- A grade 3 scramble up Matterhorn Ridge which is situated just off Winnats Pass in the Peak District. Just before this we scrambled up Elbow Ridge. Have a look through our channel for that video.
wow, you did this without any ropes or equipment. Holy crap. I saw another video where two dudes were climbing this with ropes. You must be real daredevils!!! Congrats!!
I’m not sure what you could actually rope to as the rock is so loose in places. We spoke to a couple of lads who took ropes and said the same so didn’t end up using them. Lots of care is certainly needed!!
'Was feeling pleased with myself today after 'conquering' Crowden Clough scramble. Then I watched this and see what REAL scrambling is, ha ha!! 'Wish i had the courage, and ability. Respect to you guys you're awesome, and thanks so much for posting.
Thanks for your kind comments Martin! Must admit, we had our moments going up this one! What didn’t help is just how loose the rocks were, there was always a feeling of insecurity! I guess that’s the attraction sometimes. We’ve not been up Crowden Clough so will take a look at it. Did you take any footage? Love the Peak District ❤️
I'm the guy in blue at the top! This is the only time I've done Matterhorn and was weighed down with unnecessary gear! Needs a revisit, what a scramble! Nice video keep up the good work 😊
Thank you! I think you would definitely be better off travelling light on that one. Iffy in places but as long as you check hand and foot holds it’s great as you well know! Would be interesting to do it again also. Thanks again 😊
Well that turned my stomach but I’ve still got to do it at some point. I’ve done the Elbow twice so I have to do Matterhorn now. Well done you two. 🤪👍
Thanks, it’s not too bad, pretty much an extended first bit of Elbow Ridge.
WoWza that turned my stomach and yet so invigorating at the same time.
Thank you for sharing, well done you guys.
😊
Thank you, it’s a tough little scramble really with a few oh crap moments thrown in for good measure!!!
Great video, about to tackle this myself. Did elbow ridge earlier this year but now coming back for this one 👍
Great little scramble though loose in places. I think Matterhorn has the edge over Elbow though 👍
@TrailRunningCouple did see the loose places in your video yes. Looking forward to it, probably have another go on elbow ridge too. Might as well 😂
@@clogsonthemountain Why not? We started from Blue John Cavern and added both Elbow and Matterhorn into a run. Rude not too!
@@TrailRunningCouple exactly my thoughts 😂
Thats a proper gusset tingler. Not sure I'm brave enough. You guys are fearless.
It certainly was and there were moments!! 😂
@@TrailRunningCouple I saw, I heard the concern, then I heard you conquer. Great stuff
Cool vid! Did this and elbow ridge last week, the semi slippery and loose limestone rocks made it not as fun as some grade 3 scrambles in Wales where the rocks are properly solid. Given how short the whole thing is, I sat on the midpoint ledge for a while counting the number of cars down below... Also don't think it's a grade 3 (maybe lower end of scale) since you can escape at a few points or take an easier route away from the centre of the ridge. But still a good adrenaline kick for a day in the peak district!
The only other Grade 3 scramble I can compare them to is Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday in the Lakes. Pinnacle Ridge and the 'crux' corner feels more difficult. As for our Welsh scrambles, they're mere Grade 1's - Crib Goch and Bristly Ridge.
As you say though, they're relatively short scrambles and over pretty quickly but very enjoyable if not a little iffy in places when hand holds literally come away!!
Thanks for your comments.
It’s actually grade 2 but when wet or windy counts as 3
Looks like a nice route. I am somewhat perplexed at the VDiff grading on UKC though.
It’s a nice route but I wouldn’t consider it to be any more than a scramble, probably somewhere between a grade 2 and 3. There’s moments up there though, especially when hand holds seem to just come away!
@@TrailRunningCouple has anyone ever fallen?
Awesome! Well done! 👏👏
Thank you 😊
Great vid! I'm one of the lads you met at the top, I've got a few pic of you on elbow ridge if you want them sending over 👍
Excellent, glad you’ve seen the video and was good to meet you both. How did the rest of your day go? If I remember rightly you were off for a scramble up the side of Mam Tor? Any photos would be great and we would both appreciate them. Email address is thetrailrunningcouple@gmail.com Thanks!
Great video, another that is on my to do list!
It’s a great little scramble. Elbow Ridge is literally at the side of it so you get two for the price of one. Both are highly recommended.
@@TrailRunningCouple awesome! I've seen a few different comments on it though, some say ropes are required yet others seem to sail up it purely scrambling?
There’s not many places you could use a rope as there’s not much to attach too and the rock is very brittle. It all depends on your confidence and ability. If you take your time with the scramble you’ll be ok 👍
@@TrailRunningCouple sounds good enough to me! Thanks for the reply and info. Awesome Chanel by the way 😎
@@s3silverbullet Thank you. I’ve subscribed to your channel as I see you’ve also taken footage of your scrambles. Addictive isn’t it??
What do you recommend for someone who has only done grade 1s to move on to tackle this? Do you think it is essential to spend time in an indoor climbing gym to build climbing skills?
I can only speak from our experience. We have no climbing, outdoor or indoor experience. Only scrambling in the Lake District and Snowdonia. We felt confident enough to just have a go. I’m not saying that will be fine for you as only you can judge your capabilities. I guess it depends where you gained your scrambling experience. I think we had only done Jacks Rake and Striding edge in the Lakes and Crib Goch in Snowdonia when we did this.
Pure madness. I see the fear in Cheryls eyes and face. I know this fear from within. I had the same face on Garnedd Llewellyn last Friday. And you are just off yer bean Gary. Never playing poker with you.
Both are great scrambles though a little hairy in places!
