- Clean and distorted rhythm comparison between DiMarzio Evolution (passive) and Seymour Duncan JB SH-4 (passive) pickups for electric guitar on the bridge position. Settings are the following:
GUITAR
Tuning: Eь / D#
Strings: D'Addario EXL140 (010-052 gauge)
AMP
Clean: EVH 5150 III profile (Kemper Profiler)
Distortion: Peavey 5150 profile (Kemper Profiler)
RECORDING TECHNIQUE:
- One centered mono track per pickup.
- Same config and EQ for both.

JB is the Tube screamer of pickups. You either hate it or are hopelessly in love with its sound. It really does come into its own when things get distorted.
Good analogy. I've never been a fan of production JBs. The best JB I ever owned was an old handwound model, probably produced around '79 according to a tech used in the 80s. It came stock in an old Charvel I bought used for $100 bucks back in the day. Sounded great. But that was in part due to the mellowed rough cast magnet. Besides that, I've always used DiMarzio. I could never get into Duncans because they are just too trebly and harsh for me. I find DiMarzios have a broader tonal spectrum. My favorite models are the Tone Zone, Air Zone, Super Distortion, Super 3, Norton, PAF Pro, Fred and Mo Joe. But I use the Tone Zone 98% of the time. I played all those clubs on the Sunset Strip in the 80s. I was a very shreddy young guitarist in those days. The JB was ubiquitous, but so was the Super Distortion, X2N, PAF Pro, MegaDrive, etc. The big issue I've always had with the JB is that it's too trebly and harsh on the high end and the low end gets very muddy with bad note separation. It's a temperamental pickup. If you're gonna use Duncans I say go for the Full Shred or Screamin' Demon for their clarity, or the Custom SH-5, Pegasus or Alternative 8. Otherwise, they all still have that cloying high end I can't deal with.

Love my Washburn Idols but they come with SD pickups. I bought one with an Evolution in the neck and a Tone Zone in the bridge.😍😍😍😍 Its a classic ROCK MACHINE..
Replacing a couple of my other Idols with this set up as soon as my luthier returns from vacation..
Evolution is so good, after so many years, i can't imagine myself playing another pickup

The Evolution has better notes seperation and sounds more upfront to my ears. The JB isn't bad neither but my vote goes to Evolution though.

Both sounding nice. The DiMarzio was brighter throughout. I prefer the warmer sounds of Seymour. Chain saw setting is simply offensive regardless of how its achieved.
JB is just too 'thuddy' for me and lacks harmonic sparkle. So the evolution takes it I reckon. That said, I put an Evo 2 in my Jem and its even nicer than Evolution.

I kind of like JB with the gain because it has a bit more high end which probably works better in the mix but I can see why Steve Vai made Evolution that way, its smoother so probably works well with his lead-heavy style
The evolution is more throater.... sounds better to my ears.
Just get DiMarzio for Neck and Seymour for the Bridge. You're all set. Cleans on the neck Heavy on the Bridge
JB sounds very fizzy and muddy with gain and dark and boomy with cleans. Evolution totally wins.
IMHO JB is the most overrrated pickup.
Jb sounded better clean had a slightly warmer fuller tone. Distorted they sound pretty close to identical close enough to not make a difference to me. Jb wins.
Just throw a dimarzio super distortion or a seymour duncan JB in the bridge and Bob’s your uncle…rock on 👍
The DiMarzio Evolution is excellent. It's superior.
For hard rock and metal, the Evolution is clearly the better pickup - tighter, clearer, more ballsy, has authority. I didn't even listen to the clean tones because who cares about cleans on a bridge humbucker ...

Evolution for me all day long. The sh4 has this harsh lower mid spike. Just saying.
I played a JB for a really long time and it always sounded like a semi cocked wah that i couldnt get. Mid ramge was weird like you said

I noticed a negligible difference in the evolution and the JB.
2 x listened. The emporer is wearing no clothes. Snake oil. To me. 5% difference.
In a live band situation/ no different. Just get your chops together. Play mr scary or no quarter or always with you always with me or King of the Blues ( Moore). Note for note. Tone for tone. Vibrato for vibrato, and nobody’s going to care.

Clear Evolution, disto SH4, solos equality.
The Evolution has slightly better distortion, but the JB's cleans are far superior, JB wins overall.
