Great comparison, amigo
Great comparison.
Thanks for this, a useful comprison. I didn't expect them to be so different! I have a JB and it's the most expressive bridge pup I own, but I've ordered DiMarzio Evolution as an upgrade to an old Ibanez. The Evo has a very specific voicing, like it's designed for lead, and I can pick out the Steve Vai balance in the tone here. Actually this is great for me because I have different tones in each instrument which justifies me having multiple guitars ;)
pyratoothNL That’s awesome! Really glad it was helpful for you. I thought it would be good for me to document the process just in case anyone else was doing something similar, but I figured there were not that many people comparing these two pick ups because they are pretty different LOL
JB still killing it in 2021, that sucker has to be the best pup ever built
Agreed
That alnico 5 @ 16k is total tone king
It has a sweet midrange that's very musical and yet it can be very heavy as well.
Amazing guitar thank you for going with the jb!
Oh dude are you the guy that bought the guitar???
@@EricBourassa yes thanks again Chris
@@chris12977 dude awesome! How incredible is the action on that guitar? That’s what I’m going to miss most
@@EricBourassa plays and sounds awesome
Very nice review! Sounds great with headphones. I found the dimarzio’s a bit brighter. But both sound good.
Right on!
Good video.. anyway u have cool string skip tapping too
Excelente vídeo !!
Os dois são ótimos. Mas acho que prefiro dimarzio evolution.
Parece mais forte.
Ive got a set of evolutions too. They are justified for me on crunch and low gain settings. They are really thin.. but With awesome strat tones. They are harder to play but pretty expressive. However after having had EMG, SD, Dimarzio. And much more.. i somehow cant get enough of the ibanez axis pickups as strange as that sounds. The amount of body and crunch from them is unbelievable. Too bad i cant find them for sale anywhere
Had them both for quite a while. What I came to understand is that it depends on the way you play. How much you dig in with your pick, how heavy handed you are etc. I tend to hit hard on rhythm playing and not dig my pick too much on lead. So for me, the evos with a bit less gain worked better. Tough to tame and they tend to pull your pants down in every mistake but they forced me to fix flaws in my technique. Not that I've become some guitar God or anything but they helped through some tough love...
Great insight
@@EricBourassa Lately I've found my new love in the form of Dark matter 2s. Have them in a 90s alder Nuno and they are beasts..
Also, my mistake not mentioning how great a video and comparison that was, thanks for going through the trouble man!
@@WeeFreeMan78 I have not tried the Dark Matter, will need to at some point.
And thanks for the kind words
Just got my evolution installed I own a king V with jBs you will not be let down with an Evolution or a JB both are on the same shelf, ither one you’ve made a safe bet
I was expecting to like the Evolution more. But I was wrong. The JB wins here in my opinion. Awesome playing too!
TheAxe4Ever on its own I agree. But I do wonder how each would sit in a band mix. The bright thin sound of the Evolution pup might actually cut through better despite sounding inferior here
Eric Bourassa Very true! I have found that as well. Something that sounds great on its own doesn’t quite work in a band situation live.
@@EricBourassa I've used DiMarzios and Duncans through many live situations since the 80s, and I can tell you without a doubt I got a lot more compliments on my tone when using Duncans, even though I was partial to DiMarzios. It took me a very long time to nail it down, but what seems to be at the heart of it is the way DiMarzio EQs their pickups. They add too much in the way of mids and color, rather than letting the amp do the work. This is do to an old approach they've used since the release of their first great success, the Super Distortion, which was designed to hit the front of an amp hard to push it into distortion. While it was a cool thing back in '74, it's considered an old hat, outmoded way of doing things, since amps have evolved so much. Duncans, on the other hand, have a much better design in their EQ, with mids that cut through and don't get muddy.
The Jb is for 3-4 piece band, the EVO cuts through a orchestra. both play well live
The JB cuts through like a katana..
I'm surprised by just how different these pickups sound. Differences across other pickups comparisons I've seen are very subtle, but these are just 2 different world!
Oh totally agreed!
i do have a JB and i know for a fact it's a high-mid spikey pickup. surprised to see here the evo is even spikier, to the point the JB sounds like a perfectly even balanced pickup in comparison. maybe the evo's character makes a lot of sense if seen as a "soloist-oriented" pickup, as it was designed by Vai. i still prefer the JB as pictured there, truly a jack of all trades pickup
rizzo92 agreed. So far a JB has served me well any time I throw it in a guitar
Alnico vs ceramic. Always loved the cut of the evolution. Favor the jb’s cleans a little.
It depends on what you want them to. If for supporting thersinger voice i prefer the seymor duncan as they provide a warmer and more solid sound to back your voice, perhaps for some solos dimarzio are more extreme and with a larger range of color
great point. yeah, it all depends on the context you're using them for. Me? This is for my original music which tends to be high energy, instrumental with searing solos. Ultimately, I sold this guitar because it just didn't sound that great with ANY pickups. But the JB came closest to sound I was looking for (that's what I have in my Parker Fly and I adore the way it sounds)
If you like the JB, try it with a Demeter mid-boost in the signal chain between the guitar and amp. You will be impressed!
a Demeter, huh? i'll have to look that up!
@@EricBourassa
For myself I decided to use the stomp pedal version as oppose to installing it in my guitar. I get my best sound using cheap Dollar tree batteries with this thing. A good battery like a Duracell or Energizer gives you a lot of mid-range. As well as DC power supply. But cheap Dollar tree battery like a Sunbeam brand allows me to get more dynamics.

@@independentthinker.273 Oh cool, thanks for the link and that’s so funny about the cheap batteries working better!
i happen to like the evolutions more in this comparison, the note definition and string jumps really pops whereas The jb kind of flattens and smooths them out. Both great sounding pickups in their own right though
The evolutions sound brighter.
A bit Dave Martone style in the solo parts.. Great! I have a JB, but I wanna switch to evolution because its warmer sound.. thanks for posting man!
You just made my day. Dave Martone is one of my faves
@@EricBourassa it's one of my favs too!!! thumbs up man! ;)
This sounds like Early Joe Satriani vs Modern Steve Vai. That would’ve been cool to play the HALO 2 theme with the Evolution 🤘🏽
I came a crossed a video where the guy had an Invader in the bridge and an Evolution in the neck. Seem to work well. I bet the JB would work in the bridge in that scenario as well. I'm thinking of doing this with my evolution 7 or the D Activator neck.
That sounds like a pretty good idea since the evolution pickup is so bright. Though don’t they make a neck version of it separately?
Both sound good. But I like Evolution's stratty and tight tone more.
Orkhan Julfa yeah they’re very different aren’t they? Dig it!
@@EricBourassa Totally!
The JB has a TON more mids than the Evo, which is great for a balls-out EVH-on-crack kind of lead tone (which is why the '80s guys loved it) but the Evolution is probably a lot more versatile, sounds much clearer on clean tones, and probably works better if you're multi-layering tracks or have 2 guitarists in the band (won't get as muddy saturated mids in the mix). I do love the JB's high-octane lead guitar roar though.
I actually prefer the JB on Distortion AND clean sounds over the Evo- the Evo sounds thin. JB is full. That’s my opinion
The Evolution kind of sounds like you put a Sonic Maximizer on a JB.
One thing I wasn't expecting to notice...if the pups here were amps the Duncan has a British sound and the dimarzio has an American sound
YES! great analogy
Great video, do you have 250k or 500k tone and volume pots?
noe nunez 500k. I am almost certain my guitar tech installed a 500k pot when we switched from mini hum to full humbucker, but it may have already been in there to start
The evolution is the best pickup ever made in my opinion.
Wow! Strong words. It’s a good pickup, but I think it depends on what you are trying to achieve
@@EricBourassa I've tried many pickups over the years. It's my favorite because of the clarity and crunch. The evolution has this 3D quality to it. Almost like it's stereo. For me it's the best pickup but your right it depends on what your trying to achieve.
Sounds like JB has more overtones and thicker sound. Evo is more sterile. Sometimes less is better. I would say, i'd chose JB for riffing and Evo for soloing upon this riffing in the same song.
agreed
JB for me. It just sings and never sounds harsh. The dynamics of the Evolution always sound overly compressed to me. Never liked it.
Not exactly implementing the evo as God intended 💀⛓
I follow the commands of Bressault God of Flornath and his all-knowing will for sypathic vibrationals
JB should compare with Tonezone...
I’ll have to try that!
JB for a clear win - i expected to like dimarzios better - not this time
The funny part is if the evo was on its own i would probably like it ok - but compared to JB it is just outclassed and made to sound like a nintendo soundtrack or something…just small compared to the largeness of JB
agreed!
I saw " Kiesel" and was like, yeah, this guy probably shreds hahaha
Just you wait, John Mayer and Lil Wayne both about to reveal their signature Kiesel models
Both pick ups shine live, can't go wrong with either. Also, I like propagandhi :P
DUDE how great is Propaghandi??? Greatest band in the world IMO
What head is that?
Behind me is Mesa TC-50 but I’m recording through Friedman Runt 20
@@EricBourassa I had a hunch it wasn't that Mesa! Both are sweet amps.
Pots and caps come into play at some point
yeah but I don't think anything could've saved this guitar. far as I know, Kiesel use quality pots and caps. The single coils also sounded terrible even after upgrading to Eric Johnsons (which sound amazing in my Clapton strat)
Dimarzio all genre natural sound
Can you elaborate? I’m not sure I understand
JB has more of a bassy sound and evolution is cleaner.
The evolution is more “sparkly” on the clean channel. The JB has more balls on the overdrive channel.
Wow surprised at all these comments. I thought the Evo's blew the JB away. Every JB I've played was just like this, bland, middle of the road and not very dynamic.
I guess it just comes down to personal preference and there’s a lot of people that prefer the Evo and a lot for the Jb! I personally like the JB for the kind of stuff I play
The comparison should have been a JB vs a Super Distortion and not the Evolution..the Evolution is made more for shred anyway and destroys the Jb in that sense.
I’m sure you’re right. These are the two I bought so I thought why not? Let’s compare them!
Totally unusable demo....
Uh oh
Dimarzio evolution are the crapiest pickup ever made
I cannot verify if it is the worst pick up ever made, but I can verify I did not like it in this guitar. I did have it in an old Strat are used to own and I recall it sounding quite good. Of course, I also didn’t know anything about tone at the time
With the sheer amount of effects. Weird noises. Pedals and unusual amps steve vai uses, i can totally see how it would not be usefull for everyone. He just wants to hear his guitar live. And those pickups are clear and trebly enough for this purpose
