  • Andrew Fagan is a kiwi musician.
In the 1980’s he was the singer of one of New Zealand’s most popular bands called The Mockers. Chances are, if you know any of their songs it’ll be Forever Tuesday Morning (absolute banger!!)
But for a 12-year-old Dom Harvey. He knew every word of every song.
Obsessed is a big word…but that was my relationship with this band called the Mockers. I was a psycho-fan…and I would be prepared fight anyone who dared to disagree they were the best band in the world LOL.
So, to sit down for a long conversation with one of my childhood heroes was something truly special. This is by far the most unique and bizarre podcast I’ve ever done- Andrew turned up with his own props including a flag, a stool, a bell, a water spray bottle, guitar and amp.
We talk about his life in music, including those years in The Mockers- his recollections of the infamous 1984 Queen Street Riots and the deep impact of losing a bandmate to suicide.
We also discuss in great length his love of solo voyages in the open ocean in small boats.
Then we go deep with some musings on life, aging, mental health and future goals.
Whether you're a long-time fan of The Mockers or new to wonderful world and mind of Andrew Fagan, this episode offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable New Zealander.

I too am a massive Mockers and Andrew Fagan fan - have a few albums and on regular rotation on Spotify - listening to Mockers music brings me great joy and magic memories. Andrew is unapologetically himself - open and honest, delightfully cheeky, ridiculously talented, bold and unafraid, and always the consummate showman. Great interview Dom - am sure there is scope for a part 2!

No Dom, you were not NZ's #1 fan because that would be me! I'm still nuts about Mr Fagan and his music!!! I still have all the albums on original cassettes as well as all of the cds and have a dozen hand written letters from Andrew from when we were penpals back in the 80's which are among my most prized possessions! I have an album on my Facebook page dedicated to Andrew and The Mockers. I have his poetry books, his 2 books about his sailing adventures which I absolutely love (I believe they are hard to come by these days), he also has a children's book (he personally gave me a copy). Andrew is awesome! Thanks so much for having him on your podcast! By the way, I'm still wearing black nail polish too only because Andrew did and I happen to be wearing it right now. :) Destiny is one of my all-time fave Mockers songs too Dom.

I've seen The Mockers many times, the last time was in Titirangi original little theatre where Andrew had a fan and spray bottle and boat prop. It's his safe spot....replicates being on the water! Some people tune into their spiritual side, numb themselves with drugs, narcotics etc, scream & shout, shake it off, run, see a councilor etc so if you don't have a strategy mental health will decline. I enjoy listening to old muso's who have matured and have some life experience to share. ❤

I let the Mockers’ music come and go, liked some of it casually via radio play, but wasn’t an actual fan. One of the things I remember about Fagan was him slightly drunk on live NY’s Eve TVNZ tele doing a gentle somersault onto a sofa as Karen Hay tried to interview him. I thought at the time how disrespectful to her it was, and childish. But clearly she was okay with it, and I misjudged Fagan because what a resourceful and talented and organised brave bloke he’s turned out to be. Anyone who can save money for years, plan in detail a solo sailing venture, renovate/rebuild a boat, has to be taken seriously.
    Respect 👍

Saw Mockers at Gladstone christchuch and he was wearing the pink fluffy outfit and that was a long time ago and when they were starting. Its great these bands can still play to decent crowds. This was wonderful to hear the life of someone whose music ive been listening to most of my life.

Was there for the concert at Aotea Square, I don't; recall the Mockers which is a bummer as I loved them back then. I guess the overwhelming memory is Dave Dobbyn stirring up the drunken minroity crowd and then all the bottles crashing down around us smashing in the Square. REALLY frightening.
Also loved Andrew on Kiwi Fm with Karen Hay, LOVED that radio show.

1:25:55 Fagan has a great profound outlook on mental health...."it's absolutely normal to be unhappy at times" "melancholic is a normal human emotion" well said my man. Seems like a cool dude 😎 just like his wife Karyn Hay (not sure if they're still together) 🤔
