As trains go, the Northern at Selby is as Hubnut as trains get, one of only 7 remaining Class 155, built by Leyland Bus at the National plant in Lillyhall

I'd love to see you keep this for 3 months, do an adventure or so in it then "upgrade" to something that a 106 owner back in the day might have looked towards. Say a series where you keep a car for 3 months then sell it for something 3 years newer than the last that could be called an "upgrade" as if someone was moving through their car ownership journey.

My daughters 1st car owned for 9 yrs pug 206 1.1. Would pull from 30 in 5th, lovely reliable engine 60bhp but geared beautifully for uk driving. Did 45 mpg doing anything. No rust. Only drama was new torsion bar. Very easy to work on. Daughter went to Cornwall, scotland, Belgium and holland. Sold at 120k still running a peach. Body work paint wise was gorgeous. I had great respect for that little car, same mechanicals as this. Very enjoyable drive enthusiastically too. Much more reliable and less rust than minis too

I once owned a Peugeot 106 Independence 1.1 also on a Y reg. For the brief time I owned it (around 6 months before it eneded up being scrapped) it was an enjoyable car to drive. Mine was poverty spec with keep fit windows and no sunroof

I have fond memories of my 2001 106 1.1 Independence as my first car - loved it.. although I realised it actually felt somewhat prehistoric when I moved to a '05 Kia Picanto I replaced it with.. the 106 was a basic honest motor.

Interesting choice for someone not a fan of Saxos as the are essentially the same animal. They aren’t a bad drive to be fair. I’ll be peddling mine from the top end of North Yorkshire to Llandudno in a few weeks. I tend to back road it via the Colne valley across to the M6. Comfy seats and supple suspension help. Can reflect your comments fuel wise. Quite a few small independents around me cheaper than the supermarkets. Definition of confusion…… Father’s Day in Barnsley 😁. Happy trails 👍

Hi Ian, great video, the Peugeot 106 are vey good little cars, I had saxo vtr from bran new in blue metallic back in 2000, only had it 3 years as couldnt afford the final payment, that was the tu 1.6 engine, very quick in a small car, drove a 1.1 saxo a mate of mine used to have back in the day and it wasnt slow by any means very nippy around town, just the revs on the motorway was on the high side at 70mph but other than that no problems, I can see the 106 will be a keeper lol, we'll see in future videos, keep em comming always enjoy your content

I had a friend who had one of these as his first car, it's safer than you'd think.
He rolled it onto a grassy verge after hitting a patch of ice. Miraculously, it landed on all four wheels, pointing in the right direction, so he carried on driving without even getting out to inspect the damage! He was late for a job interview you see, and 18 years old... All he really lost that day was a wing mirror, the sunroof wasn't even cracked.
Anyway, he went on to skid it off a 10 meter cliff a few months later and that was the end of the 106. He was perfectly fine, I still don't know how he got away with any of that.

This was the period when Peugeot were on their game with simple, fun little cars. The 1.1 was surprisingly nippy and would hit 102mph. From memory them and Citroen did very good insurance deals for young drivers. The 106 had a slightly higher mounted steering wheel than the Saxo making it more comfy too.
Funny you mentioned people binging them. My friend binned his first and then his second. Both ended up upside down.

The first train is a Class 155, based on the Leyland National bodyshell. The window spacing and knobbly rivets give it away externally. Inside the ceiling panels are straight out of the bus. Some of them have 'Leyland' in swoopy lettering on internal panels near the doors. Each carriage has its own Cummins NT855-R5 turbo-diesel engine, developing 285bhp, so power to weight ratio is pretty good. Hydraulic transmission - the engines need to be revved hard to get the oil moving in order to move off from rest.
The two-car 155s are quite rare: most of them were split into two single-car units, the Class 153. Transport for Wales, which has made some frankly daft decisions which have left it short of rolling stock, uses 153s on long distance work such as Holyhead-Cardiff. It's a tribute to the trains that they can handle that kind of workload, which they were never designed for. On a fast stretch of line such as Shrewsbury - Hereford, they really fly.
    I'll get my trainspotter's anorak.

Ian, your drive took me down all sorts of roads that I have known myself, e.g. A628 (Woodhead Road), M57, M60 (Manchester Bypass), A483 / A5 round Oswestry. I know the Welshpool area well. You did well to manage to get on a Trans Pennine Express train - a feat in itself, considering that they don't run 40 % of their advertised timetable; they have sneaky ways like pre-cancellations so that they can massage the figures down to 25 %. And you were doing even better to get a Northern Snail connection from Leeds to Barnsley. As for the car, a cracking little number there. 😀

Had a Saxo and it was fun to drive if you like bendy roads. The gearchange was designed by the Eric Morecombe Design Studio as it had all the gears but not always where you expected them. I must agree about the pedal arrangement and i had the seat so far back it was really a 3 seater. Most were fitted with snazzy alloys and powerful stereos by young men whose ambition regularly exceeded their ability. Hence a ready supply of spares at the local breakers. Good keeper for a future classic as so many people have a connection.

Screnwasher pumps are polarity sensitive; the pump works in either direction, with two outlets. Two wires, if connected the wrong way round they squirt the opposite screen to that expected. I had to replace a leaking pump on my MK1 Focus. Aftermarket pump, obviously. Connected up, it worked the wrong way. The layout and length of the pipes stopped me simply swapping them over. Snipped the wires and reconnected reversed, worked correctly. Alternatively, the pipes are connected to the wrong outlets...

To sharpen up that gear shift, fit some new metal linkages and a new “golf ball” mechanism as I call it. Maybe a new roll pin in the gearbox arm too, all of about 20p to change. Plenty of easy cost effective stuff to improve on these

I owned a 106 Independence with a 1.1 litre engine between October 2017 and April 2018. I found it to be rather nippy and fun to drive, but also spent nearly £800 on repairs in the first month of ownership, including timing belt and water pump, and sorting out catastrophic brake failure due to the previous owner doing a bodge repair to get it through a somewhat dodgy MOT. Surprisingly good driving up hills. The pedal layout is what let it down though

Big fan of the Tu engine although I've never known such a huge jump in performance between the 1.1 and the 1.4 (in 206) but it's a smooth and tough little engine, very efficient. I briefly had a 106 in that colour as a 1.5d, it was a pleasant little plodder but was never quite as comfortable as I wanted it to be. My girlfriend back in the olden days had a saxo 1.1 and the power steering really pulled the engine down haha. For £550 that looks like a good honest little car. Assuming the linkage setup is the same as the 206, then your baggy gear shift will likely be the nylon bushing on the gear lever end of the linkage. Its a very cheap and easy part to replace.
About a year ago I bought a cheap 206 XSi (1.6 16v TU engine) which was supposed to be a temporary run around. I ended up keeping it as the fuel economy is great, engine has a decent amount of poke and the handling is a lot more fun than I expected. It's still going strong today.

Please keep it (and do more videos of it). I have a 106 1.1. I sold one 106 and shortly after that bought another one because I realized it is so good. The car feels alive and very comfortable in the 50-90 km/h range. I look forward to driving it long distance, whenever I have a reason to. The suspension is not that well insulated (compared to modern vehicles) but the spring rates are low and the 'natural frequency' of the suspension is lower which makes it relaxing to drive in a way. And in a surprising way it is still very responsive to inputs. It just beats modern cars with engaging driving and the feeling of speed while staying within the speed limits.

This is absolute peak Hubnut, a mundane journey but made compellingly watchable with your commentary.
Your journey home is all our journey's home, traffic, wrong turns, road closures, and of course a disappointing McDonalds.
Love that 106 too, but a basic mk1 Graduate would be the stuff of dreams.

Oh, wow - that was a proper cool and fun car! And I completely understand the level of fun you experienced - my brothers 206 is just like that, only somewhat bigger. (It also got that weird box in the boot.) And my Modus has just a 1,2 liter engine and still manages to be a rally car in disguise... Now, let's see if this really isn't a keeper after all 😅

My first car was a Saxo with this engine and it was immense fun. Much nippier and agile than the equivalent Fiestas etc of that era. Would be interested to take this on when you’re done with it, that is if you don’t hang on to it judging by the video!

Love those little cars and I'm a big fan of the 8 valve TU engines. Very easy to maintain and repair and quite nippy. Just scrapped my Saxo because of rust but the engine was running like a dream. Too bad there isn't a 2 litre TU. Would be great for towing.

It is amazing some of the low mileage good condition vehicles you can buy in the UK for little more than pocket money.
Anything available for that price in the United States would usually have significant rust and 200k plus miles and probably wouldn't make it out of the parking lot under its own power.

Sad thing is the government is trying to ban these sorts of cars with green air zones so anything pre 2000 will most likely end up getting scrapped unless it’s sold to someone outside of the city

@Retired Bore American vehicles haven't been "TANK SIZED" for decades.
Except for city cars and superminis and full-size trucks, they are comparable to their Asian and European competitors.
A BMW sold in Europe is the same size as the same model sold in the United States.
Excluding full-size trucks most of the top-selling vehicles in the US either are also sold internationally or built to a comparable size.
Even if they were still "TANK SIZED" what difference would it make?
Used vehicles are bought to be driven not scrapped.

    • @williamegler8771
      @williamegler8771 Рік тому

@Retired Bore Many full-sized trucks are sold to fleets and are not used as regular passenger vehicles.
Tesla is similar in size to its numerous European and Asian competitors.
How are large BMW Mercedes Audi Lexus Range Rovers etc not considered "TANK LIKE"?
A majority of vehicles sold in the United States are compact or mid-sized sedans and CUVs that are comparable to similar vehicles sold in Europe.

106s are excellent little cars, I bought a Mark 1 with the 1360 diesel for £251 and run it for 5 years returning a read world 62mpg, only parked it up when the dreaded rust took hold, its still in the garage on my to do list, one day I will get around to it. I look forward to any tinkering videos.

I have one here in Australia - reputed to be the only 106 diesel in Aus as the 106 was never brought into this country and this one is a private import. I loved it, but she's off the road as a long-term project as other things are in the way of getting her back on the road. Head gasket issue and parts here are almost impossible to get, sadly......

The 106 is what I'll probably get once my 207 dies as it fits the "old enough to be interesting but new enough to reliably daily" category.
My Dad had one for a few months that he got for £75 with 170,000 miles on it to tide him over and loved it. When it went for it's MOT, the tester came out disappointed because no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't fail it! It was an absolute nail and I loved it
