Making the clip reportedly cost US$5 million (US$9.6 million in 2022 making "Bedtime Story" one of the most expensive music videos of all time. It was the most expensive video at the time of its release, alongside the clip for her single "Express Yourself" (1989).Tom Foden was the video's production designer and it was shot by cinematographer Harris Savides, on 35 mm film lens. Due to the vast number of digital effects required for the video, post-production lasted for weeks.

This video had a lot of imageries inspired by paintings by female artists.

This video was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was the very first time that a music video was acquired by a museum as a piece of art, and it's now part of their permanent collection.
The video was inspired by surrealist painters Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Dorothea Tanning and Frida Kahlo, and some scenes are direct representations of their paintings. It was also inspired by the movie "The Color of Pomegranate" also recreating some scenes. Anther big inspiration for the video was Jungian psychology, and the concepts of collective unconscious, archetypes and synchronicity. And finally it was inspired by Sufism, which is the mystical side of islam, represented in the whirling dervishes, who perform this dance in which they get unconscious while spinning, and they say they connect with God and the Universe.
To me the 90's was Madonna's most creative and artistic decade. Erotica already had great videos like Bad Girl and Rain, and this album had Secret, Take a Bow, Human Nature and Bedtime Story, all amazing artistic videos, completely different from each other. And the singles from Ray of Light will also have the most stunning videos. And the music too was amazing, from the trip-hop sound of Erotica to the R&B style of Bedtime Stories to the most exquisite electronic music in Ray of Light. The 90s's truly was her best dacade.

The video was shot in a entire week in december 1994. Mark Romanek directed this video and already work for the video of ''Rain''. Mark Romanek already work with Madonna before, because he originally planned to directed the video of ''Bad Girl'', but finally, David Fincher directed the video. Later, Madonna remember him for asking originally that and calling him to asked to direct the video of ''Rain''.
When she planned the video for this song, she wanted to work again with Mark to the direction of this video. With a budget of 5 millions $, she wanted to explored the abstract, the surrealists and the unconscious concept of this song for the video and she paid a lot for all the background, the dressing and all thing in the video.
After it's came out, it's was well received by MTV and the critics and many museums in US playing permanently the video all the time for all the visitors of museums. The video was a hit in MTV while the song wasn't a hit and her first single to missing the top 40 in US since 1983.

As for Kylie & Madonna - the queens for the most part love our divas and the divas even love and respect each other. They’ve been asked about one another over the years, Kylie has referenced Vogue in one of her live performances, Madge wore the Kylie shirt…lots of little silly interactions. Then there was the PHOTO when they were photographed together the first time at 2013 Met Gala except Kylie was hidden behind somebody. So we had a photo of them together but we didn’t. I think since then the queens have been gagging to see the ladies together. Then it finally happened - and the world stopped for second. Madonna gave Kylie the most gorgeous intro on stage the other week. Everyone is happy except two or three stans on either side 😂

I've always interpreted the video as a lucid fever dream. The song's all about "let's get unconscious." You know when you wake up and you've had those kind of dreams where they seem so vivid and yet weirdly out there and bizarre, and then you think to yourself where the hell did that all come from? That's the feeling she captured for me with this video.

She wasn't pregnant yet. A rough estimate, she got pregnant in January 1996. This was like right before she conceived, by maybe a month or so. You will get to see her pregnant in an upcoming video, and if you watch Evita (which I can't recommend enough) you will catch a few scenes where she's clearly pregnant.
First thoughts on the video? It fit the song perfectly. Lucid dreaming combined with nods to incredible pieces of art. She managed to capture what lucid dreaming feels like. It's stunning.

Madonna has always had “critics.” Madonna doesn’t get the respect because she’s still here and they thought she would have been done. Hey Baby Empress. Blonde Annie is perfect. This video fits the song perfectly lucid. In retrospect, Madonna needed this, although at the time people probably wondered where did this come from? It’s like a curveball but not really an unexpected one because Madonna threw them plenty of times. It’s just another example of Madonna taking a chance and stepping into places that another pop star would not have and that’s what’s made Madonna, MADONNA. The reason she is still on the scene and still able to have a sold out world tour, while a lot of her contemporaries have fallen by the wayside or have been relegated to “oldies” tours. Empress so happy to see you back🙏🏿❤️🙏🏿❤️.

    - ...G-ay fans of Kylie & Madge went NUTS, because this was LONG in the making (1:27); Kylie hit #1 Pop (UK) (as a Singer) Feb. 1988, when Madonna was #1 Dance (in the USA, on the Dance charts) w/ the "You Can Dance" Album....yet, they NEVER met! (except in private); Madonna wore 'Kylie' shirts (during the "Music" era), & wished her well during her chemo treatments in 2005(?)...
    - ....Kylie was VERY influenced by Madge, but got VERY tired of the comparisons, and stayed away from her.....Kylie was *THE FIRST* Singer to find her 'way' through Madonna's trailblazing, and this moment became a defining moment of 'Thanks'....that the G-ays KNEW would happen......

Luther didn't have AIDS. I'm not sure what ultimately killed him, but I know that he had a stroke which led to the end of his performing career, and his health gradually declined until he passed away. Luther was a severe yo-yo dieter; he used to regularly teeter totter from being basically obsese to being gaunt/skinny. Which can create all sorts of health issues.
This is actually news to me. I didn't know Madonna said this. She didn't have her facts straight, which is one of several reasons why I tend to avoid current Madonna. These days, her actions make me cringe more than smile. Madonna has always had haters even during the height of her popularity but it has gotten worse as she continues to push the envelope as she ages. She is also one of the “chosen” one to pick on by the MAGA movement. They are obsessed with her since her “Blow up the White House” comment was heavily taken out of context when Trump was elected. Mid / late nineties is an era where she starts to gain a lot of “Lifetime” achievement recognition but that quickly is forgotten by the 2010’s and now. Lots of interviews and one-off performances but no tour during this era. Even though she was not pregnant “YET”, you will see through this video and interviews that Madonna’s desire to be a MOM becomes a hot topic/obsession of the public going forward.

When she didn't, they started in with very ageist remarks that were relentless. Then when Madonna had work done, it only gave them more bait. She'll get her due respect one day. I think the whole Bedtime Stories era for me was kind of a blur at the time, but looking back I think it's one of her stronger, most cohesive albums. Same goes for this video. I don't think it got a huge amount of rotation at the time, but it is possibly one of the most artistically creative ones anyone has ever done. The premise is that it's Madonna's random and trippy dreams and the imagery is based on all women surrealist artists. As a result, we see imagery of women at virtually all stages of life.... childhood, romantic love, pregnancy and motherhood, and death. There are all sorts of interesting clues... like the poppy seeds the young man is holding that are used to create opium, which can be used to numb pain or help you sleep at best... or become addicted or overdose at worst. I think for the casual viewer, it just went over people's heads, but it's been recognized as a work of art and the MOMA in NYC has a copy that they keep in their permanent collection.

Woo-hoo ANOTHER Madonna reaction ❤❤❤ Finally got to see her live after being a fan for almost 40 years January 9, 2024 in Boston Massachusetts and it was a dream come true 🎉💯🫶❤️ Some of her fans have been hating on her for her lower energy and not as much dancing but all I can say I'd like to see them doing that at 65 lol.

I grew up in Boston. I saw her this time in Brooklyn at the Barclay Center. I’ve been going to her tours since 01. I had tix for the blonde ambition tour in Worcester ma but she canceled. I cried! She did 2 shows there and my friend got tickets and she performed one but had laryngitis on the second day. I did get my hands on an original blonde ambition tour jacket tho!

@eileendovernyc Oh my gosh, heartbroken for you about the Blonde Ambition Tour but thrilled for you about the original jacket, I was only 15 at the time but unfortunately my mother couldn't afford it at the time. My first concert I was 22 was in Boston where a very pregnant Cyndi Lauper opened for Tina Turner and it was incredible! Since then I'd seen Culture Club, Margaret Cho, Sophie B. Hawkins, Tori Amos, and Cher, just to name a few. I REALLY wish I could have seen the Confessions Tour, Sticky & Sweet Tour and The Reinvention Tour! Which was your favorite tour?⁰

    • @eileendovernyc
      @eileendovernyc 6 місяців тому

@@josephprovencher6345my favorite was between Reinvention and MDNA. Mdna’s production value was epic. Reinvention was the closest to a greatest hit tour she’s ever done except the celebration tour. I cried when I couldn’t go to blonde ambition. I was 14 and had to sneak out of the house. I totally would have been caught but I didn’t care. I was elated to get the tour jacket though. An older friend who I knew back then offered to take me to BA and he bought the tickets. He got a refund if I remember correctly. Mdna I also went with my mom who I’m super close to nowadays so that was a special occasion for me. Madonna is the thread that weaves through my life and each album is tied to a memory. Madonna 83 was one of my first albums even though I was like 7 or 8. @empress it’s great to see you back on the Madonna journey!

Isn't it amazing how she spent a decade literally defending the music video as an art form until she managed to have the first video ever to be part of one of the most important museums in the world, as an art piece? It's not always about being commercial or popular - this was an important mark as she was slowly gaining the respect she never had as an artist, even within the fine art world. One of my all time fave!

The video is as avant garde as the song. It is a standout on the otherwise more midtempo R&B album. I do think it was ahead of its time, its 30 years old and still sounds fresh now. I love it but its not for everyone. Its definitely not a regular mainstream pop song. Still went to #4 in the UK even before the video dropped. She could have released a more radio friendly single for sure but hey she's Madonna. The video got a huge budget, was one of the most expensive videos of all time when it was released.
She finally performed this for the first time on a tour on the current Celebration show. There is also a Brits Awards performance from 1995 that you have to react to. It'S a very Queen Of Pop takes over London vibe haha

I was BLOWN AWAY the first time I saw this video. I was well accustomed to Madonna being a consummate music video creative and performer, in terms of her collaborations with directors and her irrepressibly charismatic presence on camera, but the culture was changing into the 90s, and she was both adapting and leading it yet again. The wonderfully unique Bjork had burst onto the pop scene with her solo work, and trip hop was bubbling and glitching its sophisticated way out of England and Europe, so when Madonna did this song, and then released this trip of a video, I nearly licked the screen to see if I could get higher! 😂 Worth rewatching for all the details, especially to watch that last freaky shot of her with her facial features swapped, because the lyric that expresses is perfect: “and all that you’ve ever learned, try to forget…” What could be more essential than our preconception of the structure of a human face… if we forget that then we are truly leaving logic and reason.
The video was inspired by some of her favourite surrealist painters, including her beloved Frida Kahlo as well as Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. There are numerous cultural references from many cultures, reflecting an accelerating appreciation (and appropriation) of diverse world culture that was happening in the 90s, and continues today. That factor also foreshadows directions Madonna will commit to even more in her later 90s work 🤫.
All her work is highly artist-driven popular art, and this video exemplifies not only that collaborative authorship, but directly pays tribute to painters in her own collection. Last time she did that was when she featured a Tamara de Lempicka painting at the start of her Open Your Heart video, and used her paintings as inspiration for some of her looks and poses in Express Yourself.
In fact the Bedtime Story video itself ascended to high art when it was added to the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
PS: The dude who gets the closeup on the line “and inside we’re all still wet” Guilty as charged! 😂
