I'm gonna skip adding to the voices on either side of the showdown and simply say that I love the creativity of how you added the plug for Artlist. Also, it's cool to see the upgrade on your desk setup adding the monitor mount so that you can stand up for videos as another option. Awesome Tom!
Big thing I noticed, the AT isolated your voice better, not picking up reflections off the wall. This is one issue I have with my podmic, in my own space, it picks up those room reflections.
I didn't notice until rewatching the video that the AT is labeled as a "hypercardiod" mic, so it makes sense that it would be more directional and a bit better at rejecting other sounds.
I bought the Rode PodMic based off of Tom Buck's recommendation. This mic is awesome. I wouldn't have found it otherwise (as I'm new to this stuff). I'm extremely happy with my purchase. It's like a night and day difference between the Blue Yeti I had previously tried. Thank you for all of your help.
@@tombuck Lmao... I dont know why I didnt see that coming lol. Your Maono pun had me in tears! "Maono how to say this thing" 😂 I went with the PSA1 to ensure it was strong enough for the podmic.
Wow talk about divine timing! I'm literally in the process of upgrading from a broken blue yeti to the rode mic, and i caught your message just in time!
@@tombuck so I got a m1 MacBook Air for school work. but I thought id also use it for streaming. I thought about buying a mic like the rode podmic or a FIFINE K678. Sadly this laptop only has 2 usb-c ports and one head jack. If I would get a xlr to usb-c cable would it be ok to just directly connect it to the Mac or should get something else. Does connecting either mic to a usb hub which is connected to the Mac effect the sound quality
@@mikesgonzalez2717 I think buying an audio interface even if it's cheap would work and sound better. You could find some for $30-$50 like Behringer um2 or scavenge for used Focusrite on eBay. I got lucky and found one for $55.
In the past, I probably would have preferred the PodMic. With many years of mic testing myself, I easily prefer the sound of AT2040 for this application. The PodMic just sounds thin IMO. The AT2040 just sounds great out of the box. Great video!
I think the AT definitely has a more neutral sound. Someone else said it has better "dynamic range" and I think that's a good way to put it. A really great mic!
AT2040 has a much better, smoother sound, maybe a wider dynamic range. The Podmic seems to have a narrow frequency response. In this test, with your voice the AT2040 is clearly a better sounding mic right out of the box. Listening with Sony MDR 7506 headphones.
Fully agree. With a wide dynamic range set of headphones I definitely get nicer, smoother low frequencies from the AT2040. Really glad I came across this and other AT2040 vids, particularly in comparison to the Podmic, which I was interested in first.
@@tombuck Podmic sounds neat and clean to me whereas AT2040 sounds pushy and muddied a bit. I am not sure if that is what considered natural. The Podmic with EQ be the best case scenario to get a bit richer experience but even without EQ I think Podmic sounded better clearer and listenable.
Haha, thank you! I figured it's a good use of that time, and I genuinely do appreciate Artlist's support. I've only ever done 4 sponsored videos and they're 3 of them 😁
Battle of the thick and thin. For my voice, the AT2040 would win out. But short of an A/B comparison, I don't think anyone will complain about the sound of either one.
I've been on the market for a new budget mic and went back and forth between these two. I ended up getting the Podmic after hearing you and Doc recommend this mic time and time again. Enjoyed the video and the puns!
This was so informative! I was debating between the AT2040 and the PodMic and your video gave me great insight into the characteristics of the microphones :). I could really hear a difference in the low end of the AT2040 through my headphones and speakers! Using a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250Ohms/ Big tall boy floor standing speakers and PSB Image C4 Center Channel.
In the end, it's personal preference that matters the most. To be honest, I think the AT is easier to recommend since it's more neutral in its sound, but I do prefer the PodMic in this specific comparison.
I have the RODE Podmic… it’s been Meh, because it leaves me wanting more! With your comparison, it sounds like the Podmic is being recorded in a tin can! The AT2040 just sounds more clean and full.
It's crazy how much really does also depend on the speakers you're using. Personally with this video, I prefer the PodMic on my editing speakers, but much prefer the AT on my phone/iPad.
Gotta say it was nice to open UA-cam this morning and see a Monday upload from you. Is it Christmas Day? Even better is that this is a review I’ve been looking forward to. I liked the sound of the podmic just a bit more. Wish it had the gain of the AT2040 but when I get my CT1, that won’t be an issue. Looking forward to seeing the Lewitt in one of these videos now. Loved how it sounded in Heather”s mic test stream.
The Lewitt is so good! I haven't used much else since I got it and now I feel guilty. It even has this nifty little magnetic pop filter that attaches to it- super cool! I've been trying to do uploads at least every other Monday, so I'm glad you're liking it!
Hey man. Just discovered your videos yesterday. Super informative, very easy to understand. You’ve helped me pull the trigger on finally purchasing a Rodecaster Pro and Mic. Should have them next week. Love ya work, mate 🤘🏻.
Wow I'm having a hard time deciding. Just not Shure which one I like most. I'd say the AT2040 would probably be better for podcasting but I stream so I'm leaning toward the PodMic. I'm thinking the default sound of the PodMic lends itself better to EQ than the AT2040
Thank for this video! I have one SM7B and have been wanting to add a second one as I do not like the thin sound of the Podmic. But now I am thinking of buying 4 AT2040s instead of another SM7B.
If you're trying to match the SM7B I'd really reacommend checking out the Shure MV7X. It's usually around $150-$170 and sounds shockingly close (the MV7X is the XLR-only version of the MV7).
The AT2040 sounds very thin and lots of high end. Definitely like the Rode more. Great comparison and love the puns. Just found your channel and podcast. I am loving it all!!!
I ordered a second one a few weeks ago and they told be it might be February 😱 But they also said the first one wouldn't come in until September and I got it in July, so it must be tough to predict and they probably give conservative estimates to help manage expectations.
@@tombuck I bought two - only really wanted to test drive one, but they are so inexpensive! If mine come in at the end of September and you need another, let me know and I'll loan you one of mine. BTW, thanks to YOUUUUUU. I have a shiny new Super 55 on my desk. I used to use one back in the old band days. You are a bad influence, sir. I LIKE it!
@@tombuck I used to have the at2020, and I personally prefer the at2040 because it has a fuller sound to me. The podmic sounds kind of thin and hollow.
Well I've owned the Podmic for 3 or 4 years and love it. Today I bought the AT2040 and can't wait to run it through the paces. I cry every time I hear the American prices. Both mics retail at AUD$169.
Keep in mind that the US doesn't put tax into the price, so they're usually a bit closer to your prices "out the door." It'll be interesting to see what you think of the 2040 after spending so much time with the PodMic. 👍
These comments are so funny because I think it's evenly split with people preferring one mic vs. the other. Super fascinating to read 😁 In this specific instance, on my editing monitors I prefer the PodMic, but listening on my phone I prefer the AT.
In this comparison, I think I prefer the PodMic too but I'm not sure how much of that comes from me just being used to it after using it for so long. Listening on my phone, I think the AT has an edge, but on my headphones and editing monitors I like the Rode.
Both these might sound really good and I think it depends on your voice. I think the audio Technica has a little more broadcast polish to it. But it does seem to be missing a little bit of top end they both are good microphones and I don't think you could go wrong with either one but I think it depends on what you're looking for and frankly what type of voice you have.
@@tombuck before I bought my Electro-Voice re320 I watched a lot of your videos and even though you may not have directly recommended the Electro-Voice re320 your insight did help me pick out the right one for my voice. That gain pre-amp devices, seem underloocked.. In my ignorant electronic knowledge, they use phantom power what it is designed for, and i am almost certain, the response time and even signal, may be better than some "lifters" if phantom power exists.. that is what i say to myself, at least..
The AT2040 seems a bit fuller compared to the PodMic. The high end some are mentioning is more a lack of body for the PodMic. Having said that, some EQ sauce, and there would be no difference. I have a PodMic and SM7b, and my daily driver is the PodMic.
Hey Tom great video as always! I’ve heard great things about the Klark Teknik CT-1(which is similar in design to Fethead/Triton) but Klark Teknik also makes a CM-1 and CM-2 which is exact in its design style to the Cloudlifter CL-1 and CL-2. I’ve used the Klark Teknik CM-2 for over a year now and it works great and at a fraction of the cost of the Cloudlifter!
I saw the CM models but haven't heard anything about them! I'm glad to know they work well, especially since the CT1 seems to be perpetually backordered.
@@tombuck Haha yea everything seems to be perpetually backordered these days. The CM models work great and you shouldn’t hesitate to check them out if you have a need
Hello! Thank you for your great review! I´ve purchased my Podmic (will arrive on monday), but I started seeing some reviews comparing with this AT2040. Do you think it´s better for me to change my order? I will use the mic for voice over and singing (I don´t have a treated room). What´s your opinion? Thank you in advance.
It really depends on what you prefer for your specific voice. With a bit of EQ I don't think you can go wrong either way, but I would lean towards the PodMic myself 👍
Such great information and your presentation shinesas always. Completely influenced by it which of course means I'm stealing what I can in subtle ways. I prefer the Rode in this comparison. And it has that look :)
If I didn't already invest so much in the RODE ecosystem (thanks to your recommendation I have a Rodecaster Pro, multiple Podmics, multiple PSA-1 boom arms, and I'm about to get a couple of Rode Wireless GO lapel mics) I might consider switching to the Audio Technica AT2040. It's a worthy alternative to the PodMic.
It's definitely a good alternative and it'll work great with all your current Rode gear, but if you already have the PodMic, I wouldn't recommend "switching" to the AT. It could be a fun addition if you ever need to add a mic in the future.
I love the puns! New subscriber here sir... thanks for this... looking into the market for budget mics =) this is a big help... leaning towards the at2040 =)
@@tombuck I choose the AT2040 which I bought because of sound cancellation but I just understand that the hz being cutout makes the quality not as realistic because it’ll not catch the ending of words all the way due to the enhancing hertz cut. But the rode mic sounds more realistic my opinion but I already bought the At2040 there both good so I’ll just have to tweak plus it’s only for voice acting and sounds so I guess it should do fine Ann yeah thanks
I'm sorry, Tom (i know how much you love our buddy Podmic) But the AT2040 bags this one. It suits better with your voice. I think it has a more warm feel to it than the Podmic. I guess it all really boils down with what suits your voice best. Nice video as always!
I love Audio Technica, I will defend their condenser mics even though I've been using Neumann for about a year now. BUT that being said, I can't use the AT2040. Even with EQ I can't get it to sound good, no matter what. It's super disappointing because I really wanted to like it, but I just can't
It's interesting you say that because as time goes on, I feel like I don't hear much about the 2040 anymore. Maybe there are a lot of people who feel that way?
On your voice, I think I do like the PodMic actually significantly more. The 2040 kind of sounds like muddy to me? A bit like you’re talking into your arm or something? Unsure how to describe. A tad disappointed because I loved my old AT2020
I hear what you're saying. And for sure a lot of it depends on the individual voice. I have kind of a nasally-midheavy voice, which works well on the PodMic.
@@tombuck An unrelated question - what is the portable power bank you use for your rodecaster pro? I’m looking to buy one myself for it but have 0 knowledge about what kind of specs I need for it
It’s honestly just a cheap one I got from Monoprice years ago. I don’t think they even make it anymore, but I’m sure any decent modern power bank will work fine.
Great review Tom! I own 2- AT2020 that I use for my podcast.. I am guessing that this is the same mic, only made to speak into the end not side address. Keep up the great work! -Marty
The biggest difference is that this is a "hypercardioid" dynamic mic, and the 2020 is a condenser mic. So basically this one is a bit better at isolating noise, but might need a signal booster whereas the 2020 may be prone to picking up unwanted environmental sound but will have more than enough volume.
Would like to see the AT2040 compared to the Procaster. I'm looking to import a Procaster from Australia, which is about the same price as AT2040 sold locally (makes sense, Rode is Australian).
Wow… they sound so different. Both good. I think it matters if you are listening to content with or without video! The audiotechnica, I think, I prefer WITHOUT watching the video, LOL. it’s very radio sounding which sounds strange if you can see the speaker… it almost emphasizes the audio quality if you got video with the content. I made a read-through of a chapter I wrote for students, and I totally overdid the bass boost on pod mic, I didn’t realize until now that it was because you can SEE me that exaggerated how much I don’t sound like that in real life Lolol
I'm pretty shocked at how different they sound! Especially since it seems like the AT is really being marketed as a direct competitor to the PodMic. I'm guessing that AT listened to customer feedback about the Rode and then tried to address that as best they could (lots of people say that the Podmic is too thin or leans too much to the high end). I think overall in this specific comparison I prefer the PodMic, but I'm also super used to its sound, so that might make me biased.
LOL those puns! Tom , you're amazing at what you do and inspire so many other content creators, and i've said it once i'll say it again. I love your B roll!
Thanks for all the support! I really Ashpreciate it. In this case the b roll is just stock footage clips played in a loop on my computer's display. I did a whole video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/odDCbrzzeFc/v-deo.html
Can I use the Klark Teknik booster just like the cloudlifter with the booster in the middle of two cables? I really hate how bulky looks my microphone on camera connected directly to the mic, I mean something like this chain FOCUSRITECABLEKLARK--->CABLEMICROPHONE
Ive never heard either in person, but from this video, I'd say that if you're reading Jack and the beanstock for your audience, use the podmic. Its perfect for cleanly spoken dialog. But when its time for the FE FI FO FUM part, switch to the 2040. I spoke to a guy this week who says he uses his podmic as a kick drum mic. He says its more focused than his beta52 or d6.
Your joking right, The podmic is like it is has all the lows striped out of it and sounds thin and crap, Well its full alright full of crap and overrated go with the procaster AT2040 for the win here.
A few points to make in the AT2040's favor, and why I think it's the better buy. Firstly, I do think it has a more full, richer tone that a lot of people are going to prefer. Podmic sounds good, but it sounds flatter when compared to the more expensive competitors like my Procaster, the RE20, or SM7B. IMO, even a budget Behringer SL75C I got for a backup IMO has a better tone. Second point is the dimensions. The Podmic is unnecessarily large and heavy, even dwarfing the Procaster in size and weight. 937 grams and a diameter of 62mm is just ridiculous. In comparison, a Procaster is 53mm in diameter and 745 grams and nobody would say the Procaster isn't built like a big, beefy tank of a mic. Third point is that mount. I am not entirely sure what they were going for with that yoke. My guess is the only thought Rode put into that was to make it look somewhat like an SM7B. The AT2040's solution works 100% just as well, but doesn't add significant size and mass to a $100 mic. There's also more area on the AT2040 for a third party shock mount to grip onto, should you decide to not use the provided mount at all. I think the AT2040 wins out in almost all categories for most people. Enough so that when I was shopping for a new mic, the Podmic was available, and I thought the Procaster was enough better than it to spend double the price. However, were the AT2040 available at that time, I would have almost certainly bought it instead and I don't think I would have been disappointed.
@@tombuck Yeah, honestly the size and mass of the Podmic was a letdown. You have to invest so much more into a boom arm just to get one that can support its weight.
How about trying the mics with a FatHead connected? I am happy with the (2) Rode Podmics I bought, but the Shure SM7B is the winner which I just bought 2 weeks ago.
The Shure is an exceptional mic. I didn't use these with a FetHead, but the audio quality/gain level should be virtually identical to the Cloudlifter that I did use.
I've been watching reviews and comparisons between these two mics for the past 3 days and still can't decide what would be a better choice, lol. Quick background: I work as a software engineer and, as I've been involved in a lot of calls lately, I decided to upgrade my microphone to something that would sound more professional and clear. For that, I'd say the Podmic is a clear winner. But, I also need good noise rejection (especially for the hums from my computer and typing on the keyboard) and shock protection, because I tend to tap a bit harder, sometimes. It seems like the AT2040 is better at this, but is it worth to trade the PodMic's sound quality for these features? I too have a more nasally mid-heavy voice and I'd like to counter that as much as I can, to sound more clear. I will be using a boom arm and pop-filter as well, because I am used to having the microphone close to the mouth (so I don't need to shout, haha), so the proximity effect will be rather present. Which mic you think would be recommend in this use case?
I have a podmic but I think I love the audio technica....it is richer at the low end even when I far away. The the podmic can give the same when you are closer
True. I didn't realize this until watching the video back, but the 2040 is technically a "hypercardioid" mic, which means it is a bit better at being super directional compared to the PodMic.
Thank you! I really appreciate that! I'm fortunate that I can edit these videos to make it look simple- I think uploading the raw footage would be a different story 😁
Hey! How do I get rid of the buzzing/humming noise? I connected my RODE Podmic with an XLR cable into a GoXLR mini but it makes a buzzing/humming noise please help!
It's tough to say with certainty, but buzzing/humming is usually an issue with the cable. Some cables, especially cheaper ones, are more prone to electrical interference from computers/phones/etc. (And I don't say this as an elitist, "oh you should only use super expensive cables- I use a lot of cheap cables myself and encounter problems often 😁 ). Sometimes cables can fail too or have loose connections. Long story long, try swapping out your cable and seeing if that helps. Also check that your cable isn't running close to any power supplies. Sometimes having a cable near a surge protector can cause interference.
The Rode sounds more approachable and conversational. The AT sounds more official and broadcaster-y. At least with your voice. With the ability to process, the Rode seems much more versatile. The AT would probably be better just running it raw with no lifter or processing. They both sound really good, but distinctly different... just no idea how they'd sound with my voice.
It realyl does depend on specific voices. For whatever reason, the PodMic seems to work for me, but I've heard other people get awesome sounds form the AT.
I've been looking at it and it looks interested. My heavily biased opinion though is that all these copycat machines just aren't as good. They have some nifty features, but so far I haven't found anything that's a true "complete package" like the RCP (especially when you take all the regular firmware updates into account).
This review is better than professional. Maybe I like Rode more, but it is quite sensitive for distance - and that is a problem with quests because thay move all over the place, in that case maybe Rode Wireless Go or somekind of headset with mic.
It's definitely tough with guests who aren't used to using mics or who don't have good mic technique. In a way that's why I prefer condensers for some cases, since it's usually easier to get enough volume even if they move away. But like you said, a lav mic is a smart choice too since it's stuck to them!
I love videos like this; my only concern is that most reviewers have higher pitched voices than I do. If I like the lower frequency response of a mic on your voice or on Bandrew’s voice from Podcastage, is it going to turn muddy on a deeper voice? 🤔
Speaking for the PodMic specifically- it's really nice at lower voices. I haven't heard as much variety with the AT, but I have several "deep-voiced" friends who use the PodMic and sounds awesome.
Just wondering is that how you are supposed to talk to the at2020? I thought the capsule is in it's aide and would sound better of you talked to the sides
I know this is an older video but do you think the 2040 would need the cloud lifter on the Rodecaster pro II? I have mine coming in on Monday and was considering the AT2040. I guess even a step further, do you feel the sound of either of these is different on the Rodecaster Pro II compared to when you did this review?
Fortunately nothing needs a Cloudlifter with the RCP2 👍 Rode actively discourages using one since it will introduce noise into the signal. It sounds like a big claim, but I've tested it and it's totally true.
do you happen to have an updated video with the new Rodecaster Pro II? I just pre ordered one and now I'm in that stage of looking for a microphone lol! the only mic I have is a TC Helicon MP-60 which is connected to my TC Helicon VoiceLive Touch and it's sound OK lol!
Both mics sound great! This may sound shallow but I do like the looks of the Podmic much better. Quick question though, is Voicemeeter the only way I can add EQ to my Zoom calls? Running a Podmic with a Klark Teknik CM-1 and a Motu M4.
I haven't used the Motu myself, but it looks like they have their own EQ software: motu.com/products/software/mwc/masterworks-eq.htm I personally run everything through the Rodecaster, so that's typically where I handle any EQ. You could probably run things through OBS and add adjustments there if needed. It might be a little clunky, but it _should_ work.
@@tombuck Thanks for your reply, Tom! I'm currently thinking of upgrading my interface to a Rodecaster Pro but afraid it might be overkill for my Zoom/Discord needs. Anyway, thank you for the link above! I might try downloading Performer Lite to check out if the EQ there works for livestreaming. Otherwise, I guess I'm stuck with either OBS or Voicemeeter.
It's worth putting in an order though. I ordered mine in June and they said it wouldn't be available until September, but I ended up getting it in early July 🤷🏻♂️
Hey Tom! I already have a Rode Procaster, but I still watched for fun! The scarecrow gag actually made lol which is saying a lot for me! Unrelated to your excellent mic review: I'm still fascinated by the boldness (and skill) with which you mix Sony and Canon footage and you've given me the courage to ignore the turf war on UA-cam and do what I want, which is to get the FX3 for A-Cam video and hang on to my R's for multicam and photography. Why didn't you get the FX 3 btw? 🤔
If you haven't seen my Final Cut Pro Preset video, you might want to check it out because that's where I talk about how I mix the cameras. It really hasn't been an issue for me. And to take it even further- the R footage is 1080 and the Sony is 4K. So that means it's mixing Canon HD footage with Sony 4K footage 😱 Honestly, both systems have their advantages, so it's kind of silly to draw a line in the sand. I love being able to use whichever tool will be best for a specific purpose. I really think the FX3 is awesome and the tally lights would be exceptionally helpful for me as a solo creator, but the a7SIII was cheaper and the viewfinder is helpful since I live in the super bright desert where screens don't always work great outside.
@@tombuck Aha... 😊 That makes total sense. My cameras work a lot in the Caribbean sun which makes me appreciate the Rs, but when they're outdoors they're rigged with an external monitor and hood, as would be the FX3. I don't like the Alpha series design language (although I've owned the A7iii) and I do love the grey FX3 look and those tally lights! I'll definitely check out your FCP video. I didn't check it out cause I use Resolve, but a preset is a preset! Thanks Tom! 👍🏾

I'm looking forward buy the podmic but will is the behringer umc22 and the Klark Teknik Mic Booster CT 1 good enough for it since am on a budget and cant afford the scarlett focusrite?
That should be good. I'd recommend starting with the mic and the interface and then adding the CT1 later if you think you need it. HOWEVER, since the ST1 seems to be on backorder just about everywhere right now, it could be a good idea to order it and then just cancel if you decide you don't need it.

There’s the Samson Q9u which is pretty nifty. Rode said they didn’t change the sound of the new PodMic, but the samples I’ve heard to sound different in a good way.
Between those two, I like the Q9u more. The more I use the AT, the less I like it with my voice. If yo udon't need the USB functionality, the new Shure MV7X is also a great option that costs a bit less than the Samson.

I'm really happy that there are some cheaper options out there! Recommending a $150 Cloudlifter for a $100 mic has always been tough for me. So far the Klark Teknik has worked REALLY well for me. I ordered a second one, but it seems that they're all on backorder at the moment.
The Klark Teknik is great. Feels sturdy and I've had no issues with it over the past 4-5 months I've been using it. It does seem to go out of stock quickly, so I'd recommend backordering it.

Dynamic range- that's a good way to explain it. I think the AT will more easily suit a wider range of voices straight out of the box.
Fully agree. With a wide dynamic range set of headphones I definitely get nicer, smoother low frequencies from the AT2040. Really glad I came across this and other AT2040 vids, particularly in comparison to the Podmic, which I was interested in first.
I agree the AT2040 is way better, Good thing I never bought a Podmic.
Nice one again. My personal taste: I like the Audio Technica better with your voice. A bit warmer more radio-ish 😁
Straight out of the box I do think it’s a bit easier to listen to.
What a cleaver move to see us your promotion. I never had listened promotion but this time you nailed it... Love you...
Haha, thank you! I figured it's a good use of that time, and I genuinely do appreciate Artlist's support. I've only ever done 4 sponsored videos and they're 3 of them 😁
Thanks again for another great comparison Tom! I have 4 Pod mics with my RodeCastor Pro but I love the sound coming from AT2040.
They're both pretty awesome!
I really do love the PodMic, and it's super easy to EQ if you ned to adjust the sound a bit. Plus it's built to last forever!
I’m really happy to hear that! Hopefully you can choose the mic that’s right for you 👍
@@tombuck I ended up going with the AT2040! I’m excited to try it out!
Im swinging towards the podmic sound.. Something about sounds more full or warm or better than at2040.. I don't know, my ears prefer the podmic sound.
In the end, it's personal preference that matters the most. To be honest, I think the AT is easier to recommend since it's more neutral in its sound, but I do prefer the PodMic in this specific comparison.
@@tombuck Neutral is good because it is an advantage for post processing?
I have the RODE Podmic… it’s been Meh, because it leaves me wanting more!
With your comparison, it sounds like the Podmic is being recorded in a tin can! The AT2040 just sounds more clean and full.
It's crazy how much really does also depend on the speakers you're using. Personally with this video, I prefer the PodMic on my editing speakers, but much prefer the AT on my phone/iPad.
Hi Tom! I enjoyed how you compared the two. Always fun watching ya at the same time benefit from your delivery of the products 😎
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! These comparisons are pretty simple, but they're super fun to make!
Loved the blind mic test! Always a joy to watch your videos.
Thanks so much! 😁
Nice background on close-ups of each mic - very colorful and creative!
Thanks! I played some stock footage on my computer monitor 😁
Fantastic! I hope you really like them and make some cool stuff!
Wow I'm having a hard time deciding. Just not Shure which one I like most. I'd say the AT2040 would probably be better for podcasting but I stream so I'm leaning toward the PodMic. I'm thinking the default sound of the PodMic lends itself better to EQ than the AT2040
You can’t go wrong either way. Two other potential options if you can stretch your budget: the Shure MV7X or the Lewitt LCT240. 😬
I really appreciate that! Thanks for the kind words!
BTW, according to my guys at Sweetwater, the CT1 should be back in stock by the end of September. At least, that's the story at this moment.
I ordered a second one a few weeks ago and they told be it might be February 😱
But they also said the first one wouldn't come in until September and I got it in July, so it must be tough to predict and they probably give conservative estimates to help manage expectations.
I LIKE it!
My preferences:
Rode for Streams (is less boomy when you are close to it).
And AT2040 for recording voices at studio or maybe radio (is more warm).
But always depends on the voice to record xD
Totally depends on voice, you're right! The new Shure Mv7X is a bit more expensive than these, but I think it has an absolutely fantastic sound.
Awesome comparison! PodMic sounds a bit better here, has a bit more of top end, I have a couple of PodMics as well and absolutely love it!
I like the PodMic more in this comparison too, personally. But I'm wondering how much of that is because I'm more used to its sound than the AT. 🤔
@@tombuck It may be. The AT2040 has a fuller, less flat sound to me, like the Podmic is just missing something.
I don't like the excessive treble of PodMic.
Keep in mind that the US doesn't put tax into the price, so they're usually a bit closer to your prices "out the door."
It'll be interesting to see what you think of the 2040 after spending so much time with the PodMic. 👍
hello, how did you find the 2040 after all that time with the podmic?
Good Video I just got my Audio Technica AT2040 in the mail just waiting for the mix amp so I can use it!
I hope you really like it!
Wow, I love the AT2040. At the switch, there is no debate.
These comments are so funny because I think it's evenly split with people preferring one mic vs. the other. Super fascinating to read 😁
In this specific instance, on my editing monitors I prefer the PodMic, but listening on my phone I prefer the AT.
Great comparison. Sound is really subjective, comes down to preference, I think the podmic sounds better but the AT2040 is great too🤷🏻♂️
In this comparison, I think I prefer the PodMic too but I'm not sure how much of that comes from me just being used to it after using it for so long. Listening on my phone, I think the AT has an edge, but on my headphones and editing monitors I like the Rode.
Great review, super helpful in making a decision. Thanks Tom.
So glad to hear it! Hope you find the one that’s perfect for what you need 👍
So much of it really does depend on your individual voice. I need to get like 15 different people with different voices to help with mic tests 😁
@@tombuck before I bought my Electro-Voice re320 I watched a lot of your videos and even though you may not have directly recommended the Electro-Voice re320 your insight did help me pick out the right one for my voice. Podcast isn't taking off as well as I would like but it sure does sound good LOL
That gain pre-amp devices, seem underloocked.. In my ignorant electronic knowledge, they use phantom power what it is designed for, and i am almost certain, the response time and even signal, may be better than some "lifters" if phantom power exists.. that is what i say to myself, at least..
I'm pretty fuzzy on the technical details myself, but I appreciate that it's inexpensive! 😁
The AT2040 seems a bit fuller compared to the PodMic. The high end some are mentioning is more a lack of body for the PodMic. Having said that, some EQ sauce, and there would be no difference. I have a PodMic and SM7b, and my daily driver is the PodMic.
I still really love the PodMic, especially when it’s paired with the “correct” voice 😎
@@tombuck can I used Rodecaster pro with tow phones 📱Android to do podcast Tom?
12:00 ouch 😶 - well… thanks… I guess? For being my 1:1 template 👀❤️
You are welcome 🤓
@@tombuck thank for you quick reply!I've liked to listen this "warm sound" of AT2040...I have to think abou it. Keep the good work! Take care! ☺️
Such great information and your presentation shinesas always. Completely influenced by it which of course means I'm stealing what I can in subtle ways. I prefer the Rode in this comparison. And it has that look :)
Please steal! 🙌
Both sound Good , sort of leaning towards the AT2040 has a more Transparent sound...
It's definitely more neutral, which I think means it's likely to sound "better" on a wider variety of voices.
AT2040 vs Donner PO8 or FiFine k688
Such a great video Tom! Your doing some nice Mic Showdown
Thanks Sammy!
I love the puns! New subscriber here sir... thanks for this... looking into the market for budget mics =) this is a big help... leaning towards the at2040 =)
The best Vs battle I was just considering these two
Hopefully it helped! Good luck in choosing the right mic 👍
It's a great mic! I personally prefer the PodMic in this comparison, but the AT is significantly easier to EQ.
Always good information Tom You are the best
Thanks so much!
@@tombuck much love, thank you man!
Great review as usual Tom. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
The at2040 is designed to look similar to the higher end Audio Technica BP40. The BP40 looks somewhat similar without the shockmount.
Very true. Also a bit like the RE20.
These are super close. The AT feels a bit richer to me, but it's muddled on the top end. The Podmic feels like it has slightly better range.
I just bought the audio technica hope it sounds good thank you for the video bro
Hope you enjoy it!
Yup it definitely sounds great and replaced my hyperx usb mic
Would like to see the AT2040 compared to the Procaster. I'm looking to import a Procaster from Australia, which is about the same price as AT2040 sold locally (makes sense, Rode is Australian).
I don’t have a Procaster on hand for a comparison, but 100% I would chose that over the AT.
@@tombuck Hahaha, you did NOT just do a Ashpreciate it lol hahah
Can I use the Klark Teknik booster just like the cloudlifter with the booster in the middle of two cables? I really hate how bulky looks my microphone on camera connected directly to the mic, I mean something like this chain FOCUSRITECABLEKLARK--->CABLEMICROPHONE
Ive never heard either in person, but from this video, I'd say that
if you're reading Jack and the beanstock for your audience, use the podmic. Its perfect for cleanly spoken dialog.
But when its time for the FE FI FO FUM part, switch to the 2040.
I spoke to a guy this week who says he uses his podmic as a kick drum mic. He says its more focused than his beta52 or d6.
Ooh, I’d like to try it on a kick drum! I can see how it’d work great for that.
@@tombuck I think it would be good for overheads too. It handles high SPL levels
Definitely The podmic is much better with smooth sound , the at2040 is getting there but not yet still need more
Your joking right, The podmic is like it is has all the lows striped out of it and sounds thin and crap, Well its full alright full of crap and overrated go with the procaster AT2040 for the win here.
AT2040 vs MV7. A comparison I would love to see.
That’s a great idea! To spoil it, AT wins for price, MV7 wins for sound quality and versatility.
Thanks for this perspective!
What was your choice, finally? Similar situation in mu case... Thanks!
Tom, great info. You make it all look so easy - your a natural.

@@tombuck Okay I just bought my cable, mic and goxlr but will try when I get a new cable
@@tombuck Do you think some thing like a Fender Pro Microphone Cable in 3m would work?
is a mixer necessary? i was thinking just getting a mic.
You’ll need a mixer or interface for any XLR mic, but a USB mic can be connected directly to a computer.
Love the video. I would love to see the review of Tascam Mixcast 4 review. an alternative to rodecaster pro
I've been looking at it and it looks interested. My heavily biased opinion though is that all these copycat machines just aren't as good. They have some nifty features, but so far I haven't found anything that's a true "complete package" like the RCP (especially when you take all the regular firmware updates into account).
Such an excellent review video. 👏 Thank you! 😃💯🎙️ Enjoy your quality setup, little jokes, and free tips to save some cash.
The AT2040 is the more robust sounding mic. Thanks for the review. (The Cloud Lifter definitely does it thing!!)
AT makes some really great stuff!
Here in Brazil both microfones are in the same range of price. I think that audio Technica is better. Great video!
AT makes some absolutely great gear!
The AT2040 is awesome with the cloudlifter and RODE Podcaster. Just wow.
Definitely some awesome mics!
@@tombuck did you have tested the Samson Q2U with one of them side by side?
@@technickr I have some mics like podmic, Q2U, ATR2100, etc. Based on side to side comparison, Samson Q2U produces lots of sibilance.
Do the sterling h224, think this beats the focusrite in cost to performance. You can find it for 80$ rn too
Oh man I'm gonna say the Rode podmic dunks the AT2040 ! Although, the AT2020(condenser) is a better option then both imo.
No it does not. Podmic sounds like a freaking toy.
Great comparison! I'm using the podtrak p4 as interface instead of a focusrite. Do I'm missing something? PodMic 🙌
You're actually in a great position if you're using the P4 because it should have more than enough gain to run either mic without a signal booster 👍
@@tombuck Thanks for the reply!
Just wondering is that how you are supposed to talk to the at2020? I thought the capsule is in it's aide and would sound better of you talked to the sides
The AT2020 is a side address mic (which is super common for condensers), but the 2040 in this video is an end-address dynamic mic.
Fortunately nothing needs a Cloudlifter with the RCP2 👍
Rode actively discourages using one since it will introduce noise into the signal. It sounds like a big claim, but I've tested it and it's totally true.
@@tombuck Well that's good to know. I always felt like Could lifters and Fetheads were just 1 more piece of gear that could potentially go bad on you.
do you happen to have an updated video with the new Rodecaster Pro II? I just pre ordered one and now I'm in that stage of looking for a microphone lol! the only mic I have is a TC Helicon MP-60 which is connected to my TC Helicon VoiceLive Touch and it's sound OK lol!
I've been putting out quite a few RCPII videos lately. The PodMic sounds great with it, especially since the preamps are so quiet!
Both mics sound great! This may sound shallow but I do like the looks of the Podmic much better.
Quick question though, is Voicemeeter the only way I can add EQ to my Zoom calls? Running a Podmic with a Klark Teknik CM-1 and a Motu M4.
I haven't used the Motu myself, but it looks like they have their own EQ software:
motu.com/products/software/mwc/masterworks-eq.htm
I personally run everything through the Rodecaster, so that's typically where I handle any EQ.
Went to buy the ct1, and they wont have any instock state side tell mid oct :(
It's worth putting in an order though.
So that means it's mixing Canon HD footage with Sony 4K footage 😱
Honestly, both systems have their advantages, so it's kind of silly to draw a line in the sand.
Thanks Tom! 👍🏾
Big fan of your videos and style, Tom. I hope some day my reviews will be as good as yours! Here is my review of a RODE vs. Sennheiser mic: ua-cam.com/video/ubiPLXLCMEw/v-deo.html
It sounds a lot better w the cloudlifter, I use an SM58, I think I need to get a cloudlifter
A lot of it does depend on your mixer, but I think that boosters can sometimes bring out a lot of nuance in the mic's sound that's pretty neat.
@@tombuck Thank you for answering and for those great reviews! it's a great mic ill definitely get it .
Both sound great!
You are outstanding in your field too...
Haha, thank you for this outstanding comment 😁
An aside, what are the headphones you are using in this video? Waiting for my PodMic to turn up to use with my newly acquired RodeCaster. Need some good phones.
They're Meze 99Neo's and I love them. They're super comfortable and give really accurate sound.
@@tombuck I must say, that all the way from Australia, I absolutely love you casts. My gorgeous partner is about to start creating internal work related podcasts. I did research for her and came across your review on the RodeCaster Pro so I bought her one straight away and am now awaiting for the PodMic to turn up. If she ever gets into video for her casts, I will be using yours as a learning tool for showing how to produce ultra pro casts. Love them..
Nice review as always. Now I'm torn between the AT2040 vs the New PodMic USB. I prefer the sound of the At2040 but I love that the new PodMic is USB + XLR. I really want a dynamic mic with USB C. Is any other options for me? Thanks in Advance.
There’s the Samson Q9u which is pretty nifty. Rode said they didn’t change the sound of the new PodMic, but the samples I’ve heard to sound different in a good way.
Tom, which do you like best, the AT 2040 or the Samson Q9U?
Between those two, I like the Q9u more. The more I use the AT, the less I like it with my voice. If yo udon't need the USB functionality, the new Shure MV7X is also a great option that costs a bit less than the Samson.
the motu m2 2x2 is a good audio interface as well.
I've heard great things about that one!
Mr. Buck, i swear to you i always dream of make some radionovelas (radio-soap-operas) using the different microphones you have tested and reviewed in your channel. The shure vintages would be perfect for detective stories. Podmic sounds more 1950's sci-fi narrator! Thanks for the videos and sorry for my bad bad bad english!
I love the idea of letting the mic dictate the style! 😎
Thank you for this comparison, Now I thinking of purchasing the At2040. But may I know what software/app are you using for recording the voice?
That AT lows sound really good 👍
I agree!
Tom, the AT2040 sounds a tat better than the PodMic 🤔
It's a really fun mic. And it's hard to communicate via video, but the build quality is outstanding.
Great comparison ! Thinking of getting a cheaper booster for my fiancé. I have a cloud lifter but it’s a single version.
