Hi Matt, Lovely piece of Art. Very good job done. I suppose you are planning your exhibition soon. Cheers, Amit
Cheers for watching.
That wax finish looks perfect! Whale (and all cetaceans) tails are horizontal like yours, and fish tails are vertical. That hard wood is real good for fine details also. 🐳👍😀
That's cool I got the tail right. Yeah the finish worked out awesome. Cheers for watching 👍
No blubbering over that whale of a carving Matt, looks fin-tastic, you krilled it !!! Jokes aside, really glad you accepted the challenge, looks really cool !!!
Cheers, Criss. I think you used up all of your whale puns now. 😆🐋
Elm! I never would have guessed that. I actually love Elm, it can have amazing grain, and if you sand it up and give it a polish, you get to use a special word. Chatoyance! Carving it with blades is tedious, but with Dremel it's much easier to deal with interlocking grain. You didn't mention that Elm smells like poop when you sand it. Cheers!
Edit: I should have waited till the end to finish writing this, you did polish it up.
Cheers, William. Yeah elm would be tough with blades. Was glad to get rid of the bulk with the bandsaw. 👍
It came out beautifully Matt! Those coloured waxes are a good tip, i'll have to keep my eye out for them.
Cheers Claire 👍
Of course yours is amazing! As always, beautiful piece ! ❤
👍cheers for watching
Thanks Matt. Beautiful little whale. Looking forward to seeing your spirit. I am also doing something. It may end up as an abstract. Who knows. Monthly coffees on the way.
Good to hear your taking on the carving challenge too. Cheers for the coffees ☕️ 👍
Great video indeed Matt. I'm learning a few things for every one of your videos that I watch, so thanks.
Have you seen Sylvain Gautier's video where he makes a whale automaton? It's awesome too.
Yes I have, seen that whale. I'm pretty keen to make one of those. Cheers for watching 👍
How beautiful. I love it Matt
Thanks so much!
Whale tails go up and down, fish tails go from side to side.
Cheers, 👍
Uh oh! thanks Jim.
Love the whale!! And the use of the elm and the wax!!!
Yeah elm is a beautiful wood. Cheers
Awesome whale Matt 👍👍👍, I can't wait to see part 2!
Cheers Mark. You probably got a good chance of winning it as you are in nz.
@@MattCarves ive got alot on my plate at the moment so I won't be entering.
Excellent whale Matt...
The Elm is beautiful..great choice...
Though I'm not a resin expert.. I believe while the mix is still drying you can use an alcohol dampened Q-tip.. I think you might call it an ear-bud..to dilute and remove the uncured resin from around the mend... hopefully this is helpful..😁...
Again.. beautiful carve...thank you...🌿🌿🌿
Thank you Pamela. Will give the alcohol cotton bud a go. Cheers 🍻
Cool Matt, my whale is coming along too. But I’ve combined both whale and spirit (fisherman) in one carving. Not sure it was the smartest idea. Lol. Thanks for the video.
That sounds like a great idea to me. Happy Carving 👍
Very, very 😎
✌🤩✌
Have a whale and calf carving I did but I can't post it in comments
I've carved a whale and used TiteBond instead of epoxy for the fins. I think it's more than strong enough and doesn't present the cleanup problems of epoxy. I really like your use of elm - not sure where to get that in the U.S. Great carving!
Titebond will have a look for that. Cheers.
How big is the whale? What size wood did you start with?
Its quite small. about 5.5 inches long. the piece i started with was approx 6x 2x3.5
How do you start? Do you find and use a picture as reference or do you just start a sketch?
Hi Dennis, I used reference photos that I found on google for this one. I dont show them on the video as they are copyrighted. Its good to get a couple of angles. Some of my other carvings I will do my own sketches or just go freestyle for woodspirits.
Cheers for watching
Great video Matt lots of great tips and tricks appreciated stay awesome bud just carve
Thanks 👍
