Just wondered Del if you end up full of holes welding and grinding in cotton clothes?
Ah, an orificial FRO for the Spitzuntbangenpoppentuben eh? - must be Friday somewhere, it usually is.
Why did my pink, wet & floppy exhaust bandages always fall off? - (because there was never enough bloody binding wire!)
And yet, kneeling in the rain soaked gutters beside some jam packed ring-road to Lordnose-Nostrills on Ouse, one also knows that 'this can't possibly work', but - cursing those of the 'stitch-in-time' & 'sartorially elegant botty' brigade who make a proper job of it by welding in a nice warm garage - one must soldier on in sticky fingered hope of salvation - only to then hear it blow again in 400yds!
Bandages are for sick people, Pudsey Bear, & 'badly maintained machinery that sees no love'. Have a great week-end : )xx
You need some Rat Biker spirit i think buddy... beer cans and jubilee clips worked for me back in the days of black and white on my T-(rusty) 400/4 on a wet Friday, soldiering home from work in the persisting rain !!!!
My pal had an old Yamaha TX 750, and both pipes were rotted out at the same place. I suggested a couple of cones made from SS would polish up nicely, applied in a similar manner. Great patch job to keep mobile, cheers and have a nice weekend! Winter is around the corner.

It is always nice when you can get more life out of something and do it a lot cheaper than buying new. I suspect that exhaust will be on there a lot longer than next year :)

be good to see you restore these exhausts instead of replacing them. i wouldnt mine doing my 1200 daytona exhausts which are rotting from the inside out. keep up the good work del. love watching

Great option for the DIY apprentice 😊. I had a bike identical to this model and vintage pop up for sale locally here for what I thought was a great price. If I recall it was an original owner with only 23,000 km and asking was $3,000 Canadian. If it wasn’t for shipping and import it may have been worth it for you! 😢

Yes...I was right. :) Did the same on an old Yamaha 900 diversion exhaust silencer....then found a cheap OEM NOS pair of replacements a week later!!!! Typical.

quick question, how come you put all the effort to make the patch the correct shape and used it as a patch rather than cut the old rusty metal out and weld in new?
not having a dig by any means just curious?
as always great work, ive been watching a very long time and have used some of your methods as well as sharing with fellow bikers.
Hi David, that would be the method on a car body patch panel because you want the patch to lay flush with the panel and look invisible... but in this application, it just needs to be super strong and that means doubling up thickness to well past the rusted area and leaving as much of the parent metal in place as possible for strength, basically it doesn't matter what it looks like for this application.

Nice neat job Del, it's a useful tip to be able to repair exhaust systems. I did my fj1200 silencer with a bean tin, exhaust putty and a couple of jubilee clips many years ago. It lasted well and kept me on the road while I found a new system that I liked, as most at the time I thought were quite ugly. I bought a Remus stainless 4 into 1 in the end, well recommended 👍
Great fix mate, that's how we used to do it, it seems those days are lost on the modern rider, plus of course, with the build standard of modern bikes, exhausts don't really rot out any more.
@@Moonfleet41 you're right there, mate. Back in the 80's exhaust systems pretty much dissolved at the first sniff of water and salted roads! Quality has improved so much over the years.
Nicely done, Del! One more thing I’m in awe of… how you always select the right size wrenches to fit the job to be done! Me? It’s always at least three trips to the tool chest. lol

@@Moonfleet41 naw, mad skills, Mate! But yes riding is good! Btw, I found that if my MIL lays on her belly real still, I can park the front wheel of the wife’s Vespa in the back there pretty good without much wobble. Works pretty good for changing oil

While it may very well be an indictment of my ability (or lack there-off) with a MIG or ARC welder, I always limber-up the oxy-acetylene rig and braze my sheet metal repairs. It always seems to yield a cleaner job (but that could simply be attributed to the fact that I'm well-practiced at it). Regardless, well done on an effective repair! PS Get some smaller chisels instead of using a screwdriver! lol

I wouldn’t even replace that pipe tbh, until it rots through again (if at all).
Well that's a cut above the baked bean tied on with steel wire, sealed with exhaust paste. Which lasted several months tbh!
The old rat bike trick, beer cans and jubilee clips, as long as it worked till you got home from the MOT lol
Good job. Had to replace my Busa downpipes recently to stainless because of rust. On the subject of rust, although slightly unrelated, what would you use on a car underbody to stop the prevention of rust in its tracks? Got a Toyota Celica at the moment, that recent failed on sill rust, and I'm on the fence about getting the welding done or binning it, as I don't know if it's going to be something I'd be chasing my tail with, come every MOT.
Rottin cars is a terminal problem.. you're only ever prolonging the inevitable mate.... just weigh up the costs of repair against replacing the car i guess..!
@@Moonfleet41 Quite so Del, however if it an old (classic) Celica, it's likely worth saving. A slow, budget allowing version of car SOS perhaps ?
got a v6 91mx3 Mazda,,get it jacked up and waxoil it, wire brush the surface rust, treat it rust inhibitor etc. i use a 95 corolla tsport, and the wife has a 300bhp 03 tt as daily transport ,weekends spent tinkering is my hobby and keeps my cars sweet.

Neat repair,should last for years let alone just the winter 👍like the English wheel you have,the way its compact and can be stored away easily and not the usual way I think of one needing a lot more garage space,good video 👍
Thanks mate👍, jumped at that wheel when i saw it.. it's limited to what sixe of metal it can process, you couldn't roll large car panels in it..but it works for bike related stuff !
I agree. Repair might even last as long as the bike.
Great repair video Del, what wire did you use in the Mig for dis-similar materials, mild steel/stainless, or does it not matter ?
0.6mm mild steel wire mate.

What a large hole, Del. Would you like a new set of silencers? I might have two extra sets for my T300 Trident somewhere in the cellar. They were aftermarket from the early 90ies, only about 1 hp more powerful. That's why I left the originals in place since 1992.

Thanks mate, it's not so much the price, it's availability, after 28yrs the factory's long forgotten about them, there might be some cheap aftermarket ones, I remember the old Motad system from years ago, but in all honesty, this is the best repair as it's free!

We all love a bit of CAD, Cardboard Aided Design.
Footnote, maybe some fellow followers also watch "Retropower" an English fabrication shop making customised cars, much of the bodywork is CAD (computer or cardboard) design. The skillsets are much the same.

Me too mate, always quite happy to buy new pipes specially if they're stainless as it's a one time purchase, but just not in the budget at the moment, and I can't ride around with a gaping hole in the silencer!
Without even watching the video yet.I will say yes. Cut out the rot and insert new metal. Grind down and get chrome stripped and new chrome. Or rough up and paint with VHT paint. Now Im going to watch the vid.
Tbh that looks like it'll go through more than 1 winter.

Great little repair that mate. I remember fixing a blowing exhaust on an old FZR400 years ago by strapping on a bit of steel with some oversized jubilee clips. Looked shit but it worked 😂😂😂
Hey mate, I've done that too, beer cans and jubilee clips lined with a bit of exhaust paste works wonders!

Lovely repair Del. I hope there's young aspiring mechanics who watch this vid and see how important old school fixes are. Most anyone can change out new parts but there are often solutions not taught and your repair was one of them. Template, cutting, grinding, English wheel, fitting, welding thin sheet steel, drilling drain hole and off you go, likely stronger than factory...brilliant, top drawer.

Thanks mate. Same tried and tested technique for welding patch panels into cars aye.. anything less than 1mm will blow through unless you either Tack weld it, or TIG weld it..!

great repair.....the stuff you do to bikes inspires and motivates me...... the video on USD fork seal replacement was invaluable as I had previously only done RWU. This bench top english wheel....I never knew they existed so straight onto Ebay and have a watch on til payday. Thanks so much for your videos

a nasty job MOST said is impossible, same on my Trophy mine went on the main tube tho, then when I got my CB500 it had the same MOTARD exhaust, one blow hole by the hanger.......
BOTH repaired with GUNGUM and Plate Plus Black Exhaust Wrap on my RAT-Trophy and Blue on the Little CB500

Seeing this vid makes me almost upset at this guy. Why? Because he's the bearer of bad news.
Yes. It looks like I've a lot of work to do if I want to get my nearly 50 year old rice burner cooking again with the original stock exhaust. It's either what this guy has done here, or...pay the piper {literally}.
No doubt that I can do it. Just lots more work than one plate. I've got to make individual chamber walls inside the pipes to hold the baffles as well as the collars at the ends of the pipes to seal and secure them with a machine screw or other fastener. Plus I've a set of spare pipes which are also rotted.
Wish I had done this over the winter. I'd probably be riding by now.

Why replace it in the spring now?
As someone who can use an angle grinder although not a welder, I'm sick of carefully filing the edges of newly-cut metal so that they don't cut people. So what was that brilliant little tool you picked up at 5:05 to dress the edge of the patch? It seemed to work like a charm.
Reaming tool, you can get them in small sets with various head fittings

Del, adding that drain hole gave your exhaust a much beefier growl. I wouldn't be surprised if you need to re-jet after the flow increase! Better hang on to your hat when you twist that throttle!

I've also seen some really imaginative fixes too but again it boils down money del
Maybe in the future you can produce some low cost home repair videos to inform your followers of a cheaper but above all safe way of keeping what can be now a far more essential machine on the road
