This video breaks down the franchise chronologically, charting the story of Kratos from a hot headed youth, through to a captain in the Spartan army all before his grand odyssey through the Greek and Norse mythologies.
With God of War Ragnarök set to further slide the franchise’s anti-hero, Kratos, into a mythological mire, what better time to dive back into the Ghost of Sparta’s saga of gods and monsters.

The mashing O quick time event/skill check at 8:00 is usually used when Kratos has to use all his strength to lift a heavy door, push over a pillar or overpower an enemy. So in a way, you could interpret Kratos turning his back on his daughter being as difficult for him as lifting several ton statues

Imagine not understanding that having pushing Calliope away as a QTE is to get across to the player that it is just as difficult, if not more so, to Kratos as literally ripping a God's head from their shoulders

7:55 to 8:06 to clarify Kratos did not want to leave her at all. It's all he's ever wanted was to be with his family after his mistake of killing them on accidient.. If he didn't stop Persephone it would have meant the end of the world but more importantly the end of his daughters soul because elysium would have fallen too. He had to forsake her and become the monster he once was by killing some innocent souls in elysium in order to be strong enough to defeat persephone. Idk why people never seem to get that in videos.
Aldo persephone didn't want power in Olympus. She literally wanted to cease existing but bring Olympus down with her.
More corrections.
-Kratos CHOSE to serve the God's in hope of them getting rid of his nightmares of his terrible deeds (killing his family and others) which he got after killing orkos. It's an import thing to mention because it's literally his sole motivation in God of War and God of War Chains of Olympus.
-In the begining of God of War 2 we learn it was actually Zeus the stripped Kratos of SOME of his Godly power and gives it to the Colussus of Rhodes. And Kratos DOES accept Zeus "gift" of the blade but it was a trick. He wanted Kratos to put all of his Godly power into the sword making him mortal but making the sword string enough to defeat the statue and to collect the rest of his power back from the statue. Zeus kills him because he is threatened by Kratos and is insulted when Kratos refused to serve him again.

Baldur dies at the end of the game - just seems that if he is going to cross Baldur off the list, might as well keep include Modi and Magni since they do not appear in Ragnarok.

*Spoilers for GoW 2018 - not that it matters if you watched this video* I'm sure someone else has already pointed this out, but Magni and Modi (Thor's sons) are gods who were picked off during the 2018 game. Was there a reason not to cross them off the board?

When I played the first GOW and I saw Ares yeeting that pilar across the planet and killing Kratos it really made him feel unstoppable and GodLike. I was like “ain’t nobody killing no god” 😂🤣 little did I know how wrong I was.
Kratos cant die becouse death can have him only when it earns him :D Also Zeus in GoW2 didnt give him the sword to help him but to trick him. The sword drained all of Kratos godly powers so Zeus could give him choice: die or serve.
I forgot about that so how is he still a god now in the newer version?
@@TheMoises1213 becouse he is his son. The sword probably only drained him from the powers he gets from opening pandoras box. But be learning Zeus is his father he probably awaken his powers maybe.
@@blackwidow7804 He just lost all his powers and magic. His strength, durability, speed, ability to live for centuries all comes from having Zeus's blood. Besides he also became a full god after killing Ares. I suppose that never leaves you.
I like the quick time event with Kratos and his daughter. It shows that leaving his daughter behind was as difficult for him as killing a Minotaur (which uses the same qte)

8:00 - You left out that Elysium would be destroyed too so he had to leave her to save her. It's a pretty important fact that I see most skip for some reason. She was not trying to "seize power in Olympus" she was trying to destroy the world and that would include Elysium and his daughter.

You got a lot of stuff wrong in this video, others have pointed a lot of that stuff out. It really bums me out how people think old Kratos is a shallow character with only bloodlust as a trait... People act like the GoW 2018 Kratos is a new take, a improved character but the truth is he's always been a deep and complicated character. The QTE with his daughter represents how difficult it is to push his daughter away so he can go stop the destruction of Elysium and save his daughters soul. Another correction I'd like to add is that the new GoW games are set in the same universe, different planet essentially. After GoW3 Kratos' home world is completely wrecked. He wanders the earth for 100+ years before being dragged from his home realm to the realm of Midgard by the wolves Skol and Hati. The devs explained the GoW universe as each mythology/pantheon of gods is in its own star system/galaxy all occupying the same universe. So every myth and creation story is real in GoW and separated by space.

it wasn't for the good of the world. it was to save his daughter's life in elysium since if the world is destroyed, she perishes as well. if literally abandons his mission and the world if it meant he could be with calliope. he didn't save the world because it was the right and moral thing to do.

Zeus himself strips Kratos of his initial powers under the guise of Athena's owl. Then tricks him into draining the rest of his power into the blade of Olympus. Basically just a long winded way of making the player weak again

I still recommend getting God of War: Saga, or God of War: Collection/Origins & God of War: Ascension. As there was a lot of details left out. Though as a long story short, this was a great video.

Surely you didn’t put betrayal chronologically after Ghost of Sparta. ghost of Sparta literally ends with him donning the armour he has at the beginning of 2, which he doesn’t have throughout betrayal. He also has the blade of Artemis in betrayal, whilst not in Ghost of Sparta.
While true, Betrayal's narrative really only fits between Ghost of Sparta and God of War II. In Ghost of Sparta, he wasn't just an angry god taking out his anger against the other gods by rampaging through Greece. The end of Ghost of Sparta sets that up, and then in Betrayal, we see him rampaging through Greece with his Spartan army and the end of Betrayal foreshadows that Zeus would soon take action against Kratos, which then happens at the beginning of God of War II after Kratos and the Spartans rampage through Rhodes. Also, Ghost of Sparta takes place very shortly after God of War I.
Honestly, it would just be easier if Santa Monica could just come right out and say that Betrayal is not canon anymore.
And to note, he technically shouldn't have the Blade of Artemis after God of War I anyways because Ares stripped him of all of his weapons and magic during their fight.

I think this video over-summarizes a lot of the OG trilogy. Maybe good for people already familiar with the story just trying to catch up, but not really good for people looking to get a good understanding of the story.

GoW: Ascencion used the max hardware capacity of PS3. The graphics were way better than the ones from GoW3, but the story was too predictible and very short. It was GoW1 prequel game, basically. I would not to buy GoW 2018 if i knew it was a prequel game aswell. A lot of people did the same with the 'GoW: Ascencion' game.

I had a friend who never played through a single God of War game, but somehow got super hooked on God of War: Ascension multiplayer for months. So much so he literally became the top player and was well recognized in the online community. Shadowflame lol, Im a huge God of War fan, yet he had me saying "dude when are you gonna play a different game?" Lol

How can you not understand? Kratos is SAVING Calliope when he leaves her! Persephone wants to destroy the whole world! Kratos could stay and perish with his daughter. But he loves her and wants her to survive in Elysium.... And he wants to save the rest of the world. He doesn't just leave her to continue killing! You have made tons of new fans not understand this really important point. The QTE is to drive home how difficult and heartbreaking it is for this father. Original Kratos is already unfairly maligned as a one dimensional psychopath by those who know nothing of him. ..
