- How good is your pronunciation? In this little pronunciation workshop you can test yourself and practice pronouncing minimal pairs.
What is a minimal pair? A minimal pair is two words that have one sound which is different. For example, ship and sheep, or fun and fan.
This is basically a drill, so I don't stop and explain how to form each sound. If you are interested in watching detailed explanations of the British vowel sounds, click here:

CAB and CAP: note a clear difference in vowel length. Short vowels become even shorter before voiceless consonants, but longer before voiced ones. This phenomenon exists in other languages as well, e. g. in French, where vowels before [z], [v], [r] and [ʒ] can become extra long.
PS, this occurs even in SAVE - SAFE.
