  • Features a QSI Revolution DCC decoder. Speakers are located in the tender and in the smoke box. The speaker inside the tender is a 1.22" High Bass. The forward speaker inside the smokebox under the stack is a 35x16.5mm small oval speaker. I weathered the locomotive using Bragdon Enterprise adhesive powders and airbrushed acrylic paints from Floquil/PolyScale. See my video about steam weathering here: • Weathering A B&O EM-1 ...

This locomotive has a superb quality weathering job, the paint on the boiler looks very battered, worn and realistic.

Weathered equipment often looks real, but clean always looks like a toy. This unit looks great.

Beautifully done, very impressive weathering. I am always amazed about Marklin's smooth low speed control.

gorgeous, brilliant work... "first rate" just doesn't seem to describe what you have done! sir, you've got a growing cottage industry for yourself if you want it...LOL there's a huge after market for the weathering and for the additional sound you've done here. my hat's off to you. i've seen the weathering work of other modelers & you are second to none. if I had a big boy I'd give it you & pay just about anything within reason to have you do to my engine what you've done to yours. thank you. sounds & looks fabulous!!!

Very good job! It look so realistic. Märklin has just released a "new items" for the summer of 2013 which is weathered from the factory, but your model looks even better. They should hire you to do their weathering :-)

I'm sold on this brand because of it's super smoothness and realism while moving in very slow speed. Out of two other brands, this model performs the best in this important category. Nice job on the weathering, here in the states realism comes complete with graffiti.

What a great job! I'm a "UP guy" and I've seen quite a few color photos of UP steam. You did a nice job on that weathering! Looks like it has done a few trips up and down Sherman Hill. What decoder did you use? It captured the "off beats" of an articulated loco. What speakers did you use?

  • @Willysmb44

Great weathering job. I assume the strobe in the cab is supposed to be flash from the backhead? It's too regular, looks like a beacon light in the cab instead...

That slow speed is amazing, the gearing must be very low?, I think ALL our locos are geared way too high!, diesels included, gearing them down would solve many problems!

Really nice job. The sound though doesnt get the same high quality marks as the weathering, especially the whistle sound is poorly looped, one can hear without being specialized in hearing loop samples where the loop begins - perhaps due to use of outdated sampling procedures dating from the beginning of sound sampling some ten years ago.....

How did you fit such a large speaker in the tender? When I opened up my Trix Big Boy's tender, there didn't seem to be much room inside. Did you fit it sideways as in standing up?

once again very impressived , I gotta say tho , i see 1 dislike , 22 likes , and it poses the question , whats with the dislike , is it an envy thing because the hater either cant afford such a model , or is he an extremely talented artist with an ego bigger than the real locomotive ... either way .. gotta love the haters (rolls eyes) great work and awesome vid , love your work

Your weathering is overdone. It is reminiscent of a static display left out in the elements for twenty-thirty years. Too many heavy streaks of gray (oxidized paint?). But then, to the casual observer it doesn't look too bad. UPRR washed its locomotives regularly to help prevent the gray you depict. Duco Dulux - the paint used on the vast majority of steam engines - never oxidized like this under actual service conditions. Granted that there will be weathering from dirt and rust, and some chemical residue from blow-down areas near the pop valves and cylinder cocks, but not that much . . . to each his own. That's the difference between 'scale' and 'it probably would look like this' modeling. Accuracy is in the eye of the beholder.

the pandeslar watch "last of the Giants part 1" it features some big boys that look just like this towards the end of their service. the UP would seldomly wash reserve units unless they were getting used for a special purpose. maybe the owner of the Loco is modeling the time frame where these were phased out

I would contrast that with this model and say the model is understated and typical of usage

Why spend $ 1000 for a Trix big boy when you can get a much better one from MTH, alone Broadway or Genesis , Trix are garbage pullers next to a Broadway limited big boy ,

I just saw a video of an unboxing of the Trix and the reviewer from his accent and money talk is from the UK. He said he paid 100L (pounds) for his Trix Big Boy, brand new. I guess that's over $200 US, not bad.

Robert Swickard because Marklin products are well known for quality and durability. Their warranty and customer service also aren't abysmal and a joke like MTH's. Their Big Boy is a high quality model and performs just as well as the competition.
