This is a seriously good pedal
One more thing: it would be interesting to see what sound comes out if you connect *_two_* Duke of Tone pedals in series, compared to the sound of both channels in the KOT.
It wasn't "allegedly" built based on the Bluesbreaker, Analog Mike said it himself 😂
I should have kept my old Bluesbreaker pedal.
Absolutely. I think that these guy should have done a bit more research. Certainly not a tubescreamer, no matter how many SRV licks you play through it.
Very cool demo. Great playing from both of you guys. Thanks for the upload.
I ordered one as soon as I saw this was coming out. I already have a Joyo “king of kings” clone, and it’s great, but honestly I wanted this one just because it’s an official clone of half of the circuit, and there’s just something so cool about the color, the mini for factor, and it beefs up your signal in just the right way before you hit the front end of the amp. Love it. Mine ships sometime in October.
Truly one of the best videos on gear testing I've seen - and I've seen a few 😄. Great playing, great tone, and accompanied with good knowledge of the subject. What more could you wish for? Cheers, Thor
Thanks, Thor! It's always great getting such positive comments from our viewers, glad you enjoyed it!
Jim Wieder is the guitarist responsible for this pedal- EVERYONE here should check out his work, especially the old fender/tele videos he did…. Story goes, he was using an old TS and wanted a pedal with less mid hump, high end cut, etc etc. Mike, familiar with the BB circuit which sort of does that but is much more compressed (original has like no headroom…), used that as a template and made the v1 KOT for Jim. Its one of those pedals that enhances a great rig but wont correct a bad one. Ill never take one of my board, it perfectly eqs a guitar (especially a tele) for a live mix
I have Jim Wieder spec Tele pickups. The neck pickup is just a delight.
Peach Guitars' best sounding video! And that strat. 🔥😻
I've ordered two from you, and I can't wait to get them!
I guess in the distant future they will have "The Robinhood of Tone", "The Sherrif of Nottingham Tone", the "Tavern Wench of Tone", etc. etc. and they will all sound like SRV blasting out blues riffs on various Fender Marshall JTM, and Dumble amps!
What about Kingsley having the Page, Squire, Harlot, Minstrel etc etc
@@chesneytube1 Ooooo I love the “Harlot of Tone”! Acronym would be “HOT” 😝
@@chesneytube1 pedal should have a Jekyl vs Hyde toggle switch! The tone potion!
comment of the year award goes to....
I want a sasquatch of tone
It comes down to what someone can afford and what they are going to use it for. They both sound great 😎👍👌💯🎸🎸
Great review - especially the countyish riffs. Thanks!
Wonderful tones and sick playing 🤩🤩👌
Great video. Almost too close to tell the difference. For the price and form factor, it's unbeatable. Analog Mike says the putting two Duke of Tones together is like having a King of Tune with flexible tone routing options.
Nice production! Thanks
Wow, you just can't get any more thorough than this. What an incredibly comprehensive review. And what stellar playing by both testers, too. This really helps. Thank you!
I had the Chinese pedal, XinSound RM20 Skydrive Overdrive... it's made by the Chinese manufacturer for the Prince of Tone of AnalogMan, so it's very good and cheap. But I always wanted a mini pedal version, so this MXR looks even better... definitely in the top of my wishlist.
I picked one up it’s a great little pedal very useful in band context
I know it’s hip to distance one’s self from the Tube Screamer. I have a stock Ibanez TS808 reissue and it is righteous. Yes, even as an overdrive into my clean Vox amp.
Also pretty silly when that's not the topology either of the Tone's are based on.
Wish you could have prepared a little more and looked at the boost/drive switches on the KOT and also verified the KOT to be high gain or not. Still a good demo. Thanks.
Really like Humbuckers and P90’s with style of circuit. Strat had a lot of (…too much?) bite! Most importantly, how does it hit YOUR amp, with YOUR guitar??? I love the sound of my Dr Z Z28, and I use an Overdrive essentially as another channel/Lead sound. Have a JHS Morning Glory, but prefer an old OCD with my Strat.
Echoing another post, these are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC guitars and amps…and great players! 😉
Which speakers are you guys using with the Two Rock? Sounds incredible!
Amazing sound! So, how does the stereo happen around 3:40?😅
Strat sounds great on the boost side of the KOT... a real 'juicy explosion', that's how I think of it.
I would love to hear all this stuff through a Fender Deluxe.
We need to see more of Jack and John doing videos!!!
Everyone should watch Analogman's video on this!
I grind off the paint of my pedals to make them more transparent
Should be getting mine end of the month
KoT ships with red (right) side OD and yellow (left) side Clean Boost. So the KoT should have been demoed with the right side to compare OD. If you kick in both sides at once then the EQ curves add up to a bit more mid push than either side alone. This is a good thing, since usually you are trying to make the OD louder with the clean boost (to make your solo louder), and the mids should be distorting first. The left side can be made to distort by cranking the gain or boosting the input to the pedal, but in Clean Boost mode the distortion will be from just the op amp, not the clipping diodes.
The Les Paul with the P90 going through the MXR Duke of Tone in overdrive mode, into that Dr. Z amp..., thát's the sound I was most excited about.
I'm tempted, but with my collection of gain pedals already on the board, I'd be crazy to add another one, or replace one of those. I'm happy with what I have. 😊
Is it ever crazy to add another pedal to the board, Mario? Plus, it's only little, I bet you could find some room!
@@PeachGuitars : Hahaha, I can try to pretend…. 😬
What inda Strat is that ? And the PU´s ? Such a great sounding Guitar!
I just mailed with Analogman because I have reached top of the waiting list. So I am in the rare situation that I might have the chance to get the KOT earlier than the Duke ;)
Anyway I might decide to get the Duke as a backup. Both great pedals.
Great demo and playing btw. 👍
Got my POT 6 months ago, still sorting it out.
KoT has a bit more mid push on the yellow (clean boost) side than the red (OD) side. I discovered this when I was trying out a bunch of different op amps in my KoT, setting both sides to clean boost and switching back and forth. The PoT and the Duke are both a little more gainy than the KoT.
May I ask you what a new one costs?
@@seanmurphy26 yesss sure. It is 275 USD + shipment. I have the slightly higher gain option on the red side which was another 10 USD. I would say I'm also still in the process of sorting it out. But it is truely amazing from the beginning. I have to say the amp-like-feel with the KOT imo is really amazing like I personally have not experienced before. Analogman has pricing with all possible options on their webpage.
I have always preferred the Protein or Pantheon as the best Blues Breaker style pedals to my ears, but I do like the Analogman version almost as much.
snouse black box is also great.
I have a feeling the main tone I like is the two rock underneath all this.
Jack's fingers maybe
You have hit the nail on the head! All distortion / OD pedal demos are really amp + speaker + cabinet demos. It is always nice if the demo includes some clean amp settings so we can hear what the pedal is actually doing.
Brilliant that you fellas are doing this. I’ve heard loads of rubbish king of tone videos in the past that has shown how the pedal sounds on top of average / poor tones. I haven’t even listened to this yet but I know it’s going to sound brilliant with your gear / playing.
Love you guys
That LP Jr sounds fantastic
Splendid! Les Paul Jr. or Historic Custom Shop LP Jr.?
Sounds great!! What type of stereo effect do you have on the guitar??
Room reverb?
Fine guitar playing. Y'all make any pedal or guitar sound good. Let get ahold of it, I can make it sound crappy
A significant difference in treble...to MXR's disadvantage...This is crucial in overdrive/distortion type effects. Digital amp or effects simulations continue to struggle with the same problem. Unfortunately, I hear it in this MXR presentation as well. The hardness of the treble is nothing cool.... unless one's ears are already severely worn out :)
Nah. The tone pot can be dialed slightly different so they don't sweep exactly the same. Or the actual toggle switch setting may be slightly different and the original is not exactly on Boost.
Anyways, I find the MXR one is better because it's available and very close in tone. That little extra treble you hear, can be EQd out with either lowering Presence or Highs. Or using slightly older strings hahah but for the most part.... pretty unnoticeable.
Now that’s a watch John.
I just got my DoT today and could not get it to sound quite like my 2017 KoT (1.5yr waitlist customer) on any setting. DoT has a smaller sound with a bit more fizziness on the top end. KoT sounds more open and articulate. It’s got a bigger sound. Really wanted to swap out to the cheaper mini and save some space plus net some gains for more gearz. Anyone else experience this?
Thank you for the useful demo.
If I may make a suggestion, when you do A/B switching, it works better if you play *_the same exact thing_* across the two devices as you switch between them.
Otherwise, if, as you go from one pedal to the other, you change the dynamics or the volume or other elements in the sound coming from the guitar, the listener may be easily fooled into thinking that those changes were caused by the pedal itself, rather than by the player.
What do you use Amp?
The Duke has more "mid" because it's a POT, which is one side KOT with the high gain mod... which is what you were supposed to compare it to. If that KOT has the high gain mod, it was very likely the one on the right. Mercury pre shadow, everyone!
😐...yes
If only musicians these days put as much passion and energy into actually writing and creating great new music and telling powerful stories and exploring the human condition together as they do obsessing over equipment and every other pointless superficiality that's in fact all just about selling products and making money from the masses.
@@AD-kv9kj or alternatively, each to their own and if some folk get a kick out of germanium more than silicone, or 6V6 more than EL84 etc, more power to ‘em.
Wanted to get the Duke but my lil Timmy sounds awesome .. I’ll stick with thy
Would this stack well with a Morning Glory?
This is off topic but Jack is the most dynamic and original player I've heard in the last ten years!!
Good enough
Left side isn't Standard mode, it's Clean Boost. Right is the Overdrive side.
Can someone tell me what that rather lovely Strat is?
My humble opinion - you needed to turn down the treble on the Duke of Tone (to bring up the bass). The Duke was sounding thin compared to the King.
Wonder if the scalpers will buy these up.,
PoT vs Duke might be a better comp. Also, playing through a Two Rock is pretty high end. The Duke is a “budget” pedal. Maybe playing through a more common amp would be better. I would like to hear it through an amp sim of some kind as well. So many possibilities. Great playing, wicked tone. 😉👍
I usually dislike mini pedals, most just sound mini compared to the original. This one though sounds massive.
I owned a KOT. After spending a good week trying to dial it in, I found a couple of other pedals much more practical for a nice boost. OCD v4 and a Barber LTD SR. Like the the guy said in video if it's not really cranked up for a big show it's not the best option in most live applications. And definitely overpriced.
I have had ocd v4 for 10 years ? And it’s NEVER left my board. I took the germanium transistor out the circuit on mine 100% no flubbing out
Love my OCD.
I think the Duke actually caught my ear more than the King. I kinda liked it more...
Sounds brittle to me…KOT sounds smooth and buttery
It depends on what you like, they’re both good pedal, you can’t go wrong with both of them. Let’s put it this way, I you have money to burn then get a king of tone, but if you don’t want to spend tons of money then get duke of tone. That’s easy.
That is one sweet piece you’re wearing on your wrist, sir….
Your wrong analog man said its a bluesbreaker pedal with top of the line parts better then the original bluesbreaker and he put his touch on it with the three way switch
Sold my third KoT a few weeks ago. Great pedal, I just needed the money. Sold it for $600, and used the money to buy me a guitar. Been on the waiting list for a few years, so no worry.
The DOT sounds great. For $150, it sounds even better. I have lots of overdrives including three AnalogMan modified pedals. I love his work and his attention to detail is reflected well with this collaboration. This pedal will ultimately succeed or fail because of its own merits not the KOT mystique.
Well done guys. Did I miss the amp being used?
two rocks
sounds awesome! Like anything would with this mix. I think you've got some kind of delay and pan thing happening or a distant mic going on some kind of trickery to my ears. There's a stereo sound coming through making it sound huge. Prob wouldn't hurt to mention your mix magic.
I own a KoT and love it. The MXR may sound similar or even the same but no one will ever walk up, look at your board with the MXR on it and admire it like the original KoT.
Two Duke of Tones is a little more money than one new King of Tone and three years sooner. I get the impression that there are so many good cheap clones about that Analog Man have decided to cash in on a licensed clone.
Just what i needed, another OD...
Yep. Its an overdrive. Its got volume, tone and gain knobs. What we are hearing is custom shop guitars through two rock amps . They could ve switched to a blues driver or a joyo clone mid demo, and absolutely no one would ve noticed
Yes to the average listener all overdrives would be basically indistinguishable... I laugh about this sometimes when people are comparing different klones and I think 99.999% of people couldn't even tell the difference between a klon and a tube screamer or a blues breaker (or any other type of overdrive for that matter), especially on a low resolution format like mp3 or whatever youtube uses... in the room I could absolutely tell the difference between the tube preamp of a tube tape echo and a pedal version. However you don't feel cool playing cheap gear hahah that's how I think of it. Cheap plastic does not inspire. The gear's there to make you feel good. They are subtle expressions of your personality that perhaps few people, perhaps only you are going to notice... like the frame on a painting, if you put the Mona Lisa in a gaudy plastic frame it would look worse.
@@chesneytube1 the only place you really here the difference is in your bedroom lol, in the studio the mixer will EQ it any way, same for live.
@@jessevandendoren I don't play in my bedroom
Exactly
@@TrickyTrav967 Exactly what?
Let's be honest, that strat has THE SOUND
Yeah his clean sound at 3:50 is already perfect
the TubeScreamer sound is just so played-out. I don’t feel like I need that sound.
Excellent playing, though, really inspired stuff.
It’s not a tube screamer sound. It’s a blues breaker sound. Duh.
@@andrewskuta63012 😂
The end of this video shows what people may have noticed (and groused about). Jack is sitting up and presenting information guitarists need, cheerfully and clearly. John has his face in his hand, apparently unhappy with the fact that the MXR pedal kept pace with his KOT. Nothing personal. It's just bad form.
00:05 Specs on this magnificent strat, please? 🔥👌
Ridiculously tasty players, btw!!
Big difference lol
The KOT is the most over priced dirt box ever. People are making clones for a fraction of the cost. I have one and it's great. Just sayin
Would anyone be able to tell in a mix ? I doubt it
I mean, in a studio setting differences between overdrives become minimal anyway.
Yeah, I don't think AnalogMan and Dunlop would have done this partnership if they could make the DoT sound like a PoT, but it's nice to hear a confirmation.
Bigger is better
It all depends how big your pedalboard is
@@stevest3v3 😂
Maybe. But no one would ever hear it if you didnt tell.
We need a video where john plays a shit guitar into a shit amp and still makes it sound good
For the time you spent whining that you don't have 2 channels you could have hooked up 2 of the little guys together and get 2 channels. Guitar players....
The unofficial, official selling point for the Duke. Beware, viewers! Get your wallet ready
MXR sounds better 😊
A 1981 tube screamer is way better , no comparison a real 1981 tube screamer smokes both of these hype pedals
Guess you missed the JHS show proving that wrong. They all sound the same. Pretty much.
Far be it from me to suggest comparisons are a waste of time. One little thing which requires a tiny bit of reading, impedance in and out. It boggles the mind that guitarists after all this time do not seem to understand impedance, bandwidth and headroom. I simple check of specs makes the KoT pedals having 1M ohm input and a lower output depending on bypass or buffered option circuit. One would have be completely stupid to imagine something like an MXR 450k in and 10k out would be similar to an original Kot no matter Prince or King. MXR stuff has terrible headroom and impedance, w the exception of the EVH Phaser. I would imagine the MXR Timmy suffers the same fate. They cannot compare unless of course ones ears are as bad as the brain they are wired to. lol
You can run the Duke Of Tone at 18v, if that makes a difference.
Stop. You're just going to cause this to be sold out as soon as it's released and the used price will double.
Another pedal!? Same ole riffs and tones... You know half of what you hear is the guitarist and the guitar choice.... whatever. I do have a collection from the time in my life when I was chasing tone and FX... now I just play and groove my own way (...yep, a Hendrix quote)!
Mostly it's the speaker in the cab
you are comparing apples and oranges.... should be comparing this against a prince of tone... since that is what the pedal is directly copying... even analog mike said that himself...
and why talk about tube screamers so much? this is not a tube screamer pedal....
nice click bait title...
You British youtubers make a 3-5 minute video last 30+…not as bad as TPS all over an hour, but still…
Just goes to show how overpriced the KOT is.
$275 US is NOT overpriced for a dual channel, hand built drive pedal, made with premium components, but if you want to spend $1000 on Reverb and not wait, that's your choice.
@@TweedToneKing Okay...lol
Chinese clone pedals are so cheap for several reasons. They did not have to do any R&D to build their first pedal. All they need to do is start up an assembly line and ship it. Quality of parts and assembly is often poor. Service after the sale is also not as good.
@@JohnShalamskas I've never had an issue with cheap pedals
