I am 100% Ange In - I need to see this play out. That said, if he refuses to adapt even in small areas then it will eventually cost him his job and he can only blame himself if that happens. What do you think? Also what about Rom Bomb in the 6?
What do I think? He has had a free hit this season and is the Media Darling but if we lose four of the last six games (one already) and we continue our bad form into next season, then he will be gone by Christmas. "It's the way we play mate" just won't cut it.
We should opt for a 3-5-2. Three defenderse, five midfielders and two strikers. The pace of Johnson and Werner on the wings with Son and Richy up front
The set piece debacle is such an easy problem to fix in the scheme of things, and one that does need addressing.
I agree, well said ! Ange needs to own up & admit we have serious problems in our zonal areas defence. Put 2 defenders on each side of the goal post with a defender to protect our goal keeper. This area must be addressed, he must adapt, It frustrates most of us Spurs Fans why we cannot sort out these set pieces by the opposition.It’s a growing continuous issue. All it takes is… We need to hire a specialist coach to sort out this aftermath.
With regards to The No6 roll ? Why not give Christian a go in this position. See how he performs after 5-6 games. He’s a vigorous tenacious tackler, a good passer of the ball & scores goals with his feet & head. Football fans… what do you say ?
Ange has been in a winning managerial position for a long time so I do think he knows what he wants in a winning team and people asking him that question are not in his thinking on how he is working to build a winning team all these people are on the here and now not on the long and sustained course

You are spot on Shaun. I'd like to see Romero given a go as our number 6 - as long as he wants to play there. We also desperately need Dragusin in the side for his aerial ability.

It’s got to be the easiest and cheapest fix we can do, so why are we not? Every corner is a penalty, fix it, now!

All we need to do is only have one full back bombing forward, not two. One goes and one stays. Need a more defensive minded CM to offer cover when needed. Not a lot but will Ange tweek his system? I'm not sure. If we never had the start of the season we did, when no one had worked out how to play against us, we would be mid table or lower.
Three across the back…VDV, Romero and Dragusin! Double strikers and Maddison as a number 10…no inverted fullbacks! Romero takes a leaf out of Baressi’s or Cannavaro’s book and closes opponents in front of the other centre half’s…and have some bite and steel in your two central midfielders! It’s ‘evolution’, Postecoglou doesn’t have to ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’ …It’s obvious!
This team hasn't gotten any better since the first ten games of the season apart from the Villa game, we can't even keep a clean sheet but Ange doesn't think there's a problem, that is cause for concern. It's like the team has to keep scoring to make up for the goals conceded, i will wait and see what this club does in the summer and see if there will be any change next season, if we are playing the same way leaking goals at the back with no set piece coach and no plan B then what's the point.
Again Sean, I couldn't agree more with your comments about the ignorance of Ange regarding our current set piece philosophies.
He sees what we see and to leave players unmarked in defensive corner taking situations is unforgivable.
As i have said many times Ange is as bloody minded as Conte but in reverse; And I'd go as far to say that he is fanatical in his approach which when dealing with anyone with that sort of mindset raises a Red Flag. I wish people would stop making excuses for him
Stopping conceding goals is just as important as scoring them. In fact it is more important because you are making your opposition less confident about their ability to hurt you.
Ange would much better serve the club as Director of football, with his assessment of player recruitment etc. if he has this massive blind spot to the obvious, which is costing us so dear.
The tale of The Emperor's New Clothes comes to mind when i think about Ange, and unfortunately it is an experiment that has gaping flaws that need fixing by a different manager who will adapt and try to win games effectively, instead of always starting each game with a 2 goal deficit, which would be even more without VDV.; Not just say that he wants to win every game.
We haven't been able to put in positive performances with only one game a week. God help us if we get into Europe, which I doubt very much, and forget any cup runs. Cant see them happening.
Perhaps Ange wants to be sacked so he can to go to a club like Newcastle who have pots of money and he can take his defensive Australian coach with him.

Ange is maybe trying to cover who’s responsible for the set pieces. The game yesterday actually showed how close we are to the top teams. We just need to cleanup few details. If we get Gimenez (in attendance yesterday) plus some midfield upgrades and somebody that in the coaching team that understands how to setup for set pieces we could be right there

He would honestly thrive in that role IMO... Gives us an extra defensive monster in the team, he can nick a goal, great in the ball and we can put on a 3rd CB.
I don't really see a downside other than Romero not being at the back... But that is a pretty massive down side unless we went all out for a mega CB 😂

Not sure he’d want to change position to no 6 permanently or if he has the pace for it. Back 3 allowing Romero to surge forwards would be interesting and a good plan B for us. Udogie & Porro are already more attacking by nature so won’t change their game if move into wing back roles.

Just to say Congrats to a Certain Harry Winks. Written off two years ago he has played a full season without injuries in the Championship and turned in a MOM performance at preston as Leicester win the Div. He was worth the £10m for a bang average player.
All very interesting. I think we need to keep faith with Ange. We have made huge progress. Some bumps on the road yes but generally big improvements. Ange can’t fix everything in one go
Spot on Sean Ange has to deal with the defensive issues and see what everyone else is seeing but the players have to take responsibility as well either things have to improve, stubournes will end up hurting him any good manager has to be able to solve poor parts of a teams play if/until he gets better players in.
It's not just set pieces. Fanbois need to wake up, we're wide open to counters from open play 2. 7 goals in 2 games and 3 of them were long balls on the counter.
That's stupid tactics having the whole team in the opposition half playing them all onside as a result.

Let's be realistic, we need 12 players brought in ideally. 2 left attacking, 1 striker, 2 right attacking, 2 central attacking midfielders, 2 defensive midfielders, 1 left back, 1 right back, and if Branthwaite is available see if we could sign him.

Santiago is 1.82 and Toney is 1.85. Not a huge difference. I would rather have young, long term players coming in than someone who is overwhelmingly overrated in the absence of Kane as an English striker in PL.

You are 100% correct about keeping forwards upfield during corners. They won't get in the way of our defenders and their defenders will not like it.

I blame Romero for the 1st goal. He took the free kick, and instead of kicking the ball forward, he kicked it sideways, VDV was immediately under pressure, and a corner ensued. If only if he had flighted the ball forward. Sometimes he dwells on the ball too long, and someone gets a hospital pass, we also lose momentum going forward when he dwells on the ball.
Not happy with the result obviously, but personally i wish Ange had a plan B at times, and was more adaptive when things are'nt working in a match.
Yeah man I agree with your second point, unless he adapts and fixes the clear and obvious problems in set pieces and defence, then we will not get better, we will get served thrashings more and more regularly. How many counterattacking goals have we seen that could have been avoided by positions that our CB fullbacks or number 6 take up?
Good takes there Shaun. He defo needs time to implement a broader philosophy to make the finishing more clinical. Like you say though he's got to be able to adapt and make tweaks or we're going to lose to the same strategy again and again.

The ideal has to be that we get a monster 6 in tandem with Romero and MVD CB’s is by far the best scenario and allow Cuti a libero style role like Ruud Krol of the old Netherlands system, which adds extra layers to our game

Good range of passing, is undribblable, quick, can contribute in terms of goals, I mean he ticks all the boxes
Immediately after a home defeat to our nearest local rivals, and when emotions are still running high for everyone...I wouldn't necessarily trust everything Ange says as being the truth. He may well have been trying to dismiss as untrue, the evidence we all saw with our own eyes. Our defending at set pieces is a real concern to all of us, so I"m sure if we can all see it, then Ange can too. He may just not be able to agree with the truth while the pain and anger is still so raw, but I'm sure secretly, he'll have the boys working their nuts off at improving our defensive stability from set pieces before the our game at Chelsea on Thursday. The reality for any manager , including Ange, is that good results keep you in a job. Too many losses and your job is gone, I'm sure he knows this. So to ignore the glaring deficiency in defending set pieces would be the quick way to a P45.
I agree, set pieces are the biggest problem we have and Ange needs to wake up to it and take responsibility as I think if he doesn't change he will be gone by October, sorry Ange but wake up !!

Our Tottenham Football Club is seriously struggling with defending set pieces. I'm not exactly sure what the main issue is. It could be our zonal marking system, or perhaps our goalkeeper Vicario is not strong enough in dealing with them. It could also be something else entirely. Whatever the problem may be, Ange, our manager, needs to address it as soon as possible. This issue cannot continue if we want to succeed. If this trend continues into the next season, I'm afraid we will find ourselves in trouble. Ange, please fix this and find a solution.
There was a clip on match of the day showing 7 spurs defenders watching the corner kick taker with 5 Arsenal players behind them not being watched White was blocking Vicario Again! This schoolboy stuff.
Where was the goal scored at the near post when Arsenal ran to it unwatched!

I think Romero would be perfect as a 6 and said so in comments on several Tottenham related videos a while ago.
Positions at set pieces need to be addressed, one point there was a clip and there was 6 players not marking anyone. Teams always put someone on vic. He either needs to boss his 6 yard area or get someone on him as a bodyguard.
We need to give Ange two more windows to get his team in place. We need a world class number 9, a world class winger. Need to sort the 6 out and another creative midfielder
I think that he is prioritizing right now. Big pieces in place before you you fill in the gaps.
Romero and VdV have built up an understanding and partnership for about 2/3 of the season. Let’s leave that alone and get all these people at the club to do what they’re paid to do - identify the correct talent and get them through the doors and signed.
- We have commercial people here to help the club generate money
- We have people who head up scouting or recruitment
- We have various employees with other job remits and titles
We only have 3 CB’s. Moving Romero into a DM position means we’d need to go and sign 2 more CB’s. That would make no sense to me.
To be honest, the way we get opened up, unless that DM had the anticipation of Busquets and the athleticism of Dembele, we’d struggle anyway. The rest of the midfield get bypassed and I honestly can’t recall the last time I saw Maddison press someone and win the ball back

Playing a back three 🤔 like Porro, Romero, VDV, Dragusin and Udogie have played in before… though obviously not his favourable system. I seem to recall Ange playing a back 3 in his managerial career. (Maybe for Australia 🤷🏽♂️)
Ange should have planned that Arsenal was physically stronger - they had 5/6 players that are 6ft or taller .. as for using romeo as 6 can be used a temp means i.e. when is required. Should have played Dragusin and Richarlson - so you could at least match with Arsenal. Bayern Leverkusen play 5 at the back and use 3 CB go wide. All big managers adapt and evolve.. how many times Pep has done this and continue to do this.. Pep uses inverted wb when required - look at gvardiol only in the last few games he now inverted .. Arsenal use inverted when required.. also since xmas - how many games spurs have lost - the form is bad.. aerially spurs are bad - its clear to see..
Gianni Vio was our set piece coach. = A specialist! He left with Conte, and we didn't replace him. Instead, we gave it to Mason, who is clueless on the defensive side.

I ask this an Australian Ange fan and admirer of Mile Jedinak’s playing days and leadership for Australia and Palace - is he the the right defensive/set piece coach for Spurs? I fear not.
Fans need to embrace our progress at midfield and defense this year. Emphasize we are clearly a better team with exciting prospects such as Bergvall entering the fray next year. Hopefully, we will spend our limited resources on players that will challenge for starting positions. I would prefer a team where no player feels entitled to start, they should all strive for starting time. Until then, patience is a virtue and give our coach time to craft his trade.
In my simplistic mind, I see Romero playing like Mascherano at Liverpool in a 6.

I personally believe that we need to sign 2 defensive midfielders we need an extra 1 for backup. I'm not too sure Romero could play the 6 roll if we did bring Romero into the midfield we would still need to bring in cover in that position and then replace Romero in defence.
I hate losing to the Woolwich Scum, but I have to admit, I thought we played some fantastic football in the process. When I compare how we played, to how Chelsea and West Ham played against them, like a bunch of gutless cowards, I have to say I'm proud of the way we tried to get a major result. COYS!!! 🙋♂🙋♂

Tottenham are ahead in the game regarding the rebuild. It was small margins that cost us. We are well ahead of when Arteta took over at them. No need to panic or question Ange.
Arteta already spent 5 season at Arsenal. We played pretty well against them yesterday. Hojbjerg's goal and Saka's goal are individual mistakes. I don't think any manager tell the media the truth most of the times.
It was really players mistakes really, hopefully they learn from them and move on but don’t get me started on the robbery and set pieces
What Ange is trying to say is that we can’t even get the basics of his system down right, so why spend valuable training time on defending corners when we can’t even get the system right in the first place. Once he is happy with how we are playing in open play, the rest will come. People are getting too impatient these days. It takes years to build a solid squad in good foundations. He hasn’t even poured the concrete slab yet.

The issue is we got excited after 10 games. This season was always about shipping out the dead wood and bring in fresh faces. We are half way through that phase. We are not ready for UCL as we need another season of building. Need to ship out at least 7 players in the summer and go again.
People saying Ange out are delusional… until the meltdown against Chelsea we were unbeaten, top of the league and doing good stuff. The issue is the lack of a plan b and c. That said saying there is no issue for set pieces is also wrong, 80% possession against Arsenal and 2 nil down from 2 corners says there is an issue. In my view the lack of player consistency is the problem, Son, Biss and Madders all shite for the last 10 games and no 20 goal striker means we don’t put teams away and concede stupid goals

it's a nice idea but i don't think cuti has the ability to do what he does while receiving the ball with his back to goal and having to turn, don't get me wrong he's an amazing CB and great at charging up the pitch into space, it's just a completely different position and job and has completely different requirements on the ball, despite being super close to each other on the pitch
I don’t agree he said it’s not a problem. I think he agreed it was an issue but said we have a lot more issues than just set pieces. Which imo is right. Do you disagree with him that if we fix set pieces, all is done? That’s how I interpreted it.
The issue didn’t suddenly originate against Arsenal, it’s been going on for months and would cost nothing to fix, so why hasn’t he fixed it?
We need Dagasin somewhere in that defence. He is good at heading the ball. But Ange is ignoring him. WHY?

There is a lack of height and heading ability in the team. Harry used to screen the front post last season and the only other players who are good in the air are our CB's who need to be central.
Ange should be sacked for "gross negligence " for that statement :(
We have a significant % of our fan base that simply don’t understand the bigger picture and how long things now take to change and build. THFC seems to be the worse re this issue.

I am struggling to understand whether ange saying things like this is just because he is being put under pressure by journalist or if he actually believes in what he is saying. If so this is a big problem and ange has to get stick for it. We a loosing 3 pts every game because of set pieces , to say that it is not a problem is very worrying
He gives no indication of changing anything about his narrow view of how to play football. So let’s hope that Levy can find the absolute perfect player for every single position (rather than just those he thinks he can make a profit on), otherwise we’re f**cked.
He’s a far better defender than no6 and sure we’ll buy one - ange said 1000s of issues but his main point at moment is getting pressing issue fixed so aren’t being counted so easily and then giving away free kicks corners - he feels that main thing to fix
ange needs to copy pep again and use him in a john stones type of position. Romero still plays as a centre back but floats in the mid field at times
If as you say Romero was brilliant yesterday how comes he was part of defense that conceded 3 goals in 30 minutes? He was ok but chucking your cbs up front when 3 nil down just shows how bad the situation you must have been in to have to do it in the first place. Over 3 halves against against Newcastle and that lot we had had over 70% possession and conceded 7 goals and scored none. Maybe Romero needs show some leadership at the back, do his job and organise the defensive line a bit better and maybe defend corners better. Then he wouldn't have to play up front due our misfiring strikers forgetting where the opposition goal is. Our forwards have contributed all of 2 'in-play' goals in the last 6 games, that's not good enough either.

Yes it a good call for Romero to go to midfield but we would need another top class CB. The main problem we have is Maddison is totally out of form and Gio in his cameo contributed more than madders in the game
BTW Ange has changed and used a back 3 for Oz national team and qualified for 2018 World Cup. Just saying he’s no fool and has more in his locker than he is divulging. You honestly believe he isn’t understanding the set piece problem? Why isn’t Emery under scrutiny? Villa are the worst set piece defenders? Food for thought and insight. Face value observations are pure speculations rather than behind the scenes reality.
Romero should be team captain. Son is a great player but not a leader and is unable to influence play from being stuck up front. And what about dragusin we have hardly used him. Our better set up yesterday would have been a back three and dropping Maddison who hasn’t really been at it since returning from injury.
How were set pieces at Celtic or the other clubs where he's had success? If they weren't a problem then the issue is with the personnel.
You can’t really compare what he did at Celtic, where the opposition is generally weak and it was easier to play on the front foot with little regard for defending.
