David Bowie - Lady Stardust - live 1972 (rare footage / 2017 edit)

- Rare footage of David Bowie performing 'Lady Stardust' at the Rainbow Theatre, London in August 1972, as well as clips from other performances in 1972 and some backstage footage from 1973 - all shot presumably by the great Mick Rock. (Look out for Angie Bowie in the crowd shot at 1.17s)
Lady Stardust is believed to be a homage to Marc Bolan and although it is not visible in the video, it is said that Marc's face was projected onto the screen behind Bowie whilst he performed this song at the Rainbow.
I initially created this edit in June of last year, putting it together from clips derived from various sources. I held off uploading it back then because I was always hopeful that some better quality footage would turn up to replace some of the rougher quality clips I was using. The excellent documentary 'The Last Five Years' included significant upgrades to some of the clips - so at last I feel I can upload my edit (after a very late night of reworking it). The footage is synched to a 1972 radio session version of the song.
It feels appropriate to finally upload it on what would have been Bowie's 70th birthday.
A slightly different edit of the song (including some footage not seen here) can be found on my Vimeo channel here:
vimeo.com/1985...
I hope you enjoy it.
Ziggy saved my life. Only Bowie people would understand this.
his works saved mine too
Helped me see through the darkness in such a bad era of my life
You re not alone.
Me too, my friend
i understand
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
by one of the most beautiful men every created :p
While we are lucky to have so many photos and clips of Bowie's performances, we are really fortunate that people like you Mr Sussex are so skilled and devoted to bringing back the best in a coherent form. Thankyou.
Amazing
Not alone..
🥰
Amen!
Thank You Mr Sussex. ❤️X
Beautiful 🖤🍻☮🔮💙🧡
this song was about his friend marc bolan...they had a love hate relationship but what a pair of legends..lady stardust was marc bolan..two legends now gone, but their music will be forever..r,i,p my heroes.
My absolute favorite Bowie song. It totally encompasses what he was about back at that time. Miss him now
absolutely
This songs makes me cry inside because it was written for Marc Bolan,my biggest idol. I kinda identify myself with Marc due to the fragile personality. Marc looked so confident but deep inside he was very sensitive. I know it because he really felt very bad when T. Rex stopped having that huge success that they had in 1971-1972. He was quite depressed and fell into the cocaine addiction,he even said "Glam Rock is dead" in an interview. That was very painful because the father of Glam Rock announced its death, the death of something that he created and didn't last long. But for our luck Bowie,Sparks,Suzi Quatro,Slade,Hello,Racey and others kept Glam Rock alive for a while.
This comment right here made me tear up a bit. Why doesn't it have more likes?
RIP David Bowie. One of the greatest men to have ever lived.
He’s still with us just not in physical form anymore in spirit form now.
Greatest musician not men. Greatest men include all the men who went to war
Makes me cry, such a beautiful song for Marc Bolan
This song is more like reggae here but don't get me wrong. It's beautiful 👍👍👍👍
If it’s not sad enough.. I wasn’t sure if it was for Marc Bolan, who I was so crazy about, both his music and gorgeous looks. Between Bowie and Bolan, I am so sad sometimes. What losses to this lonely world, both great 👍artists that will ever be replaced😿✌️👼
This song was dedicated to Marc Bolan of T Rex.
Really?
fuck. this song is beautiful, this intro is one of the best ever
People stared at the makeup on his face
Laughed at his long black hair, his animal grace
The boy in the bright blue jeans
Jumped up on the stage
And lady stardust sang his songs
Of darkness and disgrace
And he was alright, the band was all together
Yes he was alright, the song went on forever
And he was awful nice
Really quite out of sight
And he sang all night long
Femme fatales emerged from shadows
To watch this creature fair
Boys stood upon their chairs
To make their point of view
I smiled sadly for a love I could not obey
Lady stardust sang his songs
Of darkness and dismay
Oh how I sighed when they asked if I knew his name
Though they was alright, the band was all together
Yes he was alright, and the song went on forever
He was awful nice
Really quite paradise
He sang all night long
Oh yeah
its about marc bolan
Love that song......
Ohhhh I thought it was “up all night” not “awfully nice”. Thanks
Hogwash
It’s crazy if one thinks about it. ANY one else who died at 69, would’ve been graciously grieved and had The typical out-pour of what would be that persons sorta check-out from this world, and flowers, cards and other pleasantries would be left, in showing their support for their demise.
However...with Bowie- NOBODY was wanting to accept it, they felt as ho how could he have left us when he seemed as tho he was still an active part of us?! We all just still miss the crap out of him and can’t believe he’s been gone for 2.5yrs. already. The world seems like it has a huge void with/o him.
I’ve never heard of this type of mass outpouring of love and despair over the loss of him. He was truly so special.
I can’t believe he’s gone and I think we also lost one of the last true geniuses of our time. He had a wide, mass knowledge of just about everything and was absolutely a “giver” AND A DOER... any chance he could.
The world sure is a lot dimmer w/o him 😢. He’ll always be the one and only- Starman.😢🙏🏻✝️😇
Very well said and your very right their was something very different with bowie than the others one thing he was,'t greedy like a lot of rock stars and so down to earth in all ways you here so many good storys of bowie and am proud people thought that way of him and he's been 47yrs in my life and a miss him.to me he is just taking a long break away thats the way my heart wants the think.he was one of a kind like you said.steve
But.. but.. he is NOT gone. everytime we listen to him, think of him, sing the songs, we bring him back ;)
he would have been 70 today. What a legend!
I am almost 69 He Kikked
I miss him so much, when he passed on, something died inside of me.
73 now.. i miss him so much♡
74.. two days ago.. still miss him so much
He has been dead for 5 years
brilliant human being.
Lesley O He is more than human.
Holy crap this is the first video I've ever seen him singing this song, this is my favorite Bowie tune.
They’re all good 😊 tunes, man. (Try Sorrow ☹️ on Pinups).
this was the first song I listened to after he passed away. this song still makes me tear up when I hear it. while Bowie may have been thinking of someone else when writing this song, it clearly describes Bowie to a T.
He wrote this song about Marc Bolan actually, the song kinda sounds like a memorial to Marc nowadays because it's a balled with reminiscing like lyrics and Marc tragically died in 1977 when he was the passenger in a car accident when he was in the middle of orchestrating his comeback. The lyrics, "his song went on forever" really emphasizes the impact he made on rock during the early 70s that would carry for generations.
David was always All Right. He will live in my heart forever.
Happy Birthday David Bowie
My favourite Bowie song, Lady Stardust. Gina.
What a beautiful creature!
Bowie's love for Marc Bolan of T REX. Bolan was "Lady Stardust".
Omg T.Rex!? Thank you! I never knew this (:
rip bolan rip bowie
@@alexspsychedelicchannel2521 the song was originally called a song for marc..long before marcs death
They knew each other since 1964, there was a rumoured relationship between the two.
@@1183newman And Bolan's last performance was with Bowie on Marc's British TV show (It's here on UA-cam). Bolan was the worse for drugs and fell off the stage. He died in a car crash just days later.
i can't believe such a wonderful person left us... he was so cute and kind and very talented, a pure genius
David bowie my heroe :')
My hero too. But not just for one day. Forever.
@@stefannilsson4608 beautifully said...
david bowie and marc bolan were the biggest stars of the early 70,s and they were good friends from before they became famous..its great that bowie payed homage to his friend in lady stardust.it was a shame marc bolan died so young..a great talent lost and him and bowie were just starting to do songs together. i.e sanding next to you when marc fell of the stage during the marc show....who knows what the finished version would have been like.the songs them to legends could have made would have been classics. two friends...two legends...rest in peace guys..love always.
One of my favorite Bowie songs, maybe one of my favorite songs of all time. This is amazing! Thank you.
This is the best version... Trevor Bolder on the bass.... Argh... This is as good as it gets...
bowie and bolan my all time heroes..r.i.p the magic you both give me as a teenage can never be replaced...i wish the generation of today had guys like you to get inspired too. good fun rock,n roll..thanks for making my teenage years a blast

Well, his music is always here with us.
Has no juice without Mick Ronson's guitar the entire orchestra can't get the power
There are too few live renditions of this song. Thanks for posting, Mr Sussex.
One of the greatest songs ever sung/written. Genius...
Thank you for putting this up. I was at the Rainbow gig (and down the front towards the end), one of my all time favourite gigs. I also got sent to work for Mainman as a temp when I was 17 for a couple of months, special times. Thanks for bringing the memories back to life, I hope you have some more gems tucked away. Do you know if there is any footage of the Save the Whale gig at the Festival Hall? I will never forget David, Lou Reed and Rono in a line playing Im Waiting for the Man and WhiteLight/White Heat! Now that would be serious footage!
Thanks for sharing. Fiona
Fab memories...
❤ ilove this song actually the entire album❤ miss David.
Femme fatales emerged from shadows to watch this creature…
Thanks Mister Sussex, it is lovely.
Thank you.
halloween 2022, still the most perfect being whom ever existed.....

Seeing this just reminds me of how incredibly attractive David was as Ziggy Stardust! Mr Sussex! Thank you! Yet again you make this genius shine in all his glory, and with such panache! Well done you! Heartfelt gratitude and love to you. A smiling John Harris Xxx
Happy 70 th birthday David Bowie
Lovely video, and perfect timing for David Bowie's birthday!
bowie helped me in the toughest points of my life where i was in doubt of my own identity and gender. safe to say two-three years later, this song has been a comforting hug to me, compared to back then where i was crying with tremendous guilt and confusion. thank you bowie for helping me to find peace, im forever in debted to you
Nah that's me RN. I am very confused about my identity and gender, also crying with confusion ;-;
i got soo emotional with this lyrics, it describes my soul in my happy times wen i am having fun with someone i love in that moment "and he was alright... "
Another masterpiece! Thank you for these memorable artful edits.
Awesome ... Great work ...Thanks so much ... One that I always wanted to see David perform live.
The album version on Ziggy is one of the best songs on the greatest album ever recorded IMO.

The beginning footage of him preparing his forehead is visual poetry.

Sussex I don't know how this song don't have an official video.
But for me this really deserves to be the official version
And of course this is a very rarely live played song so it gives it a special value.

This is SO F.CKING great. That is why I am in love with DB for 50 years and always will be
GOD.

i second that. Thanks Mr Sussex.I like that name😀
His homage to Bolan
Thank you, just beautiful, at the beginning when David stares at the camera through the mirror, awwww, my heart, those gorgeous eyes shown as only he saw them.
This is nicely put together, thanks for posting.
Im 63...I was and still am Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom, and Aladdin Sane... Bowie the God of music PERIOD
That smile... magical. Been under his spell since first seeing that smile 28 years ago. I was 7 years old.
I'm glad I discovered your channel ... beautiful work.
R.I.P. David Bowie ... R.I.P. Marc Bolan.
💝💝
Welcome back!!
Thanks. I'm hoping to be more active with uploads than I have been of late. My Mac gave up the ghost and refused to start up. I've had to buy a new one and am slowly getting things back together...
Per chi, come me, segue Bowie dagli inizi della sua splendida carriera questi video sono delle perle rare....grazie...love Bowie forever
Amazing ! R.i.p. David
At first my favorite songs in this album was Five Years and Moonage Daydream. Now Lady Stardust is my favorite, especially David’s voice when he sings “to make their point of viewwwwooo...” 1:24 and “I smiled sadly for a love I could not obey” a line with so much weight!
Thx for the footage, the songs of Bowie always lift spirits
I love this song since I was 15, now I am 50...Thank You mr. Sussex
sublime bowie
I wish I could have been there at this show
wonderful David. incredible song.... i miss you every single day

Omg Cant believe this has 12 dislikes😢Shockin!😯
Little did we know that he had a third eye 👁️. A proper 🌟 child.
David is the best thing that ever happened to me❤️❤️
This is my absolutely favourite David’s song! David forever.... God bless us. Paola, Roma Italia
i love this song with my entire soul
Such an Amazing song, from the album that changed my life. How about you? Thank you David
Changed everything. Days at the Glasgow Apollo with Ronno at his side are some of the best moments of my life.
Love this song as all of bowies work per genius ❤
Ronson on backup vocals and the Piano?
Yes... Epic.
It's not Garson?
@@zanichbug Ronson played it on the album. Garson never joined until Aladdin Sane.
This song was big to me before i came out as trans. Cuz the lyrics were so literal to my life
Really ?
Mister Sussex, this is a touching, beautiful video. Thank you from the deepest of my Bowian heart.
Emozionante la sua voce profonda... ti stringe il cuore e ti fa sognare!!!!
this is perhaps your best cut. incredible footage.
Gotta love your videos a lot!!! I hope a clip from Five Years comes soon to this amazing channel
my grandad was at the rainbow theatre gig in ‘72, i’ve never been more jealous in all my life lol
A la 16ème seconde, on prend un coup au coeur !
David Bowie era un extraterrestre un alieno, come lo siamo anche tutti noi, tutti noi veniamo dalle stelle.
He's the commander.....we are the space cadets
