- This DIY moonshine project was a lot of fun. Moonshine often requires some filtering at various stages of the process and this charcoal filter is easy to make and allows you to filter about a gallon at a time.
Finishing your home made moonshine is well worth the extra time it takes.

To wash the charcoal more easily you can try filling the bucket with water and charcoal and stirring it up then pour it through the strainer a couple of times then wash it as you did before. To keep the charcoal from floating up when in the filter put the copper mesh in then an inch of clean sand then put the charcoal in and follow with about two inches of sand. The sand will keep the charcoal in place. Just a couple of suggestions that I believe will take care of the problems you had. As for the sand wash it thoroughly and then boil it so it is completely clean and safe before using it.
The problem with the way you have it set up is getting your charcoal out to clean it because after you run a couple of gallons through it the fissures in the charcoal get full of the things you’re filtering out. To clean the charcoal for reuse it needs to be boiled in water for at least three times. George Duncan has a video about it. I built mine like yours but didn’t glue the bottom section together so I can take it apart to get the charcoal out. I do like the copper paint job and the way you built the mount on the wall. What does filtering do for the moonshine , I'm just getting started and trying to learn as much as possible.
Can I use Foam core pvc?
You could add a 90degree elbow to the left or right 3 inch add 3ft elbow up then put on your 4inch to 3 inch on top that would add volume and not height
That's a good idea. I'm going to run it like this for a while and see. I think the volume will be fine. We'll see.
What are the lengths of the two pipes?
Are you expecting mold growth if that sits for a while? What about flies attracted to the alcohol?
Great questions. I would guess that mold will not be a problem, but flies might. If there is a fly problem I will simply make screened cap for it. Thanks for the comment
So at 3:05 you say put a little piece of copper while holding a 18” piece. Break it down for us. How much? Goes in the brass piece and serves what purpose? I am totally green to distilling. Haven’t made a drop yet. Trying to hit the ground running . I have some 400 mesh SS and was thinking after putting the copper in, put the mesh across it. That last reducer can hold it in place. Do the same on top of the charcoal. What’s your thoughts.? Nothing is glued together. They call me Pinky.
Why did you put carbon not in the second pvc
I was at gfs the other day and saw a large bag of hardwood lump coal. Can I use that for filtering?
I'm personally still experimenting with that, so I can't give a definite answer yet.

any updates on if it worked for you? I did my cleaning run Saturday and my sacrificial run is working off. thought about trying the lump hardwood charcoal and felt to run it through since its sacrificed anyway. ButI thought I would check
I'm new to distilling but not fermentation. I realize proper straining of the mash before distilling and removing solids is important. Why would we need to filter moonshine though? If we separate our heads, tails, foreshots etc, won't we lose any flavours or essences that we want after? I see someone wrote if one were to over flavor something after distilling. Maybe a coffee filter would be safer. I learned that Grey goose vodka adds essences after they make their vodka and they use active carbon to filter the spirit. Please educate me on why filtering here is important. Wine making, of course, remove tannins etc.
Filtering is used by many Distiller's to "polish". It can smooth out spirits.
It can also be used to try to salvage an over oaked whiskey.

The upgrade looks great. Im curious if the PVC will break down when exposed to alcohol, even for a relativly short time and impart any taste. I know PVC os safe for potable water, but Ive heard it can break down when exposed to solvents like ethanol. Looking forward to seeing the results! Oh and the copper paint takes it to the next level and makes it look like it belongs!
As far as I'm aware, I shouldn't have any problems with the PVC since I'm not using it as storage. Thanks for the comment.
Yeah, that copper paint just made it fun too. There's something oddly satisfying about spray paint. 🤣
i guess we can slap a piece of pvc in some high proof liquor and leave it for a few days

maybe split the lower pipe in middle and add in a union so you can remove copper mesh or change it when neded
No don't use copper mesh. Use instead cheese cloth. 😊
My filtered end product keeps turning blue how do i get that to stop or clear it back up

@@StillnTheClear yes i had ordered my active carbon from mile high distillers i ran water throw the carbon before putting in filter i was wondering if maybe i should try packing it down or if you might have ran across same issue what did you do btw love the channel
Also when i use just water it comes out clear only when i try shine or sake' it has blue tint just so wierd
@@jessemendoza2410 I have also had some color issues. I'm going to be making a new video about it when I solve the issues. I think I'm having a problem with the copper I put in the bottom. There is probably some oxidation happening. One of the other viewers warned that I may have that issue. You may be having the same issue.

Why not make your own lump charcoal ? Easier to wash clean , plus you get to chose the flavors put into the spirit .
Copper in the filter , wont that create unwanted colors due to copper oxidation ?
That's a good point about the copper. I didn't think about that. I may have to swap it out. I did think about making my own char, but it was easier to buy some for now. Thanks for the comment.
If the copper would add a flavor, I would think it would do so from the condensers made of copper as well. That is why I don't see it being a problem.

Why not flip it? Drip into the charcoal and let it run out the bottom.
