- The Nice Bridge is the furthest downstream bridge across the Potomac River as it carries US 301 along part of that road's outer bypass around the Greater Washington area. The bridge opened in 1940 and is currently slated to be replaced within the next decade, as it has become increasingly inadequate for handling the amount of long-distance traffic it carries.
Also Includes: Morgantown Generating Station
This video would be even scarier if it showed semi tractor-trailers coming straight at you, which are in fact very common on the bridge. Thankfully the replacement 4-lane bridge is projected to open in early 2023.
They are building it NOW! It is wonderful to see it coming into being.
This bridge makes me glad I take the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on the Capitol Beltway (I-95/495) up in D.C. (Alexandria). When I get my own car, and I start traveling, I'll make sure to never take this bridge. Once in a while, I travel down from NYC.
Wuss
Well if don't mind the traffic, knock yourself out. I used this old bridge for years to bypass 95 north of Fredericksburg and the general conflagration that is the DC beltway.
Nice clip. I've driven this stretch so many times it is almost as familiar as my own neighborhood! Thanks for documenting it.
The Bridge actually doesn’t go North to South from Maryland to Virgina. It goes East to West. Truly a Scary Bridge, Years ago I had to tow a Three Axle empty trailer across in the Winter with some Snow on the ground and moderate winds.
I hated towing my little 17 foot Winnie across it. I'd hate to have something larger but still light.
I live right here. It is truly one of the most miserable bridges in the country.
@Bruce Roberts Narrow is an understatement. The bridge is 22 feet wide, 11 for each lane with no shoulder. It is also 1.7 miles long but the tall part is only in one small section, making it incredibly steep, a 3.75% grade. IIt is a very scary drive, and I've driven on it for 30 years.
@@vapoet I drove on it once round trip. I had no idea it was up ahead. I am afraid of heights and bridges that are high. I prayed and was nauseous the whole way. I think there should be a warning like....("I'd turn back if I were you. -Cowardly Lion, Wizard of Oz).
😄😄😄
I drove this bridge once it was a surprise. It is so steep of an angle. Video cameras never can show how steep something is.
Imagine running out of gas up there on the bridge. You better call a really good friend
😂😂😂
This bridge isn't that long
I went over it at 1:00 a.m one night on family trip wasn't fun. The low part isn't bad it's when start going up it
😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮nope!
"Nice" name.
My parents take this bridge all the time. I drove it for the first time back in 2016. Yeah I don't know why I took that route. I never took it again though. It's miserable. Kinda ghetto. Lol.
This bridge is garbage and MD has the nerve to have a toll plaza for cars traveling south into VA. First and last trip was five years ago.
The 2 lane road with no shoulder and toll is bad enough, but to make matters even worse the bridge is an obvious state of disrepair, the steel structure is visibly rotting away.
My parents took this bridge a lot when I was a kid to try and avoid the traffic of Northern Virginia on the 95. However I fine that the 301 itself is also often congested and prefer to just put up with the 95.
Faite un tunnel a place
That would just cause traffic
