  • This is my most important possession. This was my Grandpa's pistol, my Mom's Dad, that he bought used from a friend for $100 in 1960 when he became a reserve sheriff's deputy in Columbia County Oregon. He gave it to me in 1996 for my 21st birthday as he was dying of cancer. He passed away not long after. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor and a Longshoreman and a great man. I try not to shoot it too much because it has been fired a lot over it's lifetime. But it is still very accurate. It will be passed down to my son and hopefully his son and his son.

    I love the way this gun shows the signs of wear. You can tell it's been used a lot. You can also tell it's been maintained very well. Your gun is something to be cherished for a lot of reasons.

    I have an old holsters with the same wide leather stitching, it was made by Abercrombie and Fitch. It has different names on it by guys who used it dating as far back as 1939. Hope this helps.

    Breaks my heart to hear how your grandpa died. I watched my father die miserably from stomach cancer. I wish my grandpa could have gifted me the medieval Wallachian sword he found one day in Romania under a bridge coming home from work. Back in communist Romania in those days, you were arrested for possessing anything 'considered' a weapon. So, as the pig farmer he was, he turned the still-sharp centuries-old sword into some butcher knives. Sad story my father told my family.

      That crazy. Finding a sword like that. Very cool. My grandfather fought the cancer for 4 years before they told him he was terminal. He had an amazing life and died a happy man. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor from WW2 and lived in Oregon. Raised 4 kids and worked at the Port of Longview as a longshoreman in Washington state. He was a really cool guy. Glad I got to know him when I was growing up.

    Love seeing these type of videos. People didn't know engraving your name or other info back then would detract from the the worth. In your case since you are keeping it, it only enhances it. My dad engraved rabbits, etc when he was a kid in his dads shotgun stocks. Of course my grand fathers were always poor southern folks. I have all their guns, but I would be afraid to fire them. They are that cheap.

      I love that he put his name on it. He told me when he gave it to me that he bought it used from a friend for $100 in either ‘60 or ‘61. He joined the reserve sheriff’s posse in Columbia County Oregon and was required to get a pistol to carry. When he died he had dozens and dozens of long guns from muskets to M1 Garands. This was the only hand gun he owned. My uncles got all of his guns and were really pissed back then that I ended up with it. It was the gun they really wanted. They are over it now though.

    You should remove the grips because S&W stamped the serial number in the wood. That verifies that those grips were made for that gun. If the grip serial number differs, then the grips were swapped out somewhere in time. You probably will not see the "S" stamped in the grip. Only one side has the stamps. Makes the gun a tad more valuable when everything matches.

      @@fungdart Lawrence or Martin or Myres were the big brands way back. There's makers now that can reproduce that style. Elpaso Saddlery could likely come pretty close. Many other custom makers can also do it.

    Is one amazing gun. But please don't dry fire that gun please! I collect S&W revolvers I have a few of them and if you want to enjoy that masterpiece be careful on open the cylinder and close the correct way and never do dry fire whitout snap caps ok?👍

    • @fungdart
      @fungdart  2 роки тому +3

      That was probably the 3rd time I dry fired it 25 years. Just did it for the video. I’m careful with the cylinder too. It already sticks a little occasionally from abuse from my Grandpa. I think he used to flop the cylinder closed and I suspect the cylinder pin might be bent a little. It was incredibly filthy when I got to gun. Because he kept it under the seat of his truck for decades. But I’ve cleaned it thoroughly so many times it works smooth now.

      @@LEXxTALIONS7913 What is the risk in dry firing a smith? What part of the gun is it hard on. The hammer I’m guessing. Never really knew why I shouldn’t do it. Just that I shouldn’t.

      @@fungdart is because of the fire pin, even whit the transfer bar you can brake the firing pin, and in some oldest S&W can be hard to replace. You can dry fire but use snap caps.👍

      Not sure why he did that. But it was around 1960 or ‘61 when he got the gun. When he became a reserve sheriffs deputy. In Oregon. I think I asked him why he did that when he gave it to me but I can’t remember what he said.

      Many people throughout the years have put their SS Number on their firearms as a way to identify them if they are ever lost or stolen and later recovered. Most people do it on the grip frame under the grips. Names can be legally changed, but SSN's never change.
