  • On this episode we talk with Neil Hogg about the British Army's Operation BANNER which ran from 1969 - 2007. 300,000 British troops served in Northern Ireland during this period with more than 20,000 deployed at its peak. In the first part of the pod we cover a brief history of the troubles, the effectiveness of the Provisional IRA, how we trained for a 6 month tour and what it was like to conduct operations in Londonderry during the late 1980s.
In the second half Neil discusses in public for the first time an IRA ambush in which the vehicle he was travelling was struck by a roadside IED killing two soldiers Steve Cummins and Miles Amos. He then gives a powerful and moving account of his subsequent battle with PTSD.
On desert island dits Neil's choice of books are Tornado Down by John Nichol and Dirty Work by Glen McNamara. His film pick is The Odd Angry Shot about the Australian SAS in Vietnam.
The team's pick this week is the SAS Survival Handbook by Lofty Wiseman and The Interrogator by Hanns Scharff.

Really interesting piece guys. Thanks very much to the guest for sharing that memory and allowing others a glimpse into the challenges caused by PTSD. Triggers as common as a certain accent or petrol can make navigating everyday life unpredictable, and I hope that you've found some ways to deal with those triggers in the moment without too much distress. I've listened it through about 4 or 5 times now and always focus on a different element. Awesome work.

Several tours. Best was Fermanagh 1982. I was part of COP. Top training at Ballykinler by NIPG. Great memories despite losing people. Worst tour: South Armagh at the Golf towers. Patrolling fine, but Golf life was dull. Enjoyed the Lynx taxis. We had an AAC WO2 Lynx pilot who wore a very realistic witch’s nose. Once we had to buzz a light aircraft without authorisation to fly over the province. The Lynx caught up very quickly and went cockpit to cockpit. Cessna pilot astonished. I remember at Ballykinler a plastic pub, fake Tudor look. Great morale. BBK mortared as we were taking off in a Lynx on patrol. A local company provided us with a wax coat called Happy Farmer. Excellent and free. Loved Banned despite horrible events

Seems so long ago now but important that people don't forget what happened. Thanks for listening and taking time to comment with your experiences.

I was playing rugger when the scrum collapsed.
We had a chap whonwas in traction on the Falls Rd hospital somewhere.
He had virtually a company of infantry in the hospital looking after him.
Dodgy places where the hypocratic oath is involved.

A third of serviceman that served on op banner Northern Ireland suffered with PTSD. That’s the figures. Constant threat 24 hours from the IRA.

That proxy at V2 was a devastating attack. We had V1. Always felt vulnerable there.

Most squaddies join with what is now called ptsd.
    Why do people join up?
    To escape.

Interesting, not a cop out, I hope.
    The infantry stick together.
Us Corps types, we get posted after two years, we meet new people. No history amongst each other.
