Today let’s look at the BEST PRINTERS for crafters and makers. My goal is to help you make the right choice for your projects, whether you’re interested in inkjet printing or sublimation printing! Because printers are NOT all made equal, and you need the right printer for the job.
Printers come in many sizes and types. Over the years I’ve owned MANY printers - HP, Lexmark, Epson, Canon, Brother, you name it, I’ve probably used it at some point since 1988 - yes, I’ve been using printers for over 35 years now! Most recently, I’ve used an HP Envy inkjet printer - I got it in 2017 and it’s still going strong. It makes great, high-quality inkjet prints. And, it’s been very reliable.
But my new love these past few years has been the Epson EcoTank. Unlike the HP Envy which relies on ink CARTRIDGES, the Epson EcoTank series has ink TANKS - they’re easier and less expensive to fill, and the ink seems to just last SO much longer. Did you know the average ink cartridge printer owner will spend nearly as much on their first set of replacement ink cartridges as what they spent on the printer itself? But with a tank printer like an Epson EcoTank, which uses ink bottles and a tank system to print, you’ll save more money.
The other thing I love about the Epson EcoTank series is that their design allows it to be more versatile - you can use them for regular inkjet printing, which is what they are designed for. But because the Epson EcoTank does not HEAT the ink during printing the way some other inkjet printers do, this means we can get creative and use sublimation ink instead. So Epson EcoTanks can be used for either inkjet printing to make things like documents, stickers, or iron-on transfers, OR it can be used for sublimation printing to decorate things like mugs, tumblers, and shirts. It’s an either/or, not both, situation - you cannot easily switch between inkjet and sublimation in Epson EcoTank printer, but you can choose to use it for one or the other with great results.
By the way, if this mention of sublimation is new or confusing to you, just know that sublimation is a special - and very cool - process that allows you to transfer a special ink onto another surface, like a mug, tumbler or shirt. I have many videos on sublimation crafting - you can learn more about it at jennifermaker.com/sublimation for beginners
Okay, so let’s talk about Epson EcoTank printers to help you decide which one might be right for YOU, because there are a LOT of different models to choose from and I know it gets confusing. I have out here many Epson EcoTanks that we use here at the studio, and I have even more at home. The EcoTanks currently come in series - at the low end, we have the 2000 and 3000 series printers. Mid range is the 4000 series. Everything above that, like the 8000 and 15000 series, is at the large end.
So what’s the difference between all of these? There are three big things to consider: convenience, size, and price.
First, convenience. And by convenience, I’m mostly referring to whether or not the EcoTank has a front or a rear paper tray. A rear paper tray holds only 100 sheets of paper, plus it sticks out awkwardly (in my opinion) and your paper is just hanging out, exposed to light and dust and humidity. A front paper tray, on the other hand, can hold 250 sheets of paper, and it’s all neatly contained in a pull-out tray - it’s easier to access and store your paper, and also generally takes less space. I personally prefer having a front paper tray, but you will pay for that convenience, of course. The 2000 and some 3000 series EcoTanks all have a REAR paper feed. If you want a front paper tray with higher capacity, you need to move up to the a higher 3000 or 4000-series and beyond printer.
Next factor is size, specifically print size. The base model of Epson EcoTank prints up to 8.5” x 14”, so legal size paper. But some of our projects really benefit from a larger print size - and there are EcoTanks that can print up to 13” x 19”, which is a fair amount larger! The Epson EcoTank 8550 and 15000 series offers the large prints, and that’s useful for both inkjet and sublimation printing. If you think you will often do projects that require a larger print, you’ll save yourself time and headaches by just getting the larger size to start with.
Finally, price - price always matters. We only get what we can afford, right? The 2000 series is the least expensive - you can get an EcoTank 2400 or 2800 for under $200. And on the far end, the large format printers like the 8550 and the 15000, those are more like $500 and up.

Angie Holden has a video on how to schedule your printer to print while you’re away on vacation. You have to leave plain paper in the printer so that it can print every week during this time.
Wonderful!
Jennifer, thank you so much for absolutely EVERYTHING you and your staff do to bless all of your subscribers. You are the most generous crafting icon I know. I believe your astounding success is partly do to your selfless generosity. I know you have worked incredibly hard and sacrificed much (especially time spent with your family) to get to where you are today. You will continue to shine because we all believe in you as much as you believe in all of us!!
You're so kind, thank you so much! 😊🌻
Love everything you do and share. You teach with such care and Grace. Appreciate you! Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
I love my 2 ecotank 2800's. They use so little ink. One is fir sublimation and one is for regular printing and they're affordable for me. Thank you as always, Jennifer, for the video. See all at 6:00 tonight.
Thank you for this morning. My printer came yesterday and I was able to set it up today thanks to you!
I’m laid up after back surgery and am so glad for these videos! Thank you Jennifer and team for coming into my home and keeping me company as I sit in a recliner .🥰
Awe, hope you heal quickly!
You and I are crafting vicariously through others on youtube! Love having the company!
Get well soon
Thank you so much for all of your great information. I have had the ET 3160 for 2 years and LOVE it. However, I realized after watching this video that my drivers were either not installed or were out of date.... NOW I can set print quality and print Media whereas before those options did not show up. Thank you SO much! I just bought the Cricut Maker so now I will be printing and cutting up a storm...this was just in time !
Merry Christmas! Love the village.
You are so fun to listen to!! I have a heat press that is very very dusty... Working too much had caused me to neglect my love for crafting and anything art. I will be lured back by watching you. thank you!
Welcome back!
Take care....work sometimes can suck the creative juice dry and worse is when it doesn't need too. I worry about the medical people who are over worked and given little care about their human needs and care. We all need to have time for ourselves and our personal needs and personalities that refresh us and keeps us well mentally and physically both. Take care for sure.
Loving all these projects ❤ grateful too
I really wish that people in Australia could win some of the prizes. We seem to miss out, but I really love your projects. Thank you.
Thank you for posting this! I will be setting up my Epson ecotank 2720 this week and making ceramic ornaments for gifts😀
Santa couldn't bring a sublimation printer for Christmas, but my hubby said that he would buy it for my birthday in the spring!
I love the gnomes!
Thank you yo everyone on the crew/staff/boards!🙂
Thank you Jennifer for sharing this video, it has really helped me understand and has given me more confidence in what I'm trying to accomplish. Although I haven't got all of my stuff together, I'm more confident that I can do what I've always wanted to do. Thanks to the person that asked about the pre-printing of designs. I was wondering about this very subject, and you have answered it for me. Thank you again and may God bless you and your family! Happy Easter to you all!
You are so welcome! Happy Easter!
I have the 3000 series for sublimation, it works great! I’ve not had a problem yet. I also have a 4000 series for regular inkjet printing. Eco tanks are awesome.
Thanks for a great review video of the ET. I have been looking at various ET printers for the last few weeks and was not able to decide between the 2850, 3850, 4850 and 8500. And this video really helps.
The last time I brought a printer was about 3 years ago for a Brother Color Laser. It was fine printing regular documents. Not so good printing photos. Previously I had a few Epson R200 that print great photos but since I have not use it for years, the heads get clogged up and it refuse to turn on properly without Epson resetting it.
The review of the top printing is spot on. With the top loading, it rarely get any paper jam especially using specialty papers and which is what I wanted for this new printer. Especially if trying to print I know the 2850 is top loading and thought the 3850 was too until you show the paper tray. Now I need to see if the 3850 would work for my needs. Thanks.
This video really helped me out because last night I was able to setup my ET2850 in less than 20 minutes all by myself. I am going to use it just as an inkjet printer because I already have a sawgrass 500. Thanks again for all these great videos and fun projects. I look forward to this every year. 🎄😊
Is the Sawgrass worth it? It’s so expensive😮
Thank you Jenniffer for sharing your videos
It’s so informative
You are so helpful
Thanks
So many models to choose. I have a Canon ink tank and love it. If I get into sublimation, I'll have to start the shopping, comparing, pricing. After Christmas sales would be a great time.
Thank you for the clarity and easy to follow video.
So happy this takes place every year! Excited to see new projects!!
So helpful! I'm trying to decide if i should buy one. Thank you!
Beautiful village!❤
Hi Jennifer, I'm from NC and love your video
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.I LOVE the scissors you are using. Please give info on them.
Hey Jennifer so excited to watch tonight
OMG I am so glad that I found your channel. I'm ready to take the plunge with sublimation printing. I really want to try it with t-shirts but am a bit unsure because of the fabric type that you can only print on. A lot of the products that I want to print on are cotton and dark. I'm going to continue to check your channel to check out your tips and tricks. Thanks for making it easy for newbies like me. Take care!
Take a look at this tutorial as well, jennifermaker.com/how-to-sublimate-on-cotton/ ❤️
Learnt so much Jennifer, thank you ☺
Thank you so much for all you and your team do Happy New Year 2024!
so excited for the second day of countdown
Ahh Jennifer, the everything queen 👸🏻
Thank you so much for all you do for us. I really wish you lived next door for when I need you 😊 God bless ❤
Aww, thanks so much! ♥️
I’m glad I found this video because I’m trying to find which sublimation printer is better to use or start with.
Thanks so much for doing this.
Always enjoy your merry mingle. Great projects.
Paper jams happen from the ream due to excess paper dust. Fanning it clears the dust. When it goes through the printer it gets on the paper feeder rollers. Wipe it off with rubbing alcohol gets the dust off the roller and you see less jams.
Like you, I've used almost every printer available since the 80s. Last year we got a brand new Epson ET-2800 that I use as my sublimation printer. Hubs picked up a discontinued Epson Super Tank ST-2000 at auction for about $5-$10. I use that for my regular inkjet printer. I LOVE my tank Epsons!!! Tonight, he brought home a used Epson ET-2750 for himself. Got it at auction for $1.00!!! NO MORE CARTRIDGES!! Woo Hoo!!!
I've always preferred the quality of the Epsons. I used an Epson Workforce years ago to make and sell laminated bookmarks. Now I can make them even better!!!
You are getting some great deals on the printers. That's great!
Thank you for your time and lending of your genius!
It's my pleasure!
Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for this video with all the detailed information and examples you provided. You have no idea how frustrated I was with my Epson printer for not having the correct settings, and all along it was me that never installed its driver 😬😅
Glad it was helpful!
Hello everyone. Jennifer, I love the videos.
These will make some fun gift ideas
Hello from Waterford, Michigan ❤
I'm one of the ones who bought one and still haven't set it up. Hoping to do it this week for mugs.
I have th eEpson ET2800 - it works great
Couldn't make live today...thanks for replay option!
I see it! I was looking for yellow
I’m watching your replay and am glad for this reviews. I’ve been debating for months because I want to try sublimation.
Sublimation is way better than vinyl, that's why I tried it. I debated too and glad I went for it.
@@lindabradford9591sublimation isn’t always possible and you’re limited to what sublimation blanks are available. And I’m not sure I like the feeling of sublimation T-shirt’s compared to 100% cotton ones. Vinyl is still what I will mostly use except for mugs and tumblers.
Great video very informative
These are so cute.
Good Morning! Thank you for being you and for always being solo helpful and sharing your knowledge. What is the advantage to having the printer that has 6 colors versus 4?
Very informational. Watched the live.
missed the live been sick so not making anything.....but enjoy watching love your creativity and generous spirit
Hope you feel better soon!
thank you for all the tips and the video
My pleasure! 😊🌻
I love seeing what you do and make!! Thank you. I would like to know your opinion on the Sawgrass printers?? I have my eyes on one that i really want to purchase. If you could please share your opinion, i would appreciate it very much
Looks like the 3850 also has a front papertray. And thanks for the review. I was specifically looking for the front/back paper tray information
Glad I could help
Hi, from Canada!
What about print quality? In corps of there is a difference in the models and how pretty the colors look. Thank you for ask you do. I have learned so much from you.
Hi from Maryland!
I always run into the issues with the Eco Tanks , Lines through my images, yes I clean heads and etc. Another issue is if you don't run these at least once a week then the ink will dry up and then you may as well throw the unit away.
I have an Epson ECOTANK 2803 for sublimation, and I love it. I never turn it off, and I print every week.
A friend turned hers off and didn’t print every week, and when she got ready to print some transfer, she discovered that it was clogged. So I print for her. She has tried several things to get it going again, but nothing worked.
Printers should be used in color 1o 2 times a week or they might clog. She should look for cleaning kits if she hasn't already..
Would that happen if I use the regular ink it comes with 😭
Appreciate you!!
Hello from Houston TX
Me too
U look cute when u give little smile makes me smile too
Hey beautiful video I wish I saw your video before I did my subliminal for my 2800 they blocked my printer and I only had it for 5 days now I have to send it back and get another great thing I was in the 30 day warranty LESSON LEARNED
Sorry to hear that
Hi Jennifer, how do I switch from ink jet to sublimation ink? And what ecotank Epson series are you using? Thank you.
i just recently bought the epson ecotank 2800
How is it going hun?
Thank you for this video! I am kind of interested in trying sublimation but everyone who mentions converting an EcoTank (that I've heard, anyway) talks about how you need to be sure to buy a "converter kit". That sounded intimidating to me. Not the idea of converting, necessarily, but that apparently it was a specialized enough process to require a "kit". Why on earth didn't those other people just say that you just need to buy a new printer and fill it with sublimation ink instead of the ink it comes with? I was picturing having to do minor surgery and installing something technical inside, lol.
That's too bad they misled you. I have the ecotank 2800 and I just put the sublimation ink instead of the regular. Yes it's very simple.
You may need a kit if you used regular ink in your printer first and need to flush the lines, but you don't need that in order to fill the tanks with sublimation ink. 😊🌻
Do the Epson 2000 & 3000 printers print on envelopes? Like A2 or #10 envelopes? I like to do envelopes, especially at the holidays. I also definitely want to print on card stock. Glad I found this video since I’m looking for a printer right now.
Hello from Puerto Rico
Working on Sashiko napkins, and planning to make some Christmas cards later. Happy Christmas month everybody!
What are Shashiko Napkins? I tried to google. Google didn't know.
@@annaviolette8504 Sashiko is a Japanese craft, a form of embroidery.
love the gnomes
What is the best EcoTank for beginners but still print good. Like what is the difference in prints from the 4760 to the 2803 to the 4850? I'm trying to purchase one based off of your videos. I'm just curious on what the actual difference is with color/printing/etc for Sublimation between the three
Love it
You are AMAZING!!!
Thank you!
Ecotank 3830 has a front loading tray. Perhaps you should open the box.
Thank you
Paper trays, fax and auto feeders are really a big deal to me I do use them. I am considering an Epson Eco tank for my next printer.
Wonderful!
Thank you for the video. Does this printer handle card stock thickness?
Yes 😊🌻
Jennifer, thank you for this video. I have my et 2760 printer set up for sublimation. But If you can, please tell me your overall favorite of these printers for Crafting. Especially printing on 100lb card stock. I am thinking to get the et 3830 but is there a better choice?
That's a good choice.
Hi Jennifer, This is a great video thank You for making it. I want to know if you have a video for unclogging and ecotank 2800. Also while setting up another brand new Epson 2800 I printed a test page and it was blank. I tried everything to get some ink. Do you think it is clogged?
I do not have a video for that. You can ask in the group. facebook.com/groups/sublimationmadeeasy
Thank you for all ur info now iknow what to buy God bless you 🙏🩷
Thank you!
watching replay
I have an ET-3760 that has a front loading paper draw. I think most in the 3000 series do have front loading paper draws.
Nice!
Thank you for this! Any of these printers support paper roll printing, for banner/endless printing? Or do you know of any inkjet printers suitable for sublimation printing, that can do 2-3 meter long prints?
I am not sure.
Hi, Thank you so much for your videos! ❤ I'd like to know if EPSON L300 can also be used for sublimation? If yes, is it possible to change the Ecotank from regular Ink to a sublimation Ink?
Yes. You can search for videos on how people have changed an EcoTank to sublimation. We have not done that. Remember that it does void the warranty when you convert an EcoTank printer to sublimation.
Jennifer I love your videos. Not sure if you can help, but can I use DTF ink instead of sublimation ink and have a DTF printer?
Here is a helpful tutorial. jennifermaker.com/dtf-t-shirt-printing-on-cotton-sublimation/
Hi Jennifer, I’ve been searching your content but not finding if you have any recommendation for one of these printers for tackling printing on cardstock. I’m particularly trying to find out which one best prints on up to 110lb cardstock such as the Recollections brand. I’ve been leaning towards the ET 8500 but really wondering do I need that much printer and if another model will do the same job with up to 110lb.
I have not tested printers for that. The Epson EcoTank can print on card stock and other media up to 1.3 mm thick.
Would this be the same process to convert to a DTF printer?
Oh Jennifer the more I look at videos now the more confused I am getting. I make earrings with sayings on them and I want to start back putting pictures on them using a product called Kraft Tex. Because my sayings of which I have more than 100, I have used an Epson monochromatic printer, so now it looks as if I will need two printers. What I want to know is can the Epson 2000 and 3000 print on Kraft Tex. Kraft Tex is a tough paper that is washable, sewable, paintable and can also go through the embossing and die cutting process very successfully. Thank you for the informative video.
That is not something that I have tested. Doing a google search I see that you can use it with ink jet printers. There are lot of tutorials out there to help you research that.
Hi Jennifer, do you have a video talking about DTF printing?
Yes I do, jennifermaker.com/dtf-t-shirt-printing-on-cotton-sublimation/
Hi Jennifer ❤
Excellent instruction. Please: I need guidance on which EcoTank model to purchase to be able to print on cardstock for papercrafts. I'd be using it for Cricut print and cut projects where I want thicker paper than my current printer can handle. Thank you for any advice.
Ecotanks are good with printing up to 68# cardstock 🥰
Thank you-@@JenniferMaker
Jennifer is there another seller for the ink other than Amazon? About how much does a set of ink cost. Loved this video. I need a new printer
You can go directly to Hiipoo's site or even from Walmart or where sublimations printers are sold locally.
I have an epson but it has regular ink in it how can I take that ink out and put in the infusable ink without buying another printer ?
what type of camaras do u use to make your videos
What printer do you recommend for cardstock especially printing on 110lb. I have hp inkjet 4650 all in 1 and I keep experiencing paper jams
That is a hard one to find a good answer to. You can ask in the group to see who has had success with this. facebook.com/groups/sublimationmadeeasy
I am researching the Epson Eco Tanks and it does say that the ET-3830 does have a front loading paper tray.
Good to know!
Hi, I plan on creating sublimation mugs soon and eventually going into shirts. I am planning to get an Epson 8500 Series. can you recommend a good mug heat press, or should I just use an oven? Can the Cricut cutter also cut the sublimation paper into the specific design printed on it?
Yes it can! You can use either one. It depends on what all you may want to do in the decision that you make. Here is the affiliate link to our favorite finds. www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-c673d212
Can you convert an HP ecotank printer? Is it just ép on?
Looking at a new printer. Need the fax and also a memory card slot. The 4850 has fax but no memory card slot. My old Xp 850 did it all. No longer can find
