    Which should qualify as organic, I was under the impression that all bee honey was organic. They don't eat or pollinate fake flowers. This should be said all honey bees are organic. All natural.

      Whilst I would agree with you but the fact is that to be described as organic it has to be certified by one of the organic certification organisations and they say you can’t produce organic honey in the UK.

    The is the first time I have seen this technique, I have always put them in a Langstrom or a NUC for small swarms, the old guy who taught me bee keeping used to spray them with sugar syrup, but I don't like this, I give them some feed about 7 days after they have moved into the hive, unless their fist honey store is extremely small

      You would be surprised how little suction you get with the ash can in between the vacuum and the pipe. Using this method is always a last resort and only used where you can’t physically get your hands on the colony. You would be surprised how few casualties there are.

    Thank you for the video... As they say, one learns something new every day! I've kept bees for over 20 years now (still a beginner though 😂) and have caught swarms in the past. However, I've never thought of using the queen excluder either of the ways you've demonstrated here. I wish I'd seen this video about 6 weeks ago when one of my hives was swarming left right and centre - I managed to catch two but after I left them alone they absconded in very short order! I now know what to do to keep them in my apiary next time! Thank you!

    Reading the voice text captions, as the bees were walking into the hive, I think I heard and read that “ your queens are marked and clipped”….does this mean that you clip the wings of your queens?

    • @cotswoldbees
      @cotswoldbees 3 місяці тому

      Yes, it’s a form of swarm management. For the majority of her life she is too heavy to fly and there are no nerves in the wings so it doesn’t affect her in any way. All it means is that if the beekeeper misses the signs of swarming she can’t go off with a swarm and the bees return to the hive. The beekeeper can then carry out proper swarm management thus saving the swarm from possible starvation or destruction by someone who doesn’t want them. If you want to know more please have a look at my swarm management videos.

Wouldn't you have the same success by putting a small peace off excluder in front off the hive entrance. The bees work through it but she still can't get out. Have a safe day,Cobus🐳
