Great video. I always wondered what Jung meant by the "Self". He described it in abstract terms and his language is often confusing. While primal repression is still in place (repressed instincts, feelings, complexes, emotions, shadow, etc) the ego rests on top of the unconscious and the Self seems like an abstract "other" when it is in reality your own evolving Soul (the Divine Flame in the center of the heart, personal individuating, reincarnating Soul) and your Spirit (universal, objective, "the circumference" connected directly to the Divine, Nature, and all others). During awakening or "Individuation" the unconscious de-represses. As the layers of the onion are peeled back and released through relentless purgation, the shadow content of the unconscious is released and integrated. The ego gets closer and closer to the Center. At this point, the Self is not a Jungian abstraction but is a Spiritual Reality. The Self is felt and experienced as a Divine reality at this level and literally fills the Soul with Light and healing bliss. It takes decades to integrate one's ego with one's Self. The Self is Divine. What is revealed is that we are in fact Spiritual beings having a temporary human experience in a world of opposites which forces us to make choices that impact our own growth and the growth of everyone else. G-d does not create souls ex nihilo. As Souls, we co-create ourselves. The Self is the Ground of Being and is Dynamic. The opposites and all the suffering are created when we split off from our mothers to develop our egos and make our way in life. We are "socialized" and our instincts and emotions are not welcome in public. We learn to self reject at an early age. This creates shadow and deepens the split. We are both human and Divine and the goal is to integrate the 2. This is the coniunctio, which is none other than spiritual awakening and integration. As Jung pointed out in great depth, this integration of the opposites is depicted in all of the world's religions and myths. We must love and accept our darkest repressed instincts and our higher Spiritual nature simultaneously. We then become like Christ...perfectly human and perfectly Divine. Peace! Thanks....sorry for posting a book!

It's easier to feel the need to connect with the self when one realizes that our mother did not bond with her baby when the infant was not the expected or desired sex. Then that reconnecting becomes all important.
Jungian Scholar Edward Edinger created important insight that will help many, based on my personal experience. Thank you for this specific podcast. ❤

Happy 14th! Much love to you all. This is one of my favorite discoveries. As a bonus, here is one of my personal favorites. The order of light and sound together moving up and down the infinite frequencies from and to our selves.

There sounds like this huge element of purpose that is simultaneously aligned with or even inspired by the divine which defines the Self.

For me, her going back over the course in the dream may have reflected how she and her partner are going over the course of getting pregnant, and somehow the pram-being a carriage-represents the two possible outcomes of that pregnancy: a baby looking forward or a baby looking backward, or “miscarriage”.

This was a great talk , I would like to share a dream I had in my own work while in training under LG.Corey ,
“ I am in a kitchen at the back door near the kitchen is a security door and behind the security door is a wild women very primitive and enraged , ( Darker Aspect of the Anima ) - In waking life this woman had sent two of her crazy boyfriends to shoot at our house , one of the shootings resulting in one of my friends being shot ) she was banging and crashing at the door trying to get in the room , I took hold of a vacuum cleaner pipe and pointed it towards the door until it was touching the door and a ball of light like a spark came up the pipe and into me ) I dream was followed the next day and was escorted by a dark haired woman , familiar to me she was around in my early work , she handed me over to a fair blonde woman who was quite nurturing and took me in . I have been in healing process for trauma

As a long-time student of Eastern thought (Buddhism, Hinduism, and Yoga philosophy) I am frustrated that there appears to be no awareness among the discussants of this body of work, going back a few thousand years, expressed through Patanjali and yoga sutras, Advaita Vedanta and Kashmir Shaivism, to name the sources I have been exposed to. With my understanding of these sources I would invite an exploration into nondual thought. There are accessible teachers available.

I think your points are well taken. The book over-focused on the provocative rare failures of some teachers and did not honor the deep and valuable work that has been done and continues to happen. That said, Connie did limit her thesis and was championing a few focused issues that are important to her. I am reasonably acquainted with the Eastern paths, and perhaps we can bring forward those valuable contributions in a future episode. ~ Joseph

I dont understand this part of the self maybe being dark, i thought the self represented the God part in you.

I appreciated the inclusion of that possibility, because I have taken my Self's path and it took me to dark places from a social perspective, but it brought me wholeness and deep spiritual insight. Very few people are willing to sacrifice to that degree as they generally pursue comfort and strategy.
