narration, "Der Manne Sippe" that the character Sieglinde provides in Act 1 of Wagner's opera, 'Die Walkure' - a scene in which she describes Wotan (your grungy and gingerbread colored coat wearing middle age man) being present at her wedding to Hunding - while it is also suggests some aspects of Wagner's 'Parsifal' (i.e. the Fisher King archetype)...Anyway, and as any grounded and good dream analysis would confirm, the themes and motifs which are contained within dreams are, in the end, all archetypally interrelated.

This is so important! Coming from an orthodox religious community, this was spot on. These dynamics are way more exaggerated here. The over bearing father figure is unexcapable. And the response in people is predictable, between those two dynamics.

Damn! I was "brainwashing" myself with an audio book of Answer to Job, I downloaded it to my UA-cam premium account, and listened to on repeat for over a week. Yesterday, I started to listened to it at 1.25 faster speed my whole work day; 5am-3pm. Today, I woke up on my day off and found it has been erased from UA-cam completely. They even took it outta my downloads. Hmmm... I hate reading now cuz I get too into it, absorb too much outta it, and think beyond the edge of the ledge of the knowable. However, I am NOW gonna have to read this damn book. My plan was to imbibe it a month. It is the last key to unlocking my Dark Jungian final analysis and unleashing raw Shadow onto society... beyond commercial interests, marketing schemes, academic credibility.... is .... we shall see. I know why you guys can't delve this deep, who would be your customers if you put as much time into this piece as much as advertising?

I would avoid any euphimisms about the chinoo giving the others the key to vring him down to size, its too similar to parental rescue fantasy which only further destroys a childs life. If you have an abusive harmful parent you will have to consider leaving.

When the ego identifies with the child complex it’s so painful she’ll abuse people the way her father did to her because she’s possessed by that complex. We become our own perpetrator. The boy can actually co-opt and merge with the father complex. It’s less permitted to become conscious in the woman. Like the boy will not merge the negative Mother complex The girl will not merge the negative father complex.

They spoke of "Iron John", by Robert Bly (Interview with Bill Moyer on YT). I found it a fascinating read and fairy tale (Grimms Brothers). Did it help me to heal my Father Wounds? Not a clue, but it surely resonated. I'm glad to see the question, as I haven't read it in some time, and this was perhaps Synchronistic?!
Also, James Hollis a Jungian Analyst and author who has been involved in The Minnesota Men's Conference (A channel on YT which features many videos which you might find helpful/interesting), comes to mind , might have books of interest. Robert Lee, has his own website (also found on Minnesota Men's Conference) is a therapist and author working with men. Hope this is useful.
