Check out the in-depth mic comparison video! It’s 54 minutes long and compares the PodMic USB to 26 other microphones with a male and female voice in each example: ua-cam.com/video/QkxgSxBv6gQ/v-deo.html
Love the blue USB type C cable. Don’t see a link on where you got that from as Well as The headphone cable. Can you send the link. Only see the XLR one. Thanks
Hey Tom great video, anychance youve heard if Rode or another brand has made the good looking Rode popfilter available separately yet? The one that is included in the USB version.
At this point your videos are addicting I watched this one on accident and couldn’t stop until it was over lol. I think it’s a combination of the colors you chose for you colorful set. Doesn’t make me feel like I need a degree watching but also receiving very useful information. Your consistent delivery along with your consistent engaging energy is very captivating making it easy to watch. Glad I’m here.
With your voice the rode new mic at your settings sounds better to me because your voice and presentation is colorful and fun with the videos I watch. The NT1 does sound really good too.
I don’t know where or how these "settings are saved," but they reset themselves on their own. Also, if you use the Rode PodMic USB with a PC, simply connecting to Google Meet will change the gain and all the mic settings (what?). Connecting to Zoom will randomly change them again. The info sounds promising, but the reality is far from satisfying.
Woah - I had no idea that the Rode software will handle multiple USB mics on one computer! I'm too far down other 'Rodes' 😉 at this point, but that's some incredibly useful functionality (and information) right there.
I can understand why professionals consider these multifunctional mics to be expensive and unnecessary, when they already have a mixer and post production tools. For those of us who don't have a mixer, who want a mic that will work with both XLR and USB, this fits a clear niche. After looking at the price of the MV7, I really wanted to like this microphone. But the sound without the EQ is harsh and thin, very hard to listen to.
I commented about it under one of your videos around a year ago, but this seems a fitting moment to do it again: FDUCE SL-40. Same functionality as PodMic USB at a *third* of the price ($60 on Amazon when i'm commenting). Solid metal build, looks great, no software. USB-C, 3.5mm and XLR out. Decent sound (to my ear). It's worth getting for a budget mic comparison. When comparable mics are 200-250 dollars it's odd not to hear it mentioned more.
I recently mentioned the SL-40 on one of Tom's livestreams. I bought 2 XLR versions just so I could have some inexpensive reasonable sounding mics for some client podcasts. Now that may sound counterintuitive but I wanted to be able to have some well made, lightweight gear that could be chucked in a bag, and carried on trains & planes, without risking damaging my SM7Bs or Procasters. Having recorded 4 casts using the SL40s, I love how they sound, with a bit of EQ via my Rodecaster they really punch above their weight, HOWEVER.... the biggest flaws in the SL-40 are now apparent after many hours of use.... handling noise is awful, they pick up everything - footsteps, desk noise, buttons on jackets - far too much! Secondly, the cardioid rejection is very unpredictable. They behave like a heavy noise gate has been applied. Sometimes they pick up cleanly, then on other occasions they simply fade out the vocal, it's not a fault as I have 2 mics and they both behave in the same way. All said and done, for a solo gig or personal hobby, the budget SL-40s are hard to beat, but the 'professional' qualities seen in mics like the SM7B or Procaster are worth the money, in the time saved in post-production.
I wish the price was more competitive. Hard to know what the right price should be though. I am a Sennheiser profile owner and I am very happy with it. So it would have to be pretty close for me to want to "sidegrade". The combo XLR option and software I can say would add to the price a little. How about... 160? Come on, RODE!
Watching... watching.. and then the moment you switched to (my) MV7 haha, I'm home buddy 🙂 I was well aware that I's using the $150 price difference between the MV7 and SM7B for the funding of my next mic --> enter Earthworks SR314. I'm kinda strategic here because this mic will both suit the studio and livestreaming, as well as be my live mic. Now the ADHD kicked in, I went to re-watch Curtis Judd's video on the SR314, remembered he's just released a course about lighting, checked that out and.. bought it. Tweeted about it, went on doing something else, annotated that I should listen to your podcast while taking the train tomorrow... the time went and now I'm back here to listen to the end and, yeah, that's how my brain works.. or not 🙂
I found a video once that did a tear down & paint job of the OG Podmic. Used the info to add more foam inside on top of the capsule. Added a bit of low end, tamed the top end and plosives.
Great video, Tom! My two cents: If you want to save $, get the previous podmic and find the windscreen from the new one separately (save $70). For the same cost ($130), the Sennheiser Profile gives you way better sound quality and manual controls IMO. However, I do think the NT USB+ is hands down the best mic for the money currently, if you're willing to control it through software.
Hey Tom, great video. I recently picked up a Podmic USB and am using it via USB to record voiceovers in Davinci Resolve. I love the build quality and the look of the mic, but I'm struggling to get anything close to acceptable audio levels without maxing out the gain. When you use it via USB, what gain level are you setting? Have you compared the resulting audio level to other mics when making recordings, i.e. head-to-head, without increasing the playback volume for the Podmic clips? No one would call me quiet, but I have to set the gain to 63DB (maxed out) when speaking directly into the mic from 2 inches away. Even then, the bars are just peaking into the bracketed area on the meters. I can't force the bars into the red even if I shout. If I set the gain at what I think is more realistic (50 to 55 DB), the resulting audio, when used in Davinci Resolve for voiceovers, needs to be boosted in Davinci by another 10 to 15 DB to be similar to the audio in my iPhone footage. It isn't a Davinci issue because I get the same result if I capture the audio using Connect and export it to a file that I later import into Davinci. The Podmic USB file is quieter in Davinci and any Windows app than all other audio played.
Out of all the reviews I've seen of Rode products yours have been the most intuitive and helpful. With this being said could you possibly do a video on how to set up and use the Rodecaster Pro 2 with Voicemod? I'm in my 60's and I'd like to start streaming as well as podcasting but I can't seem to get around all the latency. Most likely it's just me but I really could use some help.
Another high quality mic that's aesthetically please for a solid price point is the PreSonus PD-70. Has a similar "popular" aesthetic as the SM7B, but at a Pod Mic price point with great quality audio.
Of the two Rode mics, the newer Podmic USB has a richer tone with no EQ. I noticed the same thing with mine compared, for instance, to the Shure MV7 which to my ears is way to bright without some serious EQ. At least for my baritone speaking voice.
I can’t say how much I loved this video! Where did you buy the usb colored cables ? Where can I find them with great longitude to connect from de Rode Pod Mic to IPhone and not have my iPhone camera in my face ? Does this cable work on IPhone 14 ? Donde have to buy any additional cable ?I don’t want to use my laptop , only my iPhone for videopodcasting till now 😄
The USB cables are from Rode, but I don't think they sell them unfortunately? The XLR cables are also Rode and they DO sell those! You can also use Rode's SC19 cable to connect the mic directly to your iPhone (I've done it withe my iPhone 14 Pro and it works great). I'm really happy you enjoyed the video, thank you very very much for the kind words 🙏
I would choose the PodMic USB. The Scarlett Solo doesn't have the best preamps, so you might find yourself also needing a booster. Plus the overall sound quality and EQ options via Rode Central are better with the PodMic USB 👍
The lighting and richness of this video is 🤌 It's one thing to have a cool comparison video, but then add to that this video's quality and wow! Thanks for the review of the PodMic USB.
The PodMic USB has a "Way more" better quality and more functionality. I think from what I'm hearing from the PodMic USB, I would say it sounds good and it's even got an Equalizer app for it too so I can set what ever I like. 😊 And I could set a reverb to it too for the wider stereo audio. 😁
Hey! Great video, I come here to ask you where do you get your blue USB-C cable that you used with your PodMic USB and also the green 3.5 jack that you connected to your headset ?
Rode sent it over last summer with some other cables and I’m not sure if it’s something they’re planning to sell or just something they happened to have on hand and tossed in the box 🤷🏻♂️
5:08 I suppose It's because of very limited frequency graph of PodMic. Although PodMic's description says it supports up to 20 kHz, actually it supports ~13-14 kHz. Fun thing if you listen to Shure Super 55 then, I think you will dislike it too and will come to same conclusion (17 kHz according its passport, but according to actual graph it has about 11.5-13 kHz, thin low mid and harsh upper mids).
Being semi-retired, I just watch for fun. I had the original but the Procaster is yes more expensive but a much better mic. As a Consultant I have a case with 5 mic's so far one has always been the right one for the talent (The Pod-Mic isn't in the case) It has a purpose it a reasonably good intro mic. If your getting into Podcasting, pick up two with the Rodecaster and your set. Being old I only have one USB Mic for last minutes voiceover/correction (Opt-Cmd-8 in FinalCut) that would happen in editing (It the Earthworks Icon mini). I see the benefit of a combo Mic but you only need one. What Rode is doing is with it virual rodecaster and the USB mic may fit the kids today but I need physical knobs and sliders! To OLD to change...LOL
I like Big Bottom and I cannot lie... lol! Tom, you alluded tot his and I wonder if dual simultaneous XLR and USB output is the reason why the Podmic has two separate ports (as opposed to the NT1 5th that has the super slick combo XLR/USB connector).
Currently have an SM7B and a PodMic with the original Rodecaster Pro and a fethead. Really considering getting the NT1 or one of the Lewitt mics for a bit of a different sound and probably the Rodecaster Duo as I don’t need the giant Rodecaster Pro.
On the handling noise - does it extend to usb cable noise? I have a T-bone mb7-beta which we can say… pays homage to… the pod mic usb. Typing noise seems to go along the usb cable out from the laptop and into the mic.
How's the Rode XDM-100? I read so many bad reviews about it -- Noisy when headphones are plugged into it; a buggy Rode UNIFY software that got many users frustrated. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@tombuck thank you for the advice! very helpful. For the USB versions use on computers, does Podmic provides stronger and more featuers for audio editing ? MV7 may requires editing with other audio editing software? is it true ?
I love the q9u but the handling sound made me get the podmic usb instead but i dont know if I like how it sounds on my voice. The sm7b is my favorite but spending that much on a mic is kind of steep right now. I been messing with the settings and im somewhat satisfied with how the podmic sounds for my voice, like you were saying if it was like 20-30 dollars cheaper I don't think I would be 2nd guessing myself so much to be honest.
Thanks! It's actually one of the original Apple Sport bands from the first Apple Watch. It's held up great over the years! I really wish they still made this color.
Sitting here watching your video, and I your rode ear pads are screaming at me through the screen saying “look at me - You MUST BUY ME TOO! “ lol. Curious where you got them. And are they made of the same material as the original ear pads?
Oh yeah - as always great video, and I can’t wait to get this mic and review it on my channel, I am so far behind with my schedule after some health issues I have to really crank it up to be able to get to the Podmic Usb. Can’t wait!
Hey! great review. I am a complete rookie and so I wanted to know if the "broadcast quality" means it's good for podcasts only. Could it be used for vocals (singing)? Because it appears to be the do it all mic. Even with it's inbuilt DSP EQ and all, plugging it into an speaker via a simple amp would be best for a little live performance.
Tbh the Podmic USB didn’t sound thattttt great imo. I thought the other mics compared were way better for my personal taste, but maybe with EQ it could be a different story. I’ll always be using my SM7B but always enjoy watching!
I'm trying to decide between several mikes and find this attractive because of both interfaces. Can the same effects be done in Logic Pro, if one does not want to use the Rode software packages?
The pod mic gives that congested sound. Not good to listen to for long. The pod mic usb has a similar sound but the difference is not slight, Good video!
Hey Tom, awesome video! Quick question: how do you always make such AWESOME thumbnails?! I’ve been on UA-cam for a year and just now seem to be getting the hang of it, but my thumbnails definitely don’t even come close to yours.
Hello tom been a follower for a long time i have a question for u when i play a sound using the pads and i speak at the same time it get muddy like i cant do both at the same time especially when i use air horn
Would it be possible to EQ the Podmic USB to make it similar sounding to the NT USB+? Really wanted a combo mic but I also prefer the sound of the NT USB+ better
Yes...sort of. You can do a lot with software and mixers (Rode Central is surprisingly powerful when it comes to EQ'ing the PodMic), but I don't think you can totally match the fullness and low end of the NT-USB+ with the PodMic. You can get VERY close, but not exact.
Has to be some post processing with them mics, the bass, the trebs are not like that out the box. Unless mine is dodgy. Your videos always sound great, this sounds pretty much the same as the other videos in terms of processing
You are using Duo. Do you hear any hiss on the headphone output? Mine was quite severe. Also custom routing for the headphone doesn’t work. For example if I turn off system input to headphone, still I can hear the system out. Only fader works. My firmware version is 1.2.2. Do you experience same issue?
I just got the podmic but am getting weird popping/static noise in my headphones . the podmic is connected directly to the PC via USB-C. I do have Rode Unify running to split the channels etc for music, game, system etc. but I'm not sure where the static/popping noise is coming from. It happens when watching videos, playing games etc. Really annoying and hard to diagnose. Any help?
You're correct that the PodMic was intentionally tuned to be more of a mic that Rode leaves to your vices on how you want to EQ your sound. I'm not sure if it's still produced, but Rode has a Procaster USB model in their lineup, albeit no DSP I don't think. Who makes the colored earpads? Thx for the review!
Which is the best USB Mic out of Rodepod Mic USB vs Rode XCM 50 vs Sennheiser USB Profile Mic and have you done a comparison of all 3 anywhere? Thanks in advance
Very eager to try the new Rode Podmic USB! I find the Shure MV7 way too bright and have to boost the low mids and cut the highs to work (more effectively) with my baritone voice. Granted, I use Audacity, so that could be part of the problem. Yours sounded great by comparison, The Samson Q9U is a warmer sounding mic even without any processing,

The Shure SM-7B is A Legend! 🎤
Fantastic video as always! It’s nice to know we both feel similar about this mic 😊
Just so you know, Rode is now selling WS14 windscreen for both the original PodMic and the PodMic USB in various colors ;)
Those cables look awesome in the thumbnail.
Love the Firebirds shirt. Sorry about the Calder Cup Finals, though. Great review.
That was a sad sad night. But I still love them!

Rode sent them and I'm REALLY hoping they make them available for sale and in more colors!
thanks for the review. which one is better for deep voice for voice over ? MV7+ usb or Podmic usb ?
Either will work with a deep voice. The Shure will be bassier, and the PodMic might even things out if the voice is VERY deep.
@@tombuck thank you for the advice! very helpful. For the USB versions use on computers, does Podmic provides stronger and more featuers for audio editing ? MV7 may requires editing with other audio editing software? is it true ?
I like the colors on your channel where you get your color cables??
Rode now has their own XLR cables, which come in realyl great colors and work super well.
@@tombuck Thanks 🙏 so much I’m from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 we follow you,you are a great teacher 👨🏫 God bless you
I love the q9u but the handling sound made me get the podmic usb instead but i dont know if I like how it sounds on my voice.
Can you do an EQ masterclass video for this mic using Rode Central?
Interesting idea! The PodMic definitely needs EQ to sound its best.
I hope the product will be available in a black color variant of the original podmic.
Totally off topic, but I love your blue watch band! Can you tell me the brand and color? Thank you! Now back to learning about the mic. 😂
Thanks! It's actually one of the original Apple Sport bands from the first Apple Watch. It's held up great over the years! I really wish they still made this color.
What a great review!
Thank you kindly!
nicre, love your videos, BTW, where do you get those cool cables, and mic wind covers?
Sitting here watching your video, and I your rode ear pads are screaming at me through the screen saying “look at me - You MUST BUY ME TOO! “ lol. Curious where you got them. And are they made of the same material as the original ear pads?
Oh yeah - as always great video, and I can’t wait to get this mic and review it on my channel, I am so far behind with my schedule after some health issues I have to really crank it up to be able to get to the Podmic Usb. Can’t wait!
I'm wondering the same! I checked the likely culprits already lol. I'm always looking for these things in my own preferred color!
Hey! great review. I am a complete rookie and so I wanted to know if the "broadcast quality" means it's good for podcasts only. Could it be used for vocals (singing)? Because it appears to be the do it all mic. Even with it's inbuilt DSP EQ and all, plugging it into an speaker via a simple amp would be best for a little live performance.
hello, can you tell me what settings you used for podmic usb. thank you very much.
I didn't use any EQ for this review, but I usually just stick with the default PodMic preset in the Rodecaster/Rode Central 👍
Yeah, it sounds terrific on some voices, but not so great on others. I became less of a fan of it on my voice over the years.
Hi Tom! What is this stuff between the Rode arm and the Rode Mic? (I mean this "little black wrist") Thx!
Does this mic offer a “far” setting like the MV7 for people that want to use it outside the video frame?
Has to be some post processing with them mics, the bass, the trebs are not like that out the box. Unless mine is dodgy. Your videos always sound great, this sounds pretty much the same as the other videos in terms of processing
No processing on any of these 🤷🏻♂️
@@tombuck maybe mine was dodgy but never sounded like that.
Question... What is the point of the cable from your headset to the mic?
17:56 as an italian, my fav part of the video
I just got the podmic but am getting weird popping/static noise in my headphones . the podmic is connected directly to the PC via USB-C. I do have Rode Unify running to split the channels etc for music, game, system etc. but I'm not sure where the static/popping noise is coming from. It happens when watching videos, playing games etc. Really annoying and hard to diagnose. Any help?
what is that extension you have on your psa1+?
You're correct that the PodMic was intentionally tuned to be more of a mic that Rode leaves to your vices on how you want to EQ your sound. I'm not sure if it's still produced, but Rode has a Procaster USB model in their lineup, albeit no DSP I don't think. Who makes the colored earpads? Thx for the review!
how did you get the blue pads for your Rode NTH?
Have you got a link or name of the website for the better mv7 pop filter?
reporterstore.com 👍
1:25 weird. Even though you said you rollled off rhe highs in your custom preset, it actually sounds to my ear like more highs were added.
I spent $199 for a Podmic Windscreen. I got a free Podmic USB with my order. Thank you @Rodemic
Great bargain!
ohhhh perfect ! i waited so much this video hehe
May I ask where you got your blue usbc cable from? :)
Rode sent it over since they somehow managed to deduce what my favorite color is (I try to be VERY subtle about it). 😁
@@tombuck haha, that’s awesome! Are those available to purchase online somewhere? I wasn’t able to find them on B&H
Hello Tom, where can I find that flexible extension between the boom arm and the podmic?
It's the Audio Technica AT8459 👍
Thanks!@@tombuck
Which is the best USB Mic out of Rodepod Mic USB vs Rode XCM 50 vs Sennheiser USB Profile Mic and have you done a comparison of all 3 anywhere? Thanks in advance
Very eager to try the new Rode Podmic USB! I find the Shure MV7 way too bright and have to boost the low mids and cut the highs to work (more effectively) with my baritone voice. Granted, I use Audacity, so that could be part of the problem. Yours sounded great by comparison, The Samson Q9U is a warmer sounding mic even without any processing,
MV7 with the SM7B windscreen looks circumcised lol
