A bit of information for you. When first trying Vegemite, there is ONLY one way to try it. You need hot toast smothered with butter NOT margarine and then put a SMALL amount on the TIP of the knife and spread it very sparingly over the entire toast. It should look LIGHT BROWN in colour, NO darker. Just remember, a little goes a long way. It is also a good flavour enhancer for gravies, stews and casseroles. From my understanding, it maybe quite similar; it is made from leftover brewer's yeast, combined with malt extract and salt.

When I moved to Australia I kept running into people saying “Not happy, Jan” when things had gone wrong or someone had stuffed up. That was one of those ads that entered the public consciousness. You still sometimes hear people say it but I think the ad hasn’t aired for about 20 years so it’s not so common now.
Vegemite. Yes, you should try it and you’ll probably find it in the larger supermarkets. We had a big Tesco near us where my wife got Vegemite. It’s sort of like Marmite in that it’s a yeast spread, but the taste and consistency is different. I’ve never liked Marmite but there’s something about Vegemite that I quite enjoy. It’s strong though so when you first try it less is definitely more.
Fun Vegemite fact: the smell from the Vegemite factory in Melbourne, which you can often smell from the nearby freeway, has heritage protection. I am absolutely not making that up.

    • @user-rp3di3ik3h

BUT, Vegemite was (TRUE) first discovered "(Between The Rats)", at a town called Beaufort, slapbang, right between "The Rats", being Ararat, AND Ballarat.
Our army, WW2, fighting off The Japs, up in PNG& DARWIN, used to get their Vegemite, in tubes, like toothpaste tubes.

"Caramello Koala" was a riff on the 1960s Donavan song "Mellow Yellow". In the 60's and into the 70's you could use a current song in advertising by paying a small license fee. This led to many great advertising jingles (as they were called) because all the advertising company had to do was pick a very popular hit song and get someone to write some words to it and they had a guaranteed ear worm that people would go around singing. Later on they had to get permission (from the composer or copyright owner) to use the song in advertising, and that led to very high licensing fees to secure the rights to use it. That was pretty much the end of really great jingles on TV and radio with some few exceptions. It probably did create more revenue for the composers initially because previously the small license fees would have been paid to the record companies while the composer was under contract.
A music teacher I had in the 90's used to make a bit of extra money by writing advertising jingles, since by then using tunes from the record charts was getting horrendously expensive. A lot of these jingle composers are quite talented in their own right, however it's not a great formula for great catchy tunes since the pay is small and you have to churn them out quickly.

"Not Happy Jan" became a cultural saying after that advertisement. Still is among those over 35.
If you try Vegemite, and already eat Marmite, probably put on about70% as much as you would marmite. If you do NOT eat marmite, think how much peanut butter you would put on if you were only putting on "a little", halve it, halve it again, then make it a bit less. Have it on buttered toast, and maybe have a slice of cheddar to the side to try to compliment the taste if it's a bit much for you.
That said, saying you or someone else is a "happy little vegemite" is still a thing. It's a way to say you were pleased or content about the situation. (Vegemite was a local creation made from beer yeast during the (1st?) world war when we couldn't import marmite.
Edit: Goddammit! After 30 years I ALMOST got that cottees jingle out of my head. Now it's back! Argh!!!! *laughs*

Vegemite is the Aussie version of Marmite because we couldn’t import Marmite so we made our own. Yours is thick and sticky like molasses pr honey, whereas Vegemite is a smooth, shiny paste. It’s very salty so start out with a very light smear on buttered toast or untoasted white bread. If you add too much, you’ll regret it, but if you add too little, taste it and know you can handle more, do so very gradually.

Vegemite, the trick is just a little on toast. You work you’re way up from there.
Any Aussies remember the rude version of Cottee’s song? It was popular in primary school.
Since I found your channel, I have been laughing. There is quite a bit of slang she missed - yobbo, bludger, bogan…
And, I have thought of so many ads… if you want some more ads or a very funny on learning ‘Australians’ (as in Australians is what we speak rather than English), let me know.
If I list them here you might not see it and your viewers might.
Loving some true Aussie style, it’s getting a little around here these days, I needed the reminder. Thanks for your channel.
    From Melbourne 🇦🇺
In answer to your question from the slang video, Melbourne is about 1000 kms from Sydney. For some Aussies a driving Manchester to London would be a daily commute to work.
How close everything is in the UK and Europe was just weird. I could drive through multiple countries in less time that I could drive the border of Victoria.
Google a map of Europe overlaid on a map of Australia 🤯
Oh, and there are differences in culture, speed, vocabulary and a little inter-state rivalry and other delights for you to discover in your travels. It’ll be an awesome adventure.
I should clarify one thing from the slang video, she wasn’t from New South Wales or Queensland. I know this by how she defined football. This is important if you go north of Victoria. In Victoria and other sensible States football is Aussie Rules Football (the clue is in the name).
She (I don’t know her name) correctly stated ⚽️ is not football but soccer. But she didn’t clarify this definition does not apply in certain States.
By the time you are north of Sydney football starts to refer to either Footy or Rugby. I have no idea what rugby is about. It looks like American Grid Iron to me, without the safety equipment. I don’t know the rules or the point but they seem to run with ball and purposely crash into each other.
I may have spent my whole life blissfully unaware of this but I spent time in high school in Queensland All
I figured out is there there is rugby league and rugby Union and they are apparently different but both seem to be called football. 🤷‍♀️
Aussie rules will always be football to me! 🏉 ⬅️ is a football. If you are in Victoria, this is important to know we are the ones who play real footy and shared our game with the rest of the country! 😂

Vegemite is the residue from the making of beer. Loaded with B vitamins. Salt added.

When you try Vegemite, don't go the 'macho' rout and eat a spoonful straight off. It's very salty, so start with a little and work your way up. Yes, it's sort of like marmite, but made from a yeast extract. Also, dissolve in a little hot water and add into sauces, etc, to boost the flavour of the sauce. Think of it like Soya Sauce.

They made a sequel to the Great Wall of China ad several months ago. The young boy in the original ad as an adult is driving and his nephew is in the back seat. The nephew asks a question that his uncle can’t answer correctly, but the nephew had his tablet of iPad and looks up the correct answer straight away.

If you do try Vegemite, (which is a lot like Marmite...only better!), butter your bread or toast first and then spread the Vegemite VERY lightly over it. Don't let anyone trick you into piling it on thick!! We Aussies simply don't eat it like that. You can also make a Vegemite Soup in a cup by pouring boiling water over 2 or more heaped teaspoons of Vegemite and adding salt to taste. I love dipping bread and butter fingers in it. Just delicious! As for the ads... search UA-cam for the 'No Milk Today' ad. It's so funny!

Marmite and Vegemite. In that they are both yeast-extract based, they're similar. But Vegemite has reduced onion juice, reduced carrot juice, reduced celery juice, and allegedly 'spices' as well. Vegemite has way more salt than Marmite

If you do try Vegemite, make sure you don't put too much on the bread.
Its a very thin layer you want, over an equivalent spread of butter.
Vegemite on Toast is great, eaten while still hot, or for a healthy lunch try Vegemite and cheese on bread.

Go to a Hotel, stay the night and breakfast. At breakfast there should be little bubble packs with Vegemite. The finest smear on your buttered toast. So fine you can see through it, for a nice first taste. Don’t be adventurous and eat it off a spoon.
