Hello, nicely done sir , years of practice I would say makes you perfect, I’ve been beekeeping for 9 years now and I’m still a little nervous clipping her royal highnesses wings. Thank you for sharing your valued knowledge with us .

Did you clip one or both wings?

Normally I will clip only one wing so that I can get hold of the other if I need to catch her again but because I demonstrate the technique a lot many of my queens have both wings clipped. It doesn’t matter to them but getting hold of the short wing is trickier.

I really want to clip your hands off. This is grotesque. The queen should be able to fly away. So disgusting that these barbaric beekeeping techniques are still being used.

The queen does not fly away even if her wings are not clipped. This is a method of saving millions maybe billions of bees rather than letting them swarm into places where they are then destroyed. I would like to live in a world where people don’t destroy bees but in the meantime I will carry on protecting them in a way that causes no harm and does only good. Your abusive comments do nothing to help bees. The rest of us are too busy saving the bees we love. Please either enter into the debate based on facts and start really making the world a better place or go away and stop making violent, threatening comments.

Thank you. If I thought for one minute what I was doing was bad for the bees I would stop. But all the evidence is that this sort of good bee husbandry is good for the bees & good for the environment.

I agree Monique. I hear the excuses by bee keepers for mutilating the queen. Anyone can feel in their gut that this doesn’t feel right, no matter the justification. Your analogy is accurate. Cutting their wings is not like cutting hair. Bees are sacred and should never be exploited or used for profit.
