The Song of a Broken World
    My salvation fades away
    My body froze in place
Even now, the sky is still so dark
    The stopped clocks
    The unsounding machines
That my voice could not reach
    This is my curse
The depth of the sins I committed
    Was your wish
But for embracing this impure soul, I will redeem
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's worthless, I still cry out
The song of that broken world
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's meaningless, I still wish
Simply for a future together with you
May your smiling face on that day… Lovingly disappear…
    The greenery overflows,
    And the lives spilling forth,
Even now, the wind is still so far away
    The peeling rust
    And the twisting blade
There in the forest of lurking death
    This is my curse
The pain of killing a promise
    Was your wish
But for throwing away my very last dream, I will atone
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's worthless, I still cry out
The love of this corrupted world
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's meaningless, I still wish
Just for more time together with you
May your drowned consciousness... Gently disappear…
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's worthless, I still cry out
The song of that broken world
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's meaningless, I still wish
Just for a future together with you
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's worthless, I still cry out
The love of this corrupted world
    And so we right now
Ah, even though it's meaningless, I still wish
Just for more time together with you
Even if my prayers will not grant me forgiveness, I…

When Final Fantasy 14 released its 'Nier Automata' themed 24 man raids during its Shadowbringers Campaign, the last bossfight of the first raid in the series of 3 had an empowering version of Weight of the World play. Instrumental, 'lyrics' in the 'nonsense' language....people were all pumped up and hyped......and then, they went to UA-cam, listened to the various versions, and people ended up crying after this version.

The massive balls they had to keep it in and make it a natural inclusion. (Just as massive Balls as are flying towards you in Eve's final fight)
I have goosebumps now and am shivering. If there ever was perfection in a musical piece they've totally nailed it with this one.
One of the best pieces of all eternity.

@@CursedHatter More than that, End of YorHa is comprised of many, many members of staff who collectively came together to sing it. The true emotion of End of YorHa though requires the context of the fact that you only experience it when you unlock the true and final ending. It is like Shane said, it is the 'swan song' of the endless cycle that is Project YorHa and us as players decide to break that cycle. Which is why you are joined by many, many, many, other players through out the world to break that cycle and when you understand that these players CHOSE to sacrifice their 50+ hours of gameplay to help a random stranger succeed...that is when the song chokes me up. Standalone I do prefer this version more though.

Each of the main characters has their own version of this song:
2B (ending 1) - English (''But the truth is that I'm only one girl'')
9S (ending 2) - Japanese (''Just for a future together with you'', also 'boku' is a male pronoun 'I')

You know that in japanese "boku" it is normally used by boys, but girls use it too, and it is mostly reffered to girls who are tomboyish, just the way 2B is, she is a beautifull woman, but she too is tomboyish and in VA japanese actress is the same as Mikasa from attack on titan :P

    • @HenSt-gz7qj
      @HenSt-gz7qj Рік тому +11

"boku" is like the informal way of saying "I", similar to "ore" (which is often associated with gangster or any rough type character).
from the context of the lyrics I think the english one is about A2, she has been trying to atone for her "past mistakes" and been trying to fight alone (only one girl).
while the Japanese one is about 2B, because of her back story (from the stage show and book). But it could be about both 2B and 9S too, as it uses "bokura" (we) pretty often. I think the first part is about 9S and the 2nd part is about 2B.
then the chaos language is the cultivation of every characters.

Another fun fact, "boku" is often more commonly used in Japanese songs for female singers to refer to themselves because it's easier to fit in instead of the usual feminine usage of "watashi" or "atashi" which are longer.

The way that ending works out had me bawling. You’re literally fighting the developers, refusing the fates of the characters written into the game, deciding you know these characters deserve a chance that the game’s writers didn’t think they deserved. Yoko Taro is a notoriously cynical, almost nihilistic, man and by choosing to undertake that ending and then sacrificing your save data so others can do the same, you’re literally telling Yoko Taro that people are worth fighting for. It’s the best ending in any game in my view.

Ending E of Automata was the only ending in a game powerful enough that I was actually left at a complete profound loss. The sheer depth of emotion in this piece especially, after the already deeply intense events of the final route, was just so incredibly mezmorizing. You feel the loss, the suffering, but also the intense defiance and inspiration to fight for a better future, you feel real hope in a very raw form. It's single-handedly raised the bar for me when it comes to meaningful game creation across the board.
Damn you Yoko Taro, you beautiful bastard.

    Japanese lyrics :
    The vanishing salvation,
    The washed away body,
And the sky is still dark even now,
The clock that has stopped moving,
The machine that makes no sound,
And I couldn't hear my voice (anymore)
This is my curse, the depths of sin I've committed.
Your wish, even with this corrupted soul,
    I will redeem it!
    And so, we right now
Even if it's worthless, we still cry out
the song of the broken world.
    And so, we right now
Even if it's meaningless, we still hope
Only for a future with you
As the lovely smile from that day,
    Disappearing...
    The overflowing greenery,
    The wasted lives,
Even now, the wind's still faraway
    The peeled off rusts,
    The twisted blade,
    The forest where death lurks
    This is my curse,
The pain of killing a promise
    The wish of yours,
With my last dream that I threw away,
    I will atone for it!
    And so, we right now
Even if it's worthless, we still shout out
The love in this tainted world.
    And so, we right now
Even if it's meaningless, we still hope
Just for a time to be with you
    As my drowning consciousness
    Slowly disappeared...
Even thou my prayers won't grant me forgiveness,
    I...

It’s common for people to love and remember one of the first interactions of the game in which 2B states to 9S, “Emotions are prohibited.” In contrast with such an emotionally compelling song to bookend it all, but now I’m thinking about the games structure as a whole: in which it builds on top of already established songs adding more purpose, music, and humanity as you learn more about not only the world, but the deeply flawed characters you are on this journey with. The ways the music reflects this understanding and openness to emotions…

I also absolutely love the fact that when you make your own message there are options to create negative remarks, like "You should give up, you can't do this" etc. And yet in multiple playthroughs I never saw one single negative message.

To add on the pile of things that have been called about the Ending E version of the song, the chorus in the background are actually the game devs including Yoko Taro !
The game actually has a story close to what Final Fantasy 1 was where it's the "last shot" kind of and the game dev team participating in the very last song like this makes this a love letter to everything this game stands for in my heart !
Anyways much love and if you do enjoy songs like this I can only advise "Hoshi to bokura to" from Persona 5, another send off masterpiece !

I rememeber hearing this song transition towards the E ending and realizing the meaning of the E ending mini game to achieve it to what it means and seeing others saved data come in when the chorus grows. It made me cry. I could go such much more into detail the meaning of the E ending and the significance of this all. The song is a hopeful song towards in the end its more rather a song of second chance when you play it along with the game.

Nier automata is one of my favorite games of all time. I can’t tell you how many times me or my wife cried during it. And during the end credits I was crying heavier and heavier especially when the choir hit and just gahhhhhhhh the 8bit version of weight of the world hits different, it starts off almost friendly and childish then just builds and builds until you’re just hit with the weight of it all and you realize just how important and how meaningful everything is that’s going on right then and there.

Ahhhh been waiting for this! And it's the emotional Japanese version! This track hits sooo hard, especially at the Credit Boss Fight, where all those questions pop up and you have to fight through the cast but you are slowly getting overwhelmed, but then the people who gave their "life" (save files lol) come to rescue you, IF you accept it. And so can you, turn in yourself too, to help others. As 2B says in the beginning: Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never-ending spiral of life and death.
The game does an excellent job of showing just that. And this song makes you really understand, that no matter the circumstances, you must carry on, even if the future ain't as bright and hope is dying.

Kowareta Sekai no Uta is quite likely my favorite iteration of this song, aptly named "A Song for this Broken World." Lyrically, it's the breaking of a heart, making the vocalist crying that much more impactful. The little touch of the "... Boku wa..." at the end was the best way to have ended it - it carried the weight of the last tear to fall, and stands out for the complete lack of hope the other versions carry.

And then I delved into the Weight of the World reaction videos. It's impossible for me to even hum the song (or even remember it!) without getting emotional. And I don't think due to the connection to the story. I think it's independent from that. There's something about this song and the way it is performed in its various versions that just goes straight for the heart and soul and squeezes. In a good way. A bittersweet way.

The drums/bass really make me think of This Silence is Mine, the song from Drakenguard 3. I don't know if it's because the themes of the songs are somewhat similar (I must go on, I must carry this weight) but the drums/bass sound so similar to me, even though This Silence has this harsher emptiness to it while Weight of the World has a more soft hopeful feel. I haven't played Automata but I think it would be neat if there was that connection there like that.

Light spoiler warning? I try to be vague.
I have listened to this song many times over the past couple years. For the first time I actually went and beat endings C D and E. I don't cry easily. I wasn't raised to cry. Pieces of media have made me break 2 times in the past 27 years of my life. Today it became 3. Nier ending E broke me. Not at first. But as I struggled and finally failed and the game asking me if I was going to quit trying.
No. No. No. No. I won't give up. I won't fail here. Then I found out I wasn't alone. It resonated with an experience I've dealt with this year. Having to force myself to keep going even when I really really wanted it all to stop. Being knocked back into it again and again and then finally being helped out of it. It broke me.
Listening to this song after that experience brings that tightness in my throat. Wetness at the corners of my eyes. It doesn't break me like the ending did, but it hits so much harder than it did 24 hours ago.

I've always preferred the Japanese lyrics for this song as they convey a much more hopeless feeling vs. The English lyrics. One of the many beautiful things about this game is that although there are several different endings, none of them feel particularly "good" or "bad". Every one of them has a bittersweet quality to them, because no matter what, the characters have gone through so much and lost so much.
Its so hard to choose favorites when discussing VGM, but I would be remiss if I didn't count this track among the top of the list.

i just heard that in the intro and i was already halfway to tears, its been quite a couple of years i have to say, and well they keep coming don't they?
Funnily enough hearing the song gives me a feeling of hope, painful and excruciating hope but hope nonetheless.
The game throws you through so many twists and turns, both emotional and the convoluted plot kind. But at the end of all that gives you a pretty simple and straightforward message to hold on too, i of course wont spoil it here but i will say that sometimes you don't need a deep philosophical debate about how to live your life, sometimes a single word or action is all you need to answer the hardest questions.

    • @trevorveillette8415
      @trevorveillette8415 2 роки тому +2

the tower is essentially the song of suffering.
the song feels like a character is limping forward to hope, but only finds more pain and suffering. it's a song of no return.
the song to me is best described as a never ending hopeless limp through suffering.
it's such a sad song. when it plays in the Game, you feel the weight behind these characters lives and what they've been through, and it hits so much harder too if you read the novels and uncover the lore in general.
my personal mental image for "the tower" as a song is 2B painfully limping in a white void with blood splattered on the ground and her. she's limping forward toward a white light. to the side of her are countless memories of her killing 9S. she's crying seeing them all play out before her eyes again. she keeps going towards the light ahead of her, and when she reaches it, it's 9S. she breaks down sobbing while hugging him, then kills him. she gets up and limps forward to her next light of hope. and that's where the song restarts/loops.
that's how I've always pictured the song. 2B may not be alive during the part of the game this song plays, but it feels the most fitting for her.
I mentally time her footsteps with the heavy low chords of the piano. makes it sound like heavy, labored footsteps. like a struggle to walk, and to find the will to walk.

I think you'll love Nier's soundtracks, almost all of them give you that emotional feel of hope, pain, and the unique sound which I think Nier games perfectly encapsulates. Kaine's Salvation is one of my favorites and Vague Hope incorporates a Chaos language (as they call it the language of the machines) lyrics that have no definite meaning but hearing it brings a wave of sentiments. Hearing this for the first time did tear me up, I also read that the creators of the game thought that instead of having another take of singing the song, they kept this version to show just the raw emotion of the song. Even the lyrics speaks really deep to the heart. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about it.

Honestly this is the kind of song that would play for a character, whether they’re from a video game or book, that literally feels like everything rests on them. Like if they have this mindset that despite all the allies and people supporting them, they really feel if they fail or even falter then the world will burn and it’ll be because of them. It’s a type of song that really puts you in their position or mindset because you’ll also be thinking at the end, “So many people are relying on me. I can’t let them down, it’ll be my fault if the world burns.”

Hey Marco, I usually don’t comment on videos but since I found your channel and have seen how emotional and profound you become when listening to music I had to give out some thoughts. It’s been a delight watching your videos and discovering so much good music. One can really see how much you connect with music on a deep and personal level like not many people do. I just love seeing people thrive for something they love. Anyways, I‘d like to recommend something myself if you don’t mind. The song is from a rather small indie game called „Far: Lone Sails“ and is called „Sun. Down.“ by Joel Schoch (a fellow german). It just makes me feel some way I can’t really describe, free but in a melancholic way (which is also sort of what the game is about, so perfectly fitting). I think it would also be kinda fun if you reacted to some good old Minecraft music, maybe something like „Dead Voxel“, which I love to listen to. Okay that’s it, have a great day y‘all :)

Speaking of Video Game Soundtracks, Transistor by Supergiant Games! Yes, THAT Supergiant Games, who created Hades. So, early in the PS4's life cycle, Supergiant released a game called Transistor, it's not a long game by any stretch either, and it was the first game they had published since Bastion (another classic game they created). In a way, this was Supergiant's homecoming, they hadn't released anything for 3 YEARS, and many had been curious as to where the studio went.
Transistor has a fascinating soundtrack due to the nature of it's story and world. The lead protagonist is a woman who is only mentioned as "Red", due to events at the beginning of the game, she loses her voice. She's famous singer within the city of Cloudbank. Her sword carries someone who is only vaguely mentioned, we don't know their relationship other than some small hints throughout the game as it's never stated. The man inside the sword essentially narrates the story throughout by talking to Red, as Red can hear him. One of the neat features at the time was that you could hear him speaking through the speaker of the PS4 controller.
As you progress in the story they find small ways to communicate with each other, the way the storytelling was done was something I had never seen before. You were completely blind to this world or how it worked, to the protagonist and the man in the sword, but as the story continued you learned more about them, as vague as some of it felt, but it painted a picture without spelling it out for you, it allowed you to figure it out.
ANYWAY, had to gush on the story, because of how it pertains to the music. So, Red can't speak throughout the game, BUT SHE CAN HUM. This was one of the greatest most unique things a game had ever done with music for me. Every track in the game has a "hummed" version. Ashley Lynn Barrett (of Bastion fame) is the vocalist of all of the tracks with vocals and also the hummed versions, the way the hummed tracks are used in the game is one of those moments I honestly have never forgotten.
I'd highly recommend the game itself as it isn't the longest (Roughly 4-5 hours, can be finished in a single sitting, and generally you can find all the bits and bobs. There's a new game plus but it's not a required journey.).
So on to the recommendation of music, "We All Become", "The Spine", "In Circles", and "Paper Boats". If you have to choose one, I'd recommend "We All Become".
