Calvino's Invisible Cities captures absent desire with deep longing. Calvino's best book.

If you liked Glutton you might like Perfume by Patrick Suskind. Twisted, warped, weird protagonist who you still somehow root for.

I definitely recommend Lullaby or Diary by Palahnuik but Invisible Monsters (or his "Remix" version) is where it's at. Also, I just started The Shards and it's amazing to be back in Ellis's lurid 80's L.A. world after years since Imperial Bedrooms.

I agree that NYRBs are so buttery and deluxe feeling… I call them the Criterion Collection of books. Also I really love that they strive to bring back books that have gone out of print or books that have never before been translated into English. I just read one called “My Death” by Lisa Tuttle, and it was so weird and good and under 100 pages I think. Also, if you like charming or funny books, another good one is Too Loud A Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal. Oh, one more weird NYRB! Notes of a Crocodile by Qiu Miaojin! Love your videos!

"he was always seeking love and shelter and comfort from people or from places and he finally reached the point at the end of this where he could never have those things and he finally realized he would never be able to be happy."
"if i just submerge myself in all of this media that i love, and surround myself with adults that treat me as an adult then i basically skip childhood and i don't need family and i don't need anybody."
i think you summarize emotional themes so wonderfully, and here it becomes unavoidably clear to me that being an adult doesn't mean an absence of dependence-a double negative (now triple if you include my "doesn't). i think a concept that would work better might be autonomy, meaning self-understanding and self-nagivation both internally and within social space-which i feel also connects with your takeaway from the end of lucky jim.
i also hope february is a good a month as january, and it's lovely sharing this journey with you as always! 🥰✨

I own Motherless Brookyln but I'm yet to read. the NYRB style is so cool, I own one I got from the US. final note but I adore Fight Club. Palahniuk is a great writer, and I remember reading him because of my love of Bret Easton Ellis. the second half of Glamorama feels like a Palahniuk book.

You have already declared "The Glutton" the best of the year, who needs the other 11 months?! 😆😸 But I know what you mean I reacted that way to Murata's "Earthlings" myself. "The Glutton" will go on my list, if I had not seen your review the cover alone would have put it there. It seems you are finding about Calvino the same things that I did, though you are somewhat agreeable towards them while I am not! You seem to say that you love reading even books you might not like, which sounds like someone passionate about literature if I've ever heard one

Like this one from Nabokov, I think you generally pick good books. Calvino has much better work than this one you read. Try Baron on The Tree. Don't know how this one was translated. If it is at all.
