Valerie June: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Short of seeing her live and in person, this is the best way to encounter Valerie June's heartfelt sound. Her new album Pushin' Against a Stone is terrific, but when I first heard that voice unadorned, I was hooked. The same may happen to you.
Valerie June is a singular performer with an array of singing styles. Sometimes she's channeling an old male voice; at other times, she channels a younger woman or even a child. Her music is steeped in tradition. The striking Tennessee singer - on its own, her hair could pass for sculpture - can sing the blues or gospel or country or a blend that sounds like nothing else. She learned how to sing during 18 years of church, but the "old man's voice" comes from deep inside in unexpected ways. Prepare to be surprised, and to become Valerie June's newest fan. --BOB BOILEN
Set List
"Workin' Woman Blues"
"Rain Dance"
"Somebody To Love"
Credits
Producers: Bob Boilen, Denise DeBelius; Editor: Becky Harlan; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait; Videographers: Parker Miles Blohm, Denise DeBelius
I never comment on videos, but I played a music festival last night, and Valerie June was next up after us. I have no words. Okay, I do: love, light, grace, joy. She held the audience in her hand, and hugged each and every one with her voice. New fan for life.
She is amazing! I want to see her live so badly...
@@twebster179 this Covid has to end. I need to see her also
Gonna see her at the Mill Valley Music Festival in May
Not only is she incredibly talented, her personal style is rad!
Thank you writers of P-Valley (S2:E6 -Savage) for introducing Valerie June
to an audience of viewers who may not otherwise may have known her music, her voice, her style. Fan for life.
Exactly!!! She is brilliant an unique. She should be a big star.
How she went under my radar for so many years I'll never know. Now I'll never forget. Thanks Val
Agreed!!!
I could watch her for hours. she is something so rare and genuine and lovely.
Such a voice: unique, authentic, southern and a bee charmer for sure.
Tiny Desk has grown to the age that it has classics. This concert of Valerie June for sure is one of these classics!
truth be told
To be fair
Shes taking me back, back. I did a final in college 18 years ago on how hymnals, gospel, country, and blues were are connected and she sounds EERILY similar to field hymnals that African Americans used to sing during slavery while working in the fields.
I've got the working man's blues right now but this is putting a smile on my face... hell, this is so good I just might even do a rain dance and find somebody to love today. Thanks NPR and Val.
This is some of the best 10 minutes a human can spend watching something.
And the look she gives to someone at 3:25 makes me believe in God.
It hasn't been since Tracy Chapman, that I've enjoyed a folk artist so much. Thank you for sharing your talent.
I swear you took the words out of my mouth.
She's kind of like a mix between Chapman and Macy Gray. The mix of bluegrass and soul in her music is such a joy to listen to!
@Marcy Wells Leyla McCalla is very good.
I do love her but put Rhinnan Giddens in there
Yes.
I just fell in love with a voice on Spotify, then came to put a face with that voice. Now I’m head over heals.
love this old root sound. Great to hear a young artist pull from that tradition and bring it into this fast moving high tech world.
Shes got an old soul....and a sweet, sweet heart.
Somebody To Love just about breaks your heart....and she gives 100% of herself. Thank you Ms June.
I just wonder what Dolly Parton would say (or do) if she heard this woman's songs and her singing them. How could she not love the sound--the soul--the energy and life a lot like Dolly grew up in. I know all about that tiny, rural life.
In an interview posted on his website, Bob Dylan said he’d been listening to June, whose latest album, The Order of Time, is a blend of spacey hippie soul, blues and folk with June’s pinched, modern-Appalachian voice at the center. “I lost it,” June says of the Dylan shout-out.
Devin Baur I first discovered Valerie June in 2013, I love her sound and voice so much. I feel like she does not get the credit, nor the exposure, in mainstream music that she deserves.

I'm completely with you. She's quite a new discovery for me but I think she's fantastic.
I love her hair, her music, her voice, her soul
+Angel N Scott Ain't nothing pretty 'bout the hair
+beenn15 She didn't SAY it was "pretty".. she said she loved it. YOU may only love stuff that's PRETTY, but many of us love stuff that is striking, or unique, or majestic, or outrageous or any number of things that aren't "PRETTY" You know, like loving a rock song or the smell of a campfire.
+beenn15 We aren't all interested only in pretty things, princess.
Pretty is subjective. It's gorgeous to me
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, she is gorgeous. Her hair is gorgeous. I love her display of black pride she is magical
STANDING OVATION. She is amazing.
I'm in love. Takes me back to the beautiful time before I was born, and to places I've never been.
I love her voice and I'm mostly mainstream hip hop R&B fan but there's something so organic and simple about her voice I think it's beautiful.
That last song really touched me; got me tearing up like a baby.
Listened to this 2 years ago and my feelings haven't changed. This is one of my favorites.
Her voice is so beautiful
I love Valerie June’s music, and that she’s true to herself. (Just as Shakespeare wrote, “To thine own self be true.”)
Reclaiming folk music!
I feel like im listening to Joan Osborns ''what if God was one of us'' mixed with tracy chapmans ''fast car'' with a total 1930s porch sitting feel.I cant explain it but she is incredible! She is so different. Can we please have more of this!
Ive been enjoying the UA-cam videos, and purchased her music so I can be supportive, and sing with her and have fun without embarrassing myself or anyone else. ha ha She's awesome. Love her!
I come here when I need inspiration ‼️Thank you Valerie June 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾🦋🦋🦋🦋
i've seen her twice, she's the BOMB!!!! her cds as well as the wandering are worth having....simply supreme!!!
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Did some of you forget this piece of wisdom?
She is beautiful, original, and humble.
2 thumbs up for Valerie June.
I've seen mostly positive comments though. Really like her voice, as you said, original. Makes me think of something like Hell or High Water soundtrack. Awesome.
I love that she doesn’t need anyone to help her perform
This my first time listening valerie june. I have to say at the beginning of the song "Somebody To Love" I got tears in my eyes. Her voice is so so gentle, yet so strong. I love it when someone can touch your ears, brain, heart & soul with their voice. :)
I think this is her best recording of Raindance. It has a faster tempo than the other versions I've come accross.
listening to her on Hardly Strictly Bluegrass right now - that voice, you're so right - HOOKED! Diggin her guitar style, tone, etc. Thanks for sharing this Tiny Desk Concert!!
this chick is counnntry, at times she sounds like a cartoon character mockn country music..but I couldn't stop listening because she's so unique..she play the hell out that guitar!! But when started playing the banjo, I envisioned her sitting on the porch singing as the sun goes down 😀👏👏👏
The rhythm of her guitar in the fist song is crazy! Awesome!
The first note of each song, I'm immediately transported to my great grandparent's farm as a child. I love Junie!
I enjoyed everything about this lady and performance
So the 2nd song Rain Dance totally works... I cried, cried, cried sitting in my big city apartment so far from (like Dolly) my Tennessee Mountain home.
The great tradition continues: stories about a life sung from the heart. Her first song has the feel and sound of sub Saharan Africa
Unique. Oh man, the feels...
this is the best music i have heard in a while
Valerie June is my new favorite.. She just makes me smile. Pure, natural, beautiful, organic... I could listen all day long. :-)
This wonderful woman's music found itself on UK TV! I was so shocked to hear her but I'm very proud. Her music is amazing and she deserves so much credit.
I heard her on that show Fresh Meat, she is amazing!
Sohil Naik what epp, can you remember?
slippytiger Fresh Meat: Series 3 - Episode 4
million-dollar talent and a million-dollar smile!
I don´t used to comment, but thanks NPR and Valerie June for amazing feelings about time and music.
We need more of June! Her voice is so.......Beautiful!
I just fell in love with this woman.
She's a force of nature! ... I'm going to see her perform next month in a converted church in Cork City Ireland just 2 minutes walk from my house :-D
I thought she sounded like an Irish folk singer. Hope you enjoyed the show
Something truly special about that "Rain Dance" song. @2:53
Love her, she's one of a kind. Such an individual and (sorry, so pretty).
Still amazes me how rotten people can be on social media. You just have to wonder why a person is compelled to state their negative opinion. You'd think they would just move on if an artist doesn't appeal to their taste. Btw, keep playing your songs in your own special way beautiful lady🌷
THIS IS HOW GOD INTENDED HER TO WRITE HER MUSIC AND SING IT FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF ALL. THOSE COMPLAINING ARE SPOILT BY TOO MUCH COMMERCIAL MUSIC, RECORD SALES AND THE CHARTS.
I came here from her current Ted Talk and I would love to see a second Tiny Desk. She hooked me with Love You Once Made, and now Astral Plane is my inner Artist's Mantra.
I absolutely love her. It took a couple listens to get used to her voice but now i can't stop listening to her. And i get to see her in concert in a month.
She's very pretty too!
Honey she’s BEAUTIFUL!
She has a Blue Grass kind of voice.
Totally fell in love with her voice and raw performance. Thanks Tiny Desk.
I know I've seen Valerie June somewhere else - I watch a lot of music videos so I cannot recall; Love her voice: the tone, inflections - close my eyes & I am transported to 1930s
She so awesome. Just heard V June first time this morning, haven't stop listening to HER.
Just saw her live tonight in Austin, TX - amazing! I had no idea who she was before today, but I can truly say she sings from her soul to yours!
She's such an amazing artist and refreshing at the same time.
She's cool! I love her tone! As a musician/singer, I've been trying to expand my listening library and delve deeper into other styles of music, and I have been scouring UA-cam to find some new people to listen to, and what are the odds that I run across this?! Lol. Amazing! Thanks NPR Music. :-)
all I want is more more more! I adore Valerie June and love the light she spreads.
Wow, this is why I love channels like NPR, I find so many great artists! This lady is a joy for my ears! And eyes!

Yes......her voice is an aquired taste but I dig it......I like to her sisters singing various genres of music. And she can play that guitar. What a beauty

Just so love seeing and listening to very interesting performers
wow....just wow! So glad to come across this beautiful sister... Love her music & her style
Valerie is truly amazing; just discovered her through an article on the Martin Guitars journal (btw, that's a 000-15M). Loving all the package, her compositions are great, and I get a Billie Holiday vibe on her singing and voice that is just wonderful...!
Wow just WOW!!!! Tiny desk does it again... I'd buy her cd & take a scenic drive... beautiful! ❤😊
Beautiful, original and inspiring.......be yourself,
'Are you watching the moon rising in the darkness of life' awesome lyrics, brilliant woman! 👏❤️
