    Hi Miquel, I just saw your video on Irish Moss. After i wash mines for several times to removed all the salt and whatever msy be on it, I then soaked it in some fresh lukewarm water and let it soaked overnight, and it becomes so soft. Then I blend it a few seconds, and it so gelatinous, I keep it in the fridge and use about two tbps in my smoothies. Or more for desserts, soup, etc. This is raw vegan/ vegetarian way. I find that when it is soaked in warm/hot it's brakes down better, and it'ready to use in your recipes. Have a great day!!

    my dad makes it a bit different ...wash the moss and soak linseed ...and soak moss...then simmer NOT BOIL... the moss with linseed and isinglass until the moss dissolve.....then filter out all linseed and let it cool...when it cool is like a thin jelly....which you make your drink from....you can use rum and condensed milk or coconut and honey ...nutmeg etc...whatever you like...but preparation is slightly different ..but yours still looks good.

      depending on the irish moss I wash the moss and then let it soak for almost 24 hours to get back the volume then i boil it with the Flaxseed (linseed) insinglass and arabic gum. Flaxseeds are actually good for you. I don't throw mine away. I then let it cool down until it form a Jelly and then blend it with things i like. (condensed milk, nutmeg and other spices)

      Wash off salt under fresh running water, allow it to dry for less than a week, once the is sun hot. When Irish moss gets stiff, it ready. To prepare it rinse again, soak, and then follow this recipe to make drink. I called my fisherman friend, and that is what he told me.

    • @JamaicanFoodRecipes
      @JamaicanFoodRecipes  8 років тому

      +pookiroo Usually irish moss, is white cream like ocean sand. It stays like that for long. Therefore blue grey green specks sound like it is not good. NO you did not see those things on mines. I actually still have some from that same day, and It looks the same even to day. I went and check. I am looking at it now. Maybe different regions have other types!!

      +hj B Hi MiQuel, thank you for this vid. Carrageenan and Irish Moss are absolutely not the same thing. Carrageenan is a man made substance which is chemically extracted from Irish Moss or synthetically produced. It is the man made carrageenan that the food industry widely uses as a thickening agent in all kinds of food that has been linked to harmful effects in humans. Extracted or chemically synthesized carrageenan is potentially dangerous. Natural Irish Moss, however, has no known deleterious effects on humans and is considered a beneficial superfood. I was also wondering if there was a reason you left out Isinglass.

    Why do Jamaicans say Irish mash, isn’t it Irish moss?

    • @JamaicanFoodRecipes
      @JamaicanFoodRecipes  6 років тому +8

      Let me explain our language to you. Jamaicans whom are intelligent talks properly in professional settings. However, when sporting or socializing some will talk bad (which I called broken-English), like to say mash insight moss, Panish Town insight Spanish Town. etc. Get it!. On the other hand, Jamaicans whom dropped out of school, do not know better really. That's why lots of Jamaicans talks bad and broken English. (Which I believed became patois/patwa over time.) If anyone else can add to my opinion, I welcome your views.
