Love this. You could also designate an empty spot in front to contain colors used during this project, to keep them separate until the project is complete.
I love the pencil stand you made!! So clever. To make your pencils stand upright, add a 1-2”layer of pinto beans, lentils or rice, etc… to the base of each box. Choose a bean or rice depending on the size of the slat opening on your boxes. Rice and lentils may fall through the little gap on the sides, but pinto beans will not. This will make your pencils stand up straight. I use rice in the bottom of large recycled glass candle jars to hold all of my paintbrushes. I love how they stand up straight without leaning on the other brushes. Rice also has the added benefit of helping dry out the brush handles after my painting sessions (since rice absorbs moisture). Pinto beans for pencils would work well I think. Just a thought.
@@KimberleyB Definitely worth a try! I don’t see why it wouldn’t if you have some. Could try those glass decorative marbles sold at craft stores for floral arrangements. In fact, I have a bag of clear ones I haven’t used yet. Good suggestion Kimberley!!
When you picked up those boxes with the 2 x 4, dropped them, and laughed, I thought, “Gosh, I love you.” LOL Keep on being yourself…love it. And then there was the clothespin on your shirt…
Yeah! A practical and inexpensive solution to a storage problem. You nailed it! But I do have a request ~ please paint it a happy, bright color and make it even prettier!
WOW, I love this! I will never own 500+ colored pencils, but I can see me using 3 of those boxes and doing a mini version of this stand. I'd probably also divide each box into three sections as opposed to two. This is such a totally customizable stand., and I will be working on making my own version of this. TFS your wonderful creativity.
I like the jar idea inside the slots. That way if you just wanted to pull out browns and grays, you could pull the jars and leave the rest where you usually store them. By the way, I’m glad to hear that it holds your entire set of 520 Brutfuner pencils AND gives you room for more. You know, in case you need even more than 520 colors!🙄
Or if you have a work in progress and you want to keep your colors that you are using separate, putting them in a jar and putting the jar in the back of one of those boxes would be good.
That is a great idea! For those of us who do not have 500 pencils I think the square box drawers they have at the dollar tree with the cutouts in the drawer part will work as well for a smaller version. Just remove the drawer and use the base. You are always coming up with great storage ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Great project! To save money on a 2x4 check out the back of Home Depot. They usually have some pieces of wood that are slightly damaged. They will even cut it to size for you. I got a 2x4 for a couple of dollars last year.
what a superb idea! Way to go ! I could see a version of this for my 'stuff in bottles', e.g. glues, Nuvo 'stuff', maybe small jars of whatever all that paste stuff is I've collected, etc., LOL. Actually, I just need a countertop all the way around my craft room and several of these to hold all the groupings of stuff I have HAHAHA...Oh Lindsay you have given me some very visual ideas!
Foam board used for presentations are cheap and sturdy to use as dividers, and those of us with kids might have some already. When I get some desk space I'm going to be all over this! Great idea, thanks for the video 😀. Woot woot for hump day, it's almost the weekend.
Best project ever! I'm staying with a friend while I get ready for surgery, but the minute I get my own place again, I'm going to use this idea and customize for my new space!
Seeing this makes me know what I’m going to do with my tea tins. I always order the same loose tea by the dozen and work through that quantity about twice per year. I hate getting rid of them so this is a great use.
Hi Lindsay.....great idea! Your way to display all those pencils really makes them easier to see and use. Thanks for always bringing a smile . Loving all your paintings on Instagram. They are awesome!
I'm very, very disappointed you didn't start juggling the boxes. Haha! That clothespin idea is great! Pretty nifty idea. I made makeshift shelves from Arm and Hammer kitty litter boxes and glued them into cubes using the 2 glue method. It really works well. WWMM is another favorite channel of mine, too. This is a really nice project and I'm surprised at how sturdy it is. The pencils look nice and accessible, too. Thanks to you and Mr. Frugal for this idea.
Oh my gosh, you have no idea how much I needed this video. I have been searching for the perfect pencil holder / container and spending money on things that have been not-quite-right. This will be fantastic. Doing a happy dance in Coastal Oregon. 💃
I'm currently working on a similar version made of cardboard and in which I can put away the divisions once I'm done coloring, similar to a pencil case. You have amazing ideas, thank you!
Great idea! I only have a small collection of pencils, but am thinking of other things I can store and be able to see because of the risers! Laughed out loud with the mention of Norm Abram! I think you should wear a plaid shirt for future carpentry videos! 🤣👍💕 Janet
This looks super cute! Not for me for storage personally (I prefer the wood pastel drawers) but I can see this being a lovely way to keep pencils you have out organised when you're working on a piece.
"Storing colored pencils,a great idea, artists also stores masterpieces deep within the mind."-Lynn This I awesome Lindsay, what a great way to store them.👍♥️🙂🌹🥂
Thanks for the encouragement to DIY this. I’ve seen pencil sorters/holders on art supplies stores that are weirdly expensive, and this is so much more practical. (And I love your necklace too!)
Lyndsay this is awesome! I have been keeping my eye out for interesting storage ideas ever since I saw your spice rack pencil holder. We were up to Moosehead last weekend and I was checking out the shop full of second hand items, no pencil holder items jumped out, but it is so much fun to see how you can repurpose different things!
Hello Lindsay! Love this project! It turned out really well and is really a useful storage unit for all those beautiful pencils. I am dying to hear about how the kit of 520 (!) colored pencils work out for you as I'm interested in getting them. I saw where the package said they were "oily" colored pencils so am wondering how they color blend using Gamsol - I imagine they'd blend very well. Would love to see a full video review on these pencils and blending them with Gamsol or equivalent! P.S. I'm sure I'm not the first person to tell you this, but you look a lot like Gillian Anderson!
Thanks! I loved x files! Actually the pencils blend great with a little water. I'm dtill putting them through my tests but I hope to have the review up next week because there is so much interest about them (and a fair bit of speculation and misinformation.)
Basically it's a good idea, and you seemed pretty happy with it, so congrats on your pencil container. :) I know you are called the frugal crafter, and that is why you probably picked up these boxes, but unfortunately the pencils do not stand up straight, and that's probably because the boxes are too shallow for these pencils. The pencils lean over and will probably tip out of the containers quite easily. So, being a bit of a woodworker myself, I thought about the quickest way to fix this, if it should bother you in the long run, (and also, if you can still get the dividers out,) you could make the dividers 1" or 1"5 or even 2 inches higher ( test it out beforehand) than the boxes and glue more dividers, same hight, at the back of each division. I feel silly giving advice to the Frugal Crafter ;) but I imagine you might get fed up, if your nice new pencils keep tumbling out, so at the risk of getting blasted by your admirers, (btw I like you, too) I post this anyway.
No one will blast helpful hints. I can put cups in there it it bothers me or add extra corner to corner dividers. I want them shallow because when they get used I can't see them peeking out if cups or taller sized storage 😆
That's not only a great idea, but it looked really good too! I hate going to any store (was like that before pandemic), but you've got me REALLY wanting to go to Dollar (or similar) stores for wonderful, inexpensive, creative storage items. I seem to be amassing quite a collection of watercolor brushes now, so something like this would be great to store them, once dry. :)
What a great idea. You are soooooo crafty. I loved the clothespin too. When my new studio space is ready - I might just try something like this for some of my supplies. Thank you for sharing.
Colour coordination makes my eyes so happy. 😍 Although seing colour coordinated book shelves that abandon alphabetical order throw me into existential crisis! 🤣😂
I just discovered something interesting about these pencils, for some reason, they are great on Drafting Film. I was playing with Polychromos on the film and it's very limited as far as layering. I tried the Brutfuner on top and got a few more layers! This is fun because they are thin you can get details.
WOW! Fantastic pencil holder/sorter, Lindsay! It really looks fantastic! Thank you for the measurements with us, too. I don't have that many pencils, but, I could scale it down. Tfs.
I’m jealous of your wide selection of colored pencils! I want them all, every color and a spare of every color. I have become a colored pencil addict! 😅
Love your pencil holder! I have not been to any stores since the Pandemic hit except the grocery store once a month, but I think I need to go to Dollar Tree now. Did do way too much online buying during the past year, but time for a Dollar Tree visit.
Its awesome! So much organized space. You could also use walpaper, colorful sticky vinyl or glossy paint to decorate it. Problem solver Lindsay to the rescue, lol. I had to take a second look at the date on this video, I dont think i have seen you use this room in quite a while.....
Love it! Quite the woodcrafter, Miss Lindsay! Think I might try it on a smaller scale. I bought this triple layer case for my pencils and hate it. There's 20 bucks wasted. Your plan is much better.
The clothes pin totally reminds me of trying on my wedding dress. I am either a size zero or a size 2 and of course the samples were all 8 or 10 so when I tried them on they were clothes pinning everywhere and telling me well just imagine how it would look. Needless to say it was difficult to imagine :).
To fix your blouse…sew a black decorative thinner rope to either side of your top at waist height, at the side seams, then you can tie it in the back for a cute accent. Love your pencil holder!
Enjoyed the change of pace. The first video of yours I watched years ago was making some beautiful beads. I'm surprised you haven't taken your blouse to the sewing machine and made a couple of flattering seams down the sides. Wouldn't have to take much out at all.
@@thefrugalcrafter you certainly could or you could just make an inward curve down the sides and not touch the width of the armhole or hem. I've done it right down the middle of the back too depending on how I felt at the moment.
