  • Southern Pacific on the coast this day, was the place to be with a video camera. Starting here at Seacliff, chasing down the old Pacific Coast Highway for a few miles was a common past time I took advantage of when ever possible. I believe the engineer had an itchy trigger finger for the P3 that day.....luckily.
My brother took us up in the Cessna Skymaster one day in the same area. You can see why SP on the Coastline was, and still is a favorite.

Ohhhhhhmygaawwwwd at 6:56 a Crown bus too. What a great catch this entire video is. Thank you for sharing the "best of" in this video; best railroad ever, best bus ever.

I just drove this road through Seacliff today this afternoon. And I thought just how wonderful it was to see the Espee when it ran here. I miss the Espee so much, best railroad of my "railroad era", 1978-1996.

Crazy timing discovering this “tube” today. I’m into model railroading and purchasing that very same loco(SD45T-2 #9189) tomorrow!!!! Manufacturer hasn’t made one of these guys in couple years and it’s the only SD45T-2 I’ve located! Still brand new!!

So glad I just found this video. It definitely took me back to my childhood when my dad would take us out train chasing around Sacramento in the late 80s and 90s. Sure miss those faded, grimy, and overworked SP locomotives.

I lived next to SP in Chatsworth and Simi Valley from 1969 to 1985. The last era of real railroading.

The Godfather (Vince Cipolla) was at the throttle. One of the NICEST San Joaquin guys I ever knew. I miss running the Coast, it was a treat, nd it took skill.

Brings back memories of Oxnard. Dave Johnson is the clerk on the radio. I recognize the crew members on the train but can't think of Leonards last name. The autos came out of Warm Springs and the long flats came out of the Army base at Camp Roberts. The perishable came out of Guadalupe and Surf.

Trainmaster Bill Giles tell us to do something and make a pickup...WE make a pickup.I remembered this day. Dave Johnson is at the end of this video talking on the radio to Vinnny Cipolla "THE GODFATHER of the Santa Barbara SUB. Good ole 80's. Railroading was alive and well back then and for real....Long live the memory SP and Oxnard yard and the really cool people that work there.

They were a kick to run too. Leaving LA yard, around Glendale, if you throttled down to run 6 it would send out a shockwave that set off car alarms! It was the only engine you could feel in your chest! I loved them and sure miss ‘em. Glad the 6819 is preserved at the Sacramento Railroad Museum.

It’s rare to see this SP stuff from the early 80s. Most of the time you see the late 80s-early 90s when video became more popular but the early 80s was by far the better time period in my opinion.

This takes me back to some happier times! We (my family) would always camp at El Capitan State Beach in Santa Barbara County, which was track side on this SP Route. Yeah, it was noisy at night, but the day light offered some spectacular back drops to SP's trains! I really wish I had a good camera then, man would have I gotten some good shots! We moved out of CA in 1995 and SP didn't last much longer, sad day when I found out UP bought them out. Some good memories though! I suggest making El Capitan State Beach a vacation/photo destination, the campgrounds are well taken care of and just some awesome seascapes as well!

While that's common knowledge, I thank you for the post. It doesn't change the fact that the 20 cylinder engines had a better sound which I why I have a special fondness for them. I will miss that sound. Standing on a tunnel facing looking down on the tracks while a group of SD45s passes underneath shaking your innards is like nothing else. The 40s pale in comparison.

I grew up in Lancaster,Calif. along the SP's San Joaquin Division in the 50's and 60's. The best sounding air horn in my opinion. SP did wash their engines, all the time. I observed K-M 9014 being washed in the wash track in Bakersfield. It was in later years things started going down hill. Observed engines in LA going through the washer. They use the excuse for these mega-mergers that the trucks are the competition, but it looks like they gave it all to them anyway so they can run only double stacks.

I heard SP never cleaned their locomotives.... this proves it lol. Love the sound of those 16.645 EMDs, the newer 710s have lost a lot of that raw power sound, thank you EPA...not

However, even on my PC, if I copy and paste the URL in the UA-cam search field, it does not come up there either, nor does it come up when I copy and paste the video title. Was this video somehow removed from search engines?
