I guess music’s influencers from previous generations are never really appreciated or understood. 80s kids weren’t aware of how Duke Ellington or Louis Jordan impacted song writing and recording techniques. Young people not knowing Madonna is more predictable than scary.

Her impact on music for later generations is minimal. I loved her albums. I remember asking all the record stores if the True Blue album had arrived yet. I asked daily until the first store to get it told me the CD’s arrived. I actually still have the copy and it was printed without the title of the album on it. However, she sometimes wrote the basic singing melody but played none of the guitars and keyboards you hear on the songs. All those musical compositions and arrangements were done by professional musicians. Without them the songs she would sing would have gone nowhere. Someone had to make those musical arrangements.
She also kept going downhill as a person as her fame grew. She never got out of that. She kept trying to make albums with current sounding music but her time eventually passed.

Madonna was always trending, changing/reinventing, pushing the boundaries…she influenced fashion, attitude, creative expression, and her songs and videos were always anticipated. She dominated for a long time.
And there’s no doubt that she even captured the attention from hard rockers and metal heads that were closet-fans of hers. They probably have the maturity and guts these days to admit it, but back then probably had to keep it to themselves.

Yall haven't done enough Madonna yet. She was HUGE during the '80s, '90s, and even the '00s. The Beyonce of years past. Music, fashion, dancer, movies, activists, etc. Madonna was a bit controversial in her younger years, though. Popular with the female (all races, didn't matter) crowd and they dressed like her as well. She was kind of pop, funk, new wave, dance music, alternative, electronica, etc. Very versatile during the years. . Very talented, pretty. Brad is right about Monroe vibes. Madonna was like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Cher, Beyonce, Prince, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, etc level (long successful careers, globally popular), shoot, she's nicknamed the "Queen of Pop" for a reason! And also RnR Hall of Fame. Huge concert turnouts, all over radio/tv/media/newspapers/magazines/news, , culture, etc.
And no, Stevie Nicks was more for the older crowd, was more so during the '70s, '80s, some '90s. She's a little older than Madonna and the older crowd (like our parents lol) was more into Stevie Nicks. Nicks also has more of a gypsy and witch vibes, style.
Madonna is for the GenXers. I'd say that Madonna was probably way more popular, global compared to Nicks/Fleetwood Mac (mainly folk rock, hippie stuff). Madonna had way more hits than Nicks if I recall. Spanning decades. Nicks has also been on movies, but not as much as Madonna. Nicks/Fleetwood Mac are also RnR Hall of Famers, like Madonna as well.
Crazy that yall have only done this song, "Material Girl", and a '90s song ( I forget which one, hasn't been uploaded yet..maybe "Frozen", "Erotica", "Beautiful Stranger", "Power of Good-Bye"? I forget which one it was ) so far. Yall need to react to more. I was not a huge Madonna fan, but do recall her being very popular during my youth. Good music and videos. She influenced many many future artists.
Also dated, married many men in the past lol. Sean Penn (actor), Dennis Rodman (NBA player, almost had a baby with him), Carlos Leon (they have a pretty daughter), Guy Ritchie, Ahlamalik Williams (young dude, lol) etc. Young, old, rich, poor, celeb, non-celeb, black, white, Asian, hispanic, whatever, etc. Ha

"Holiday" was the first to crack the Top 40 at #16, followed by "Lucky Star" which reached #4, then this one which reached #10. *ETA* I stand corrected, Lucky Star was released before Borderline, but Borderline peaked first and Lucky Star rode up the charts afterward on Borderline's coattails.

There was no female pop idol like her before who took charged and shaped a brand around her like Madonna. She even reviled MJ for pop supremacy in the 80s and she even surpassed him there after. No doubt, MJ had a couple albums that sold more, but she had broader success like not many others

Girls of all ages worshipped Madonna. She pioneered fashion and performance throughout the 80s from 1983-90 and beyond. The way girls dressed, the millions of bangle bracelets that girls would wear, the hair - everything. She was a megastar for young girls and boys. Then in the late 80s/90s was when she became an icon for all kinds of groups - especially LGBT. To answer Lex question directly yes to everything. It's important to understand she has 38 top 10 singles across 3 decades. Learning about her music is a deep it's a lot. She as artists drastically evolved Era to Era. Every 5 years she might as while be another artist. Her early stuff is more lighter pop stuff synth pop she became a fashion icon was important with MJ in Early MTV. but by the mid 80's she cut her hair and her 3rd album True Blue was more mature and orchestrated sounding. Towards the late 80's and into the 90's she became more alterative, meaningful and she took big artistic risk. "I'm a breathless" is basically a jazz album. "bedtime stories" is R&B album, "Ray of light" is experimental EDM. and Exotica is well Exotica.
I want yall watch "La Isla Bonita", "Oh Father" "take a bow", "Frozen", "vogue", etc. just to get artistic range, I think Lex will like "Live to Tell"

Madonna was huge in the 80s and early 90s. Her music style was copied by many. She was an adequately talented vocalist, not a lot of range, but quite good so long as she stayed in her range. She was a fantastic dancer as well. She had a sense of fashion that combined with her attitude created a storm where tons of girls across the world did all they could to look like her. You take all of that and she was attractive enough to pull it all together, and you have a superstar. Her greatest talent though, wasn't on the stage, but was her business talent. She knew what she wanted, how she wanted to get it, and she knew how to negotiate with the best of them to make it all happen. You couldn't turn your head then without seeing her, hearing her, or seeing her influence somewhere.
