Makita XML08 18V X2 21" Lawn Mower Review | Makita's Pro-focused Lawnmower

- We review the Makita XML08 18V X2 Lawn Mower and test run-time, cut quality, and power. We also go over the features you can expect to use, which ones we found helpful, and which could use some tweaks. For $719 (bare) and $849 (for the kit), this mower seems to go directly after the 20" Stihl RMA 510 V which, once you add a pair of 6.3Ah batteries and charger, runs $879.80. The Makita XML08 definitely targets Pros and shakes off any thoughts of homeowners picking it up for their small backyard.

The technology is incredible, those engineers at Makita are insane.
I just got one of these and it runs circles around my old gas powered toro. I ran this thing through the gauntlet on tall wet grass in mulching mode and not a hiccup. Love this thing.
Would you recommend for cutting wet grass all day? Thanks for your feedback.
Same here got a wide deck toro but such a hassle with servicing, changing stale gas if haven’t used for a while, belts always need replacing, won’t start half the time and drives you insane plus so loud. Makita all the way. Plug in battery and good to go. Direct drive off the motor no hassle’s!
Just bought one of these today to be able to easily mow between plants and in our fenced dog run area. When you see how much 5AH batteries cost, they’re practically giving the mower away. I’m a HUGE fan of Makita tools. This looks like a winner!
I just ordered this mower from HD for $699. That INCLUDES: (4) 5.0aH batteries and a dual port rapid charger AND free shipping. Price is good into July 2022.
People seem to have missed that this is aimed at the professionals. For that market, the Makita is actually pretty cheap compared to the average Honda or Toro, which are easily 1000 dollars and above for 21" variants. Commercial machines are built to mow up to 12 hours a day non stop, not once a week for 20 minutes. Commercial machines also have massive dealer networks with parts and service to back them up.
Yep
@DikoMan I have heard of a couple of them where I grew up and they were making it work.
@DikoMan come watch me. I don't know any pros the exclusively use push mowers. I don't use my Stihl Rma510v enough in a week to drain both batteries. A few minutes hear and there.
And most of my customers lawns will never see a push mower. A small gate to a back yard doesn't fit as a customer. Sorry to them.
Not aimed at professionals at all, pros will use petrol as you can’t be waiting for the batteries to charge every 30 mins 🤣🤣
@@danielhendry8376 lol sure it can be. I mow for a living and use a cordless push mower. But it isn't used often. Even them. I don't use up all the batteries in a week. And Im not the only professional that uses cordless. Lol I love how people just assume how pros would run their business 🤣🤣🤣
I love the videos and stay safe and I love mower
Very nice review. Thank you
Honest review. Nice for a change.
The Home Depot by me has these on clearance right now … marked down to 499 . I asked to the manager and grabbed it for $399 !!! Super excited . With the 4 5MAH batteries and charger !!
I just picked this up today for $400 at my local HD
Since we don’t have a hour or mile meter, Makita provides the tool in box to take off the blade and install new one. How often would you recommend it?
thanks for te review. as a residential buyer who's looking for a higher end mower just to have something that will last, I wish the handle did store away. Otherwise, I think this model or the Toro Super Recycler will be the one. thx again!
My heart says buy it !! But my wallet says pawn shop lol ;(
hey, does the steel deck extend to the front wheels, i mean is there steel under the blue plastic on the front. and would you recommend the steel deck or the aluminium deck?
I wonder how it compares to the ryobi brand, i alreayd have good ryobi lawn mower but in future was planning to either sticking with ryobi or try a makita.
Runtime please?
With 5 x 6 Amp batteris?
How long can you mow with these?
Just bought one for $700 and now that price includes the batteries. Been awhile since I’ve been this excited to mow.
Just got one at Home Depot with 4 batteries for $699. Really love it so far
Have you tried the petrol version I don’t no what one to buy this looks good
I love mine!
Any reviews yet on Echo 56 volt ope and ope lawn care tools ?
Cut quality with a bar blade versus something like a Honda with 4 swing back blades?
When are you going to finish your Greenworks 60v mower review? You did an overview two months ago and said a full review would follow shortly...
Just bought one and I love it but for 2 things, it has cheap plastic side discharge chute which knocks off easily and I know it will break before long. The other thing is the battery cover should be sealed. Clippings and dust accumulate around the batteries, which I blow off regularly.
Yes The side shoot attachment pops off on even slightly uneven ground. I took to using a bungee strap to hold the flap open
How does this Makita mower compare to the new Milwaukee lawnmower ?
Performance vs ego?
I bet Milwaukee is going to make one that runs on their MX batteries. It will totally destroy everything. This looks better than the newly redesigned DeWalt though.
I’m tired of the gas mower right now my craftsman is struggling and so am I 🙄I’m seriously thinking about the battery powered mower I’ve took that mower apart and changed out all the parts but it’s getting old and running rough I’m pretty good at working on it ready for a change
As long as one plans on spending a substantial sum for a battery mower like this Makita, which has a lot going for it, one should also consider the Stihl RMA 510V for $730, DR Power's ' $600 CE77021XENO, or, for the truly uncompromising individual: Oregon's $1,749.00 120V Professional Series.
I am headed out to buy one of these used off of marketplace. I really hope it isn't a mistake.
I used mine on high wet grass snd weeds around house snd now the propelled part isn’t working, a year old used it maybe 4xs because I have sit down mower as well. How can I fix it?
Mine has 5 year warranty so take it back to where you bought it from, should replace it
Trying to decide between ego 56volt vs Makita. Just because ego is cheaper I didn't want that to be the reason to decide.
I have seen other reviews of this mower on YT, and they say its way too heavy a mower for moist/wet grass and it stalled/shut down, several times when person was mowing in grass I thought was about 3-4" tall .
For its asking price that would be a 'no go' for me. I would just take a Honda ICE self propelled and have the advantage of - no battery range anxiety when mowing, no super expensive multiple batteries to replace periodically....and a Honda will easily last 8+ years with just minimal maintenance yearly and it will cut anything that Makita will, and at least as well I will wager.
All that said I have seen vids that also have happy users of the product, so I guess its value/worth is in the eyes of the user.
How hard is it to reverse.? Pull back. My wife complains about our Toro electric start self propelled hard to pull back. Toro makes a power reverse but then they leave off the electric start. I have a lot of makita tools and would like this bad boy.
@@Protoolreviews that is exactly the answer I was looking for. Certain portions of my yard mandate regular pulling back, including uphill so some of the shenanigans that some of the other mowers have is just not tenable. Really thinking about this Makita now. I happen to see a couple of these for sale at my home depot this evening for $499. On sale-yes the steel deck one with four batteries!
Maybe you could do a comparison of the Makita to the $829 Yard Force 120V Cordless Mower.
According to a reviewer at Home Depot, 9AH aftermarket batteries will fit!
I dont use aftermarket in Makita devices. They have two way communications with the batts
Wait .. i can't fold those handles??? Just ordered this too😢
I really wish it would have a "smart stow" option
Just bought one of these bad boys to tackle the half acre out back. Can’t wait for the weekend.
Heck I might wake up early sneak out and do a little before work tomorrow.
So how do you like it so far? Was it worth getting up early for?
@@stevehall8227 100% worth it. It bogs down less than a gas mower and it's way quieter and easier to use. I'm never going back to gas.
Im thinking of getting one in the next day or 2...my major concern is i mulch and it only has one blade????thoughts anyone? On good mower that mulches well
@@Protoolreviews i knew they had them with duel blade
@@wayiamstarr Do those blades fight each other? DUAL
Home Depot here has it with 4 batteries $699
I wanted to buy it to stay on the Makita platform with my other tools, but the cutting width is so narrow it would take an extraordinary amount of time to mow anything but a postage stamp sized lawn... what were they thinking?
what are you thinking 21" is what contractors use ffs
Over $700 dollars!!?? No way. I'm very satisfied with my 40v greenworks mower I got 6 years ago for less than half that.
Comes with over $400 worth of batteries plus charger
Impressed...they must me sent me a bad one
Really nice review but I just received my xml08z and I would like to add a couple of comments. First- So far compared with my Honda I sold, it doesn't compare with the cut qualify. Second- The ramp up speed starts to late and you have to pull the Makita backwards hoping the speed will stay at it's high speed to cut the area. Third- Makita is not adequate for cleaning up leaves and depre from the lawn.
Robert Busch
Hi Robert, so you’re saying your Honda petrol had a better quality cut? I’m considering going for this Makita and currently have the commercial Honda 21. That ramp up speed comment you mentioned too is disappointing to hear for the makita.. Is it possible to turn this feature off?. Ps. What model Honda did you use? 2 or 4 blades? Thanks
I owned the 15 year old Honda HRB216TDA and it had a single blade. Still started by the second pull. The reason I sold it was Honda would not stand behind there so called Lifetime warranty on the NeXite deck as many on UA-cam and others have mentioned, including the people I purchased it from. I am in the process of purchasing the Honda HRC216HXA and will be done with it. Again I want say that Makita is a great company but they are better than this. P.S the Makita's XUX01z multi-tool is a beast and performs like a Makita product should.
Mine cuts like a dream.....better than our Walker mower
I have the aluminum one. It's even better than the steel one imho. Even thicker deck and will not rust!
That's the one I'm interested in. Is it too heavy for mowing across a steep hill? I sold my Honda because it would slide down almost impossible to keep a straight line.
@@tonymontana3742 I do small parts downhill and it's pretty heavy! Uphill is easier because it's self-propelled. You might want to customize the wheels with spikes for more grip and prevent sliding.
Hello? What is thé Runtime of thé dlm533 ( alumiun one)
Thanks!
@@benvallons6388 That depends. I have very uneven terrain and tough grass so it drains more battery. And if you cut grass that's too high it can clog up a little and then the moter will have a hard time. But I would say on average about 20 to 40 minutes on two 5Ah batteries. The mower can hold 4 batteries though. So that can give you over an hour.
@@MarcSelman normally i am gonna have e flat garden for about 500m2. Is the dlm533 a strong mower? Thé same strength like a gas one?
MY homey depot has one on display and the sign says $499 marked down from 799.
I'm sure its the model on display. I see no boxes with a new one anywhere around so maybe they are getting rid of this model and not replacing them? 10/11/22
I would rush over and buy it what a deal but have two issues: the videos I see show its doesn't cut all that well and that flimsy side chute is a joke. The person who designed that never mowed a lawn.
I read a review on Amazon and the guy said his did a horrible job of cutting. Not enough power. The deck may be steel and commercial in design but this doesnt have the power a commercial lawn company would want,
Well, it's a lot of money...but I'm going to Home Depot tomorrow to buy one anyway!!
I expect they will be selling this with batteries for $719 retail...just like the chainsaw packages.
Definitely with batteries. Every tool shop in aus atm includes 2x5ah/6ah batteries plus dual charger with the steel deck for $799
At 719 dollars, at this point they need to have solar panels. To add more battery life/charge them.
Lol that'd be awesome
Does it mulch good with only one blade
I don't really see how electric mower could be marketed towards commercial use. Imagine having 2 mowers, 2 trimmers, and 2 blowers going for an entire day of work. To me that is just entirely too many batteries, charge time, and changing batteries out because you don't have a reasonable way to charge all of the batteries at once. With has you just get a couple separate cams of gas and you're good to go for the day. Then when the batteries end up wearing out from being used hard, and charged every day then you just buy more batteries. It's also going to expensive to buy all that and you're still going to be getting paid the same by the customer. They don't care what tools you're using to maintain their lawn, if they see a rise in price they'll just call someone else that'll deliver the same job for less. Don't get me wrong, it's kinda cool but I definitely wouldn't suggest it for commercial use.
I use cordless in my business. I am solo, and the push mower doesn't get used but it steep ditches and 1 or 2 small back yard areas. And for the trimmer/ blower, it only takes a few minutes to trim and blow off a property.
I went through gas mowers quickly due to the operating angles. And a good push mower is also 700+ bucks. Honda HRX isn't cheap. Sooner then I like they all start smoking.
But I honestly get compliments from customers on how quiet they are.
I still keep my Stihl km131 as back up and for stick edging bad areas. But I am not impressed with the Stihl Rma 510v push mower. It's ok at best.
As for the cost. You could simple market that you use cordless equipment and I know some fancy developments would pay up. Really depends on the neighborhood.
In New Zealand their is a mowing contractor who has gone all out Battery .They not only do the job its already paid for itself and now their looking at an EV van.
not sure what your thinking but this contractor has solar panels on the trailer and on the ute tat charges the fast charging batteries in no time, most probably quicker changing batteries lock and load than going to fuel station filling up cans of petrol .it costs nothing in fuel with solar panels charging.
He must drive a Tesla for sure!
Over $700 bucks for a lawn mower? For that price it better be able to till and plant a garden too!!!
Its pretty cheap for a commercial machine actually. Typical pro grade Hondas and Toros are between 1000 and 1200 dollars usually.
@@killstrees Yes, but they are also proven to last at least 10 years. I haven't yet seen a pro uses battery operated mowers.
@@tdgdbs1 there are a few out there. Hard to say how this stuff will last. Nothing is made to last any more, even those old tried and true Hondas and toros are cutting some corners now.
Lol
REMEMBER. Disconnect the spark plug cap to manipulate the lawn mower to putting the hands inside the deck where the blade is. The same applies to these electric models, pull out all batteries and test the ignition system before put the hands inside the deck where the blade is.
Safety is first and your body and family will thank you to take care of your life.
By the way, I prefer a gas engine, a little standar tank, long last at least 2 hours, and if you put the correct blade and modify the wheels adding bearings.... pfffffff you are the king of the green green grass
ONly 1 hour run tme on 4 batteries? That doesn't work for me at all. My lawn takes more like two hours.
When you take into account the time for carrying around a can of gas, maintenance of spark plug, air filter, oil change for 4 stroke, and the inevitable difficult to start with a sore back moment, this thing is so easy. I will never go back to a gas mower again.
@@stuarthancock571 I have a troy Bilt (I think) mower with the Honda engine that is 14 years old. I don’t even know where the air filter is and it’s on its second spark plug. start on the first pull every time. the only reason I have to get rid of it now it’s because literally everything around it has broken but the engine is a monster.
You don't show the mower working at normal walking pace. Instead it looks like walking at slow Mo but not slow Mo.
Does a whole review with no demo of the sound
I have the kobalt and just comparing it to what this video shows, the layout on Kobalt seems a lot better. Just how the controls on this machine face away from you and the bars. I’m guessing some of their other mowers have a better lay out than this one. No, I don’t work for Kobalt and I don’t have anything else to compare mine to. Just find this layout not well thought out.
...but I do wanna say hi to your neighbors German shepherd!
You failed to say if it was self propel or not.
God gave you shitty eyes and ears because he did mention it and it’s in the title.
At $700+ why not just buy a Honda hrx217 mower? I don’t trust battery mowers.
Milwaukee's mower eats this mower alive.
Ego eats milwaukee mower alive
How do you know that? Have you used the Milwaukee mower? The Milwaukee mower is almost 20% more powerful and it has 15 more minutes of run time. Those are the two most important features of an electric mower.
@@franklong6269 they don’t even have a look in ego is the best out their battery
No it definitely doesn't!
@@clarkfos3447 Yes I am sure the reading audience will take your ignorant word for it.
Mower looks good. but is about 100% over priced. it needs to be closeor to $350 - $400 range in order to sell. I don't think they're going to selling a lot of these.
They sell lesser models for that much
This is for professionals
Haha. I wanted to hear how it sounds but you’re talking through the whole vid. Thanks a lot.
It still costs less than the m18 Milwaukee
Wow. I ordered one and the packaging was very poor. The assembly parts were apparently in a paper like bag. The packaging was damaged and some of the parts from the bag were in the box but not enough for assembly so I was unable to even try the mower. This mower weighs 106 pounds...consider this if you want to return it. And yes, I called Makita. Makita customer service was not interested in helping me with the missing parts. I didn’t see any parts list in the box, but that could have fallen out the hole in the box during shipping. I have been using Makita tools for literally decades, but this mower convinced me to go in a different direction.
Got it 3 daya ago...mowed 2 times....worse makita took i owed...only bad makita experience i had...sucks to be honest
How come you didn't like it?
Makita overprices everything
Like 50 50, they have great deals too if you keep a eye out
I just bought a new mower, looked at all the battery lawnmowers, just not worth the price on any one of them, almost all made in china, got a push mower. Most self propelled one are garbage, front wheels are cheap plastic, with metal gear, what type of crap is that, small yard and light Troy-Bilt !
Really not seeing how this is worth that much.
You get what you pay for plain and simple! Makita is one of the best built products on the market today.
Let me just save everyone here some time. Buy the ego.
👎
might just give ego a miss batteries over priced makita batteries can be used on any power tool as well ego over priced batteries only work on garden tools
ua-cam.com/video/p2XI9qFpWbw/v-deo.html
They don't play games with the price either. Nothing I saw screams more the $399. Commercial quality, bah?
No one has asked to say Hi to your neighbor's puppy yet.... so, can I say Hi?
They lost my sale over the handles my ego mower folds up easily and I can store it stood up mowers with handles that don’t fold take up way to much room in the workshop
I Got the mower and it destroys honda gas mower in all aspects that matter
Runtime?
Bad mulch...bad runtime
Great review, silly overpriced toy.
How would this compare to the Stihl 510v or the ego
Poor quality cut !
You had till you got to price
Very over priced
UA-cam the top 5 battery lawnmowers and this one isnt even there
This guy is spinning tales. No way a commercial grass mowing company would use this mower. I just bought one and mowed with it today. NOT impressed. It's fastest speed is slower than I want to mow, and in comparison, my Honda mower can go FASTER than I want to mow. And, the Honda is way lighter and gets to max speed faster. And then I find out that you can't return a mower to HOME DEPOT if it has been used. Save your money, stay with a gas mower.
Anyone that pays over $500 for a lawnmower is a clown
Word to the wise: don’t buy this piece of shit. My first was defective, Home Depot replaced it with the non self-propelled version. The replacement failed today, won’t run with fully charged batteries. Was expecting more from Makita, but this has terrible build quality, which is matched by Makita’s terrible customer service
Why would you even bother with a battery mower? Batteries knackered after 4 years - 1 if you leave them without charge over the winter in the shed! 😂 Get a really decent petrol mower for the same price, what a waste of time 🤦
Yeah battery mowers will never be worth it. Instead of them coming down in price they seem to be getting more expensive... you can buy a used gas mower for like 200.00. I bought a brand new 22'' 175 cc mower for 300 and it has loads of power. most powerful mower in the 22'' class
I'd happily deal with dead batteries than mixing fuel, lots of noise, high maintenance, adjusting each wheel individually, and clunky to store. Ego is the way to go
Not sure what batteries your using. But I have lots of batteries over 4 years old.
In California, some of us simply don't have the option to move. Gas mowers are running out of time as a purchase option, because of our dictatorial government.
Not worth the price
How are they even justifying these prices when you have true professional lawn mower makers like Honda and Torro selling cordless mowers cheaper with far superior qualities?
Home owners will balk at the prices and commercial users will stick to their petrol powered mowers. So just who will be buying these overpriced Makita mowers?
