    I remember Eva Peron. In our gross poverty in this most wealthy nation of the world, she gave us hope.

      Hear, hear to that. Military Juntas and aristocrats that were blind to poverty and only cared about their own interests. Eva and Peron himself wanted to free the shackles of the down trodden - and they suceeded.

    When the movie Evita came out, a friend and I saw it. We went in the daytime and there were only a few people there. After the movie ended, we stood up to go. Since there was no more loud music, we could hear crying. It came from an older woman near the exit. I asked her if she was alright and she said she was from Argentina. She was a little girl when the Perons were in power and she remembered their home getting electricity. Her family loved her were devastated when Evita died.

      I took my parents to the movie. Mom cried at the end. She remembered Evita, even though a teen American at the time.
      Evita wasn't perfect, none of us are. But she did more good than harm. Her memory has been tainted by the political opponents of Peron. Look at American politicians these days, they line their pockets and do as little as possible for the people.

      Lupone was so exagerated, overacted, like a pantomime of Eva, such as most of the women who tried to show a false story about Evita. This musical is absolute against the real story of Eva Perón, who arrived in Buenos Aires when she was 15 years old in a train together with her aunt in order to study declamation. Do you think the actress in this video gives the 15 y/o when Evita arrives in Buenos Aires??? Also, Che and Eva never met each other, Eva lived in Buenos Aires and Che in Córdoba, and also Che was an admirer of Perón and Evita and during the cuban revolution, he named his new young soldiers "descamisados" such as Evita named their workers. So as an Argentine person, please, I recommend you to not believe in the false stories and those ones that were written from extreme right side people who like to live in the more expensive neighborhoods of Argentina.

      @@Roberto_Lopez202 Oh, Roberto! Believe me, I've studied the real Eva Peron up and down, backwards and forwards. The stage production was written by two biased Englishmen, I am fully aware, but we're talking about theater vs cinema, here; a totally different conversation. Gypsy Rose Lee and her mother from the musical "Gypsy," Fannie Bryce from "Funny Girl," Annie Oakley from "Annie Get Your Gun" ..... the list is endless but NONE of these storylines are faithful to their true life subjects and only a fool would believe they were. It's called artistic license and as for the exaggerated performances, stage actors and opera singers are trained to be bigger than life. They have to be.

      @@JulianChild Hello Julian, I understand you perfectly since I am an actor, writer and finally I worked as a theater critic and member of the juries that reward actors in my country. But as an actor I never needed a microphone and I never exaggerated my performance, taking into account that my lungs had enough air to be able to speak loudly and make myself heard until the last row of the theater. I am referring to the compositions of Lupone or Page, where they ridicule an authoritarian and disaffected Eva who does not fit with the intentionality of Eva's speeches. Even Lupone smokes a cigarette holder when Eva never smoked, only when she was already deathly ill did she want to prove that she was smoking a cigarette, at least puffing it once. I understand those little things that give a certain different touch to the story as you say, but for the Argentinians it is very aggressive, on the other hand the attitude of Madona who, reading biographies of Evita, realized that the text of the musical did not exactly reflect the In truth, she asked the director to allow her to change certain physical attitudes, just as Elena Roger, my Argentine friend, did, whom I saw playing Evita in London and she was perfect as we Argentinians imagine her to be today. But I understand you perfectly. In our Teatro Colón specialized in operas it is clear that with so many characters the actors have to be seen in more detail and can exaggerate, but it is not common in musicals or comedies or dramas. Keep in mind that we have more than 300 theaters in Buenos Aires and Greater Buenos Aires. All the best!!!!

    I am 61yo, I first saw EVITA during its first run (Loni Ackerman) and I can't believe I'm going to say this. This is my favorite musical, I watch it every chance I get (except for the movie) and I was fortunate to direct it twenty years ago. Never, since 1982, have I ever been satisfied with a single performance but if this comes across my computer screen as wonderfully as it does, I can only imagine electricity I would have felt seeing it live. I don't agree with a few director's choices but it was still excellently directed, while the ensemble choreography EXECUTION could have had a bit more passion, many of the moves were genius and original. The production needed a bit more of a Latin feel to it ... but, Ms. Mayer ... you kept it fresh, your acting rivaled all others I've seen, your voice was powerful and with expert control, richness and depth. I'm so pleased that, after all these years, we have worthy production to view.

      The movie was great!

    • @JulianChild
      @JulianChild 2 місяці тому +2

      @@LouiseGardener I respect your opinion. "The movie was great," to some, was an opinion held by those who had not seen it on stage. Hollywood approached it through a toned-down more realistic angle whereas West End and Broadway was went for the theatric powerful; two stories, different telling. That's my opinion. I watched the movie and, having received vocal training ... don't get me wrong, I have very high regards for Madonna (three concerts, one I flew from Dallas to Toronto to see again), she is an historic showman, but it was obvious to me that her vocal coach was just off camera, provoking her to over-enunciate. That, and they had to lower the notes for some of the songs because she doesn't have the vocal cords for belting and supporting. It just removed a lot of the excitement for me. If you haven't seen it, yet, remember this is only a video of "A New Argentina." It'll help explain where I'm coming from.
      Thank you for replying civilly. I don't respond to those who are looking to argue; not to exchange ideas.
      ONE MORE THING! Madonna's died VERY well. Tore my heart out.

      Not everyone can afford to see the shows aka me growing up and even now I can go to the West End once every few years it costs a fortune so it’s the only option really (movies). I think the movie has many things going for it and it’ll always be one of my favourites. I’m actually in an amateur production of Evita this year and it’s the first time I’ve ever watched a theatrical production of Evita that wasn’t on UA-cam 😂

    • @JulianChild
      @JulianChild 2 місяці тому +1

      @@LouiseGardener Oh, have fun! I directed it about fifteen years ago and it's still the 80yo theater's highest grossing production ever.
      And, OMG, what you said about the cost to see a production on West End and Broadway ... TRUTH! The last show I saw cost me over $600 for two tickets; HELLO DOLLY with Midler. I just can't swing it any more. I understand the costs it takes to produce such shows but I just can't rationalize it when two-and-a half hours in a theater costs more than the life experiences such as a round-trip ticket to Paris or Rome or anyplace else in Europe. I'm single without any kids so at least I have the choice.
      If your local theater ever auditions for MAMMA MIA!, definitely go out for that. It's kinda silly but it was THE most fun I have ever had in any aspect of many stage productions and it was another one I had the privilege to direct.

    Incredible performance top to bottom.
    Magaldi - Incredible voice!!!
    Mistress - Beautiful and emotional rendition of Another Suitcase in Another Hall :D
    Peron - Strong stage presence, a little too casual for my liking, but I'm totally open to different interpretations of characters, so bravo!
    Che - Fantastic all around, but what really caught my attention, and I LOVED was your physical acting and charisma throughout the show!
    Eva - Hard to put into a short description. Controls the stage, powerful presence and voice, and really does capture Eva's essence from start to finish!
    Bravo to the ensemble as well!
    Audience.... what the heck was that? I understand it's a small theatre, but that place should have been roaring. Tisk tisk.
    Last but not least, thank you for the upload! Much appreciated!

    Lovely singing voices! Very good principals. Taken as a whole, though, the performance lacks a bit of energy. This is perhaps mainly due to the lacklustre ensemble, who also don't sing sufficiently in sych to make their words clear enough. It was also a shame not to make a proper stab at the pin-sharp military marching that some productions - even the occasional high school - achieve so well.

    Hate on America all you want ( I do! I really do and I am an American) but I am SO DAMN PROUD of musical theatre (I know Andrew Lloyd Webber is British) but I'm talking about the art form; musical theatre, a play with acting, singing and dancing. Americans created this art form. It has its roots in opera and vaudeville and evolved into musical theatre. Americans did that! So...do NOT say we (Americans) don't have 'culture' hell yeah we do!
    By the way, if you get a chance you should visit Argentina. It is a gorgeous country so much to devour in every way; nature, food, people, history and tango! The people are good. The politics have been a lil bit rocky but the people are good.
    I visited the north of Argentina back in 2003 just when the Argentine peso $ was tanking hard and people warned me "Don't go there! As an American they're going to hate you! You don't speak Spanish you're going to encounter so much hostility (bc of the economic crisis)".
    No. People were so good to me and I traveled solo. I'm even thinking of retiring to Argentina. They've had some rocky times but there is a passion, feeling, strength and I admire that so much.
