  • In this video I am showing you my reforestation project on my land out in west TN of a hickory grove. The variety I used is shagbark as well as shellback hickory just to add variety in both appearance and nuts. I hope this video is interesting and inspires other to try and reforest land. Reforestation is my absolute passion and nothing brings me more joy! As always comment any questions, experience or really just anything. I love our green thinking community and hope to see you in the next update video. Think Green!

I have been at growing trees for about 60 years now. The biggest secret to success with trees is when I learned that "leaves are the mother's milk of tree growing." I had one failure after another until I learned this secret of successful tree growing. Think about how trees grow in nature. The oak and hickory for example drop their seed and then drop their leaves on top of the seed. These leaves do many things for the old tree as well as the soon to be new trees. I am convinced that on the microscopic level there are fungi and microbes that rotting or composted leaves put into the soil that the young trees absolutely must have. Also when you put composted leaf mulch in with the tree and around it you not only fertilize the young tree but help it to keep out grass and weeds and keep the young tree moist.
The second "secret of tree growing" that I learned was to take young trees and put them in nursery pots before planting and fill with the soil mixed with composted leaf material and then take the nursery pot with the new tree in it and put this pot into a tub of water and watch it while bubbles come out from the soil. When there are no more bubbles all the air is out and that tree will not die and now you can actually plant that tree even in summer. Just putting your saplings in the ground without this method will always result in some of the young trees dying because of air around the roots which is unavoidable. If you "beginner" tree growers heed an old man's advice you will spare yourself the many years of failed tree growing that I had to experience to learn the secrets of tree growing. I am encouraged to see new generations of tree growers. I admit to having had a lot of problems getting hickory to grow on my site in eastern Michigan.

Hey, Green Thinking, awesome video! I'm working on plan to plant app. 50 shagbark hickories and 30 black walnuts in East Tennessee. Really curious how your hickory project is looking now.
Keep up the great work and videos! Thanks!

Hello Jack I typed my response then it all deleted a couple days ago! Sadly I let this hickory tree grove go and lost all but 3 saplings. Ive learned a lot since this video dropped and number one is, do not plant small saplings in the open if you cannot regularly cut the grass. I couldn't cut the grass frequently at this location and it resulted din me coming out every couple months to 4- 7 foot tall field grass completely engulfing the saplings, me forgetting where they are, running them over with a mower and losing them when my markers fell over and were in the grass.
Wish you the best of results in your endeavor but my advice would be only plant larger saplings like at least 2 feet and up, anything at 4- 5 is absolutely ideal, and make sure you can regularly maintain the saplings whenever you plant them, if not just be aware how fast grass grows in TN. Thanks!

So inspiring, and can't wait to get my own little baby trees growing and then plant them at families garden. (perhaps some in nature where they are cut) We all should plant at least one tree each year. :D

Hi , how far apart did you plant? Do the hickory trees have to planted near others to produce nuts years later?
    Thank you

    Why not use fruit trees?

As much as I love fruit trees, I already have plenty at my property and do not want any more. No tree makes me more happy than a giant hardwood, from oak to hickory and I like to keep that in mind when I plant. I like to think longterm in planting trees and most hardwoods live for hundreds of years while fruit trees are prone to diseases and don't live that long to begin with in the grand scheme of things. appreciate your comment!

@@greenthinking7247 I agree, I have lemon trees, but I also have a spruce tree, and there is something about a hardwood tree that is amazing.
