When I turned 21 in 1971, I bought a 6 inch new S&W . 357 magnum Highway Patrolman which I still have. Over the years I have fired many rounds through that revolver including both .38 special but mostly .357 Magnum. It is a strong handgun and is accurate. I also managed to pick up a Model 27 which started out as an 8 3/8-inch barreled model but returned it to the factory where they re- barrelled it to a 6 inch. That too, is an excellent revolver.
The N frame S&W revolvers are animals.....I’ll have a new N frame 6.5’’ revolver video up soon and you will be very surprised at the caliber.
I inherited my dad's Model 28. I remember when he bought it, probably around 1967 before the &8 Gun Control Act. He had to go up to neither the post office or UPS to pick it up. No FFL dealer needed back then. The next year, my mother bought him a Don Hume belt and holster for it---I still remember the smell of that holster when it was new. The Highway Patrolman is still my favorite revolver and I have had more than a few. Too heavy for carry daily ---in fact I got tired of carrying the smaller Model 15 Combat Masterpiece on a belt loaded with cuffs, a radio, and mace--- but as a shooter or just to handle it can't be beat. For me it has decades of nostalgia behind it. Selling it would be like selling art of my life.

I remember this model; it was basically a Model 27 without the fine finish and without top strap checkering. I bought the Model 27 back then; kept it until the top strap began to stretch opening up the cylinder gap. I sold it.
Really? What kind of ammo were you using? I never heard of these N frames getting bent like that.
The model 27 was only offered in a 3.5-inch barrel for a long time. Later models came in 4-inch barrels. Another great video! Ironically, I just shot my 4-inch 28 with target grips made in 1978 this morning and was blown away by the performance: A playing card size group at 7 yards, double action and same size group at 10 yards single action. The heavy N-frame really tames the recoil!

I learned to shoot with this pistol, later I inherited it from my father. I have fired many other pistols but, the 28-2 is still my absolute favorite.

Stormcrow ; I picked up a 28-2 several weeks ago. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet, can't seem to find the time. I was really excited to get it.
I bought a new Pre-Model 28, 4" Blue with Target stocks for $79. in 1956, SN: S1304XX. It is a Five screw, pinned barrel. Bought it at H.H. Harris Co; 1201 S. State St., Chicago, IL. next to Chicago PD headquarters, 1121 S. State Street.

$79 in 1956 is worth $907 in 2024.
If you ever want a shocker. Get a model 1917 Smith, model 25-15, or a model 24. The 1917 specifically is almost the same weight (plus or minus an ounce) as a a 4” k frame with the heavy barrel. The tapered barrel 45s and the 44 specials weigh close to the same weight as a 6” k frame with the heavy target barrel.

A beautiful gun! Revolvers, to me, have a greater "presence" than other handguns - more so than semiauto's perhaps excepting Lugers, Mauser parabellums, and Browning Hi Power tangent sight models. The deep bluing is nice, but a more dull finish has its own strong appeal. You have found an enviable acquisition!
Revolvers definitely set themselves apart from other guns in every aspect.
If you have a Colt Police Positive chambered in .32 S&W Long, you can use those Charles Bronson clips as much as you want. Get one!
According to The Internet Movie Firearm Database, it’s likely chambered in .32-20 WCF. Trust them, they know their stuff. They write……..
The exact chambering of the revolver is never specified, but it is repeatedly confirmed to be a .32 caliber. The Colt Police Positive was chambered in three separate .32 caliber cartridges: the common .32 Smith & Wesson Long (referred to on Colt revolvers as ".32 Colt New Police" to avoid stamping their competitor's name on their weapons), the .32-20 Winchester Center Fire, a powerful rifle cartridge and, finally, the anemic and scarce .32 Long Colt. For years, we here at the IMFDB assumed that it was chambered in .32 Long, which was at one point so common it was carried by the NYPD (and chosen by Theodore Roosevelt, who was the commissioner at the time). However, upon closer inspection of screenshots it appears that the cylinder is much longer than the ones you would see on a .32 Police, which leaves the .32-20 WCF as the only possible option. This also makes more sense than the .32 Long because the muzzle flash is much more powerful than that of a .32 Long and the wounds inflicted are so much more severe. The .32 Winchester has more than twice as much energy as a .32 Long.

Since I retired I got back to my southern roots and started collecting revolver firearms. Mostly N Frames. I came across a survivor new in the box unfired 28-2 and had to jump on it. I always went for the "pretty" brite blue and nickel and stainless. This is a workhorse and couldn't be happier. Picking it up Monday after the waiting period. New subscriber and thanks for the great video. Loved the content!

My dad had a highway patrolmen. The only gun he had that i really wanted when he died. He lived in another state when that happened. I had his guns shipped to me through a ffl holder. When they showed up, The 357 wasn't among them and nobody knows nothing. I hope whoever stole it from me rots in hell. BASTERD !

Yea, the .22 is a very old design, basically the last of its kind but held on while all the others like it faded into obscurity.

Yes, it did. Thought of that late. It has the original barrel on it and the 4'' was "awaiting" installation I suppose.
Pretty sure only the .38 Short used a case diameter bullet. .38 Long ammo that I've used looked at a glance just like a .38 special.

Day to day shooting cleaning can be as gentle as a toothbrush with Ballistol but heavy deposits from neglect could use dentistry tools……it all depends.
@@MilsurpGarage I just bout a j frame from Taurus. Model 605 Toro. The manufacturer shot 💥 the gun. But they didn't clean 🪥 it before shipping out 💯. I cleaned the burnt rings outside of the cylinder. As well as the inside barrel. I used ballistol 💯. I don't think I hit around the force cone area well. When I get it back from the gun smith. I'll try it again.

Unless it’s been compromised somehow by heat or moisture, I’m sure it’s fine. Buy a new one and see if it looks feels and smells the same. If so, you have plenty to clean and lube.

I just picked up a 1974 6” Hwy Patrolman. The only thing is it didn’t come with grips. I’m trying to find a set of N frame grips.

@@MilsurpGarage I’m not sure who stole the grips. A friend owns my LGS and someone came in with a few revolvers. They were her fathers and they needed money for his funeral. He called me as soon as he acquired them because he knows I’m a wheel gun guy. I bought them from his shop. I paid a couple hundred for the 357 and a 6 inch nickel plated heritage 22 mag. I put Hogue grips just so I can use it at the range yesterday. But will find a set of originals. I couldn’t turn down the 250 for both revolvers. I have something nice that functions great and something to hand down to my daughter that shoots with me. Thank you for your content. I learned allot from you. Thank you again
Did you ever get the letter from S&W???? I was curious about the barrels myself. Been seriously considering replacing the Highway Patrolman I sold. Even when I sold it I REALLY didn’t want to. But my only transportation broke down and it was a total loss. The darn thing spun a barring in hindsight the job I was worried about losing ended up being a dead end anyways. But I was trying to be a responsible man and a revolver wasn’t going to get me to and from work.
If your situation has improved, and you really miss it, get another!
Didn’t get the letter but found the original receipt that showed it to still have the original barrel in place. Original owner must have bought the shorter one for a possible alteration that never happened.
@@MilsurpGarageoh yeah!!!!! things are on the up for me I see a highway patrolmen in my future here very soon!!!! I already rolled up some full house loads to enjoy through one. Can’t wait to have a revolver that can take a steady diet of magnum loads without worrying at all whatsoever. I own other fairly well built revolvers such as my Security Six. Even though the Security Six line is known to be a tank i still want to keep it in good condition those revolvers are now becoming collectors.
