(part 2) I sense that most of the original works for drum corps simply can't hold a candle to the quality and depth of expression a great work brings, assuming it is arranged well (like here, for instance!). A drop-dead gorgeous moment like this is so dependant on the genius of Samuel Barber, who was on a completely different plane than even a top-grade brass arranger.
This is what Drum Corps is all about!!!! What a beautifully haunting sound! Thank you for posting this. Words cannot express....thank you for making me cry.
I had the privilege of hearing this played right in front of me in 2000 in Texas outside of the Alamo Dome. We (Southwind) played our ballad from that year (Legends of the Falls) for SCV, then SCV played Adagio and Send in the Clowns for us. It was the most amazing thing I have ever heard.
Thank you for posting this. 2000 was my favorite year for DCI hands down. Scv, Cavs, devils, cadets. I loved those 4 shows so much and about wore those vhs tapes out lol. Special year that was🤧
I love, for me at least, that you don't even realize this amazingly slow crescendo and push into triple forte... and you don't even realize how darn loud it is until the climatic cut off... and even through a not so great quality UA-cam video the chord still rings in your ears after the cut off... eerie and spine chilling.
(part 3) It is nearly impossible for a staff writer at a drum corps to produce musical material of this depth, and once we've heard Samuel Barber, it's hard to get us back on the farm.
(part 1) Breathtaking, and it provokes a thought: as much as I love the idea of drum corps hiring their own composers to create something original, the problem is they're up against Samuel Barber, John Adams, Shostakovich & Co., musically speaking.
it takes genius to take something called adagio for STRINGS and do it with brass... I don't wanna admit to damp eyes... but yeah... I heard them do that in one of there shows that year. It was incredible then and it's so nice to hear it again... the chord progressions at 2 minutes in... jeez...
for the first time, in a while, i had to lower the volume on my computer down b/c the sound was so intense, i thought my speakers would burst, and honestly, i thought i would too........
@andy9ajc9 haha, that is where we stayed! oh, I'm way too old to still be marching, but I did march SCV cyms 01,02, and now I'm the cymbal tech at Legends
The Cavaliers have come up against this the past few years, I feel. Their shows have been, of course, dynamite, and they've been winning, but there's a richness in the music that's missing since they abandoned great composers to focus on in-house composition. The music has grown kind of one-dimensional, like something written on a keyboard. Thoughts?
I’d be willing to say that this is the best fielding of Adagio for Strings ever - including marching band as well. Just absolutely stunning.

so incredible...
I would love to see that resurface again in a future show!
we're doing it

this show on top of 97.98.99 cemented me marching in 01. One of the best (and hardest!) Vanguard shows ever in my book.
this is what made me love drum corps, as well as SCV
lovely jus lovely its an honor playin this!!!
2:16 was an amazing clean cut off. I love DCI.

2000 they did that show! My friend Mike marched contra that year
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings will be played at my funeral. Period. End of story.
It’s very hard to describe being in Blue Knights and hearing this from a mile away and trying to rehearse properly all summer.
I bet! BK fielded a badass drum corps that year too. one of our best corps ever.
Still gives me chills. Awesome.
Almost as if it was written with SCV hornline in mind. Beautiful!
My highschool did in 2014 as their ballad. Exact same. If want to check it out its Harlingen South High School 2014
Dammit Rey
Do you have an arrangement?
(part 1)

I got tears in my eyes
Samuel Barber + Santa Clara Vanguard = perfection.
I saw this live at finals. It was pretty special

That would be the most intense funeral ever. Especially if it was a live performance of SCV. Lol, awesome.
Wow....still gives me bumps to this day!!!!! What happened to the years after?
Goosebumps.
i got chills for days now :)
amazing.
simply amazing.
That... was... awesome!
@andy9ajc9 Why would they ever want to get away from a sound like this? I just don't get the move to Bb horns, sorry.
for the first time, in a while, i had to lower the volume on my computer down b/c the sound was so intense, i thought my speakers would burst, and honestly, i thought i would too........

Flawless
goosebumps.
all I have to say is...WHOOOOOO!!!
@peepers12 Was 2000 show. Age of Reverence
SCV played this beautifully, but I wish a quality recording of the best version was around.
Congrats anyway.
@andy9ajc9 Yeah, that's what I said too every time I saw them that year! Awesome piece to begin with, made better by brass! ;-)
Let's put it this way; they played a similar enough arrangement to have to pay the SCV arranger (I think it was Key Poulan) or he could've sued them.
Love it, love it, love it!
I just wished that the conductor wouldn't keep bending his knees, it threw him off that year.
I aged out in '01.
i know this was in Rome, NY, but do you remember where the rehearsal site was, I think we stayed at that same place this past summer
so tiesto got this from them ,or is this known by everyone?
You got a recording of it? Wanna hook me upp =]?
@BariBango ditto
What year was this?? I just crapped my pants
omg
unbe-fucking-lievable....
you didn't play that arrangement unless you marched only brass.
LOVE this! SCV rocks. Always has. Always will.
But.....the guard work and choreography for this piece makes no sense! Like S. Barber on crack! lol
@peepers12 2000
