  • Chapter 2: This Vortal Coil - Part One
    After a short trek through Antlion caves, Freeman reunites with the Vort at a outpost deep in the mine, defended by Resistance fighters Griggs and Sheckley. After a fierce battle with attacking Antlions, Freeman joins the Vort in a quest to retrieve to Larval Extract, a substance found deep in the nest that is capable of healing the dying Alyx Vance. However, to get to the Larval clusters, they must first worm their way through tunnels and abandoned shafts that the Antlions have made their home.

    Notes:
    - Griggs is the only medic in the Half-Life games who can toss medkits to Freeman from afar
    - It is impossible for Griggs or Sheckley to die during the Antlion defense sequence
    - In-game strategy: one turret can easily hold off an entire wave of Antlions
    - Similar to Alyx, the Vort that accompanies Gordon has rapidly regenerating health, but can still die if overwhelmed by enemies
    Trivia:
    - The title of the chapter is a reference to the phrase "shuffle[d] off this mortal coil" from Shakespeare's Hamlet
    - The duo of Griggs and Sheckley was inspired by the real life comedy duo of Abbott and Costello, who gained enormous popularity during World War II
    - According to Portal writer Erik Wolpaw, Sheckley was named after science-fiction author Robert Sheckley
    - The conversation at 1:32 was meant to be for comedic purposes, but Valve discovered that some playtesters actually became worried that stepping on Grubs triggered Antlions to attack and proceed through the rest of the level avoiding them. However, in-universe it does explain why a bunch of Antlions attacked after Freeman enters the caves
    - The track that plays at 11:12 is called "Vortal Combat", an obvious reference to the video game series "Mortal Kombat"
    - "GET DOWN MR. PRESIDENT" moment at 15:08
    - Seems like some bored Resistance members were having fun with the Grubs as shown at 18:20
    - First instance of Fast zombies playing dead in a Half-Life game at 18:23
    - The Vort's line "What next in the parade of constant obstacles" at 22:43 is very similar to a line Dr. Magnusson utters later in the game ("What next in the parade of constant interruptions!"). Mark Laidlaw attributed this to the Vort's hive-minded nature and exposure to Magnusson
    - While the Vort seems to struggle with the concept of climbing a ladder, the noises at 23:03 indicate that he is familiar with them (though the animation is never shown)
    - The wrecked Combine transport pod at 26:01 seems to suggest that the Combine tried to infiltrate the Resistance outpost in the mines, but fell victim to the headcrabs instead
    - The Vort has special melee attacks for zombies, as shown at 27:18
    - The Vort makes several meta comments about the Half-Life series to Gordon:
    - At 18:52, he comments on Gordon's knack for physics (or barrel)-based puzzle-solving
    - At 24:03, he comments on Gordon's tendency to fall down deep pits only to have to climb back up (Blast Pit from HL1 comes to mind)

      Thanks! I'm not the best by any means, what you see in the video is just my best run after failing many times to get a good recording. I just run through these sections again and again until I get what I think will look great in a video!

    This is one of my favourite chapters in EP2 (tied with Our Mutual Fiend). The Antlion nest is gorgeous and you can really see how it inspired the look of Xen in Black Mesa. Being chased by the Guardian is pretty nerve racking, especially since it always seems to know where you are, no matter where you try to hide. On the other hand, it's also a pretty sympathetic enemy since it's just trying to defend its offspring/siblings (not sure if it's the one that lays the eggs or if it just defends them).
    The Vorts are especially awesome and fighting beside them is one of my favourite parts of HL2 and the episodes. EP2 in general really builds on their character, and I like how it shows them as individuals despite being semi hive-minded (e.g. Uriah is perfectly happy being an assistant to Magnusson, while the main Vort here seems like much more of a free spirit). I also like how it shows that there really is a lot of mutual respect between them and Gordon (the Vorts definitely shower Gordon with some pretty high praise throughout, and Gordon is also willing to trust the Vorts with his own life and Alyx's). For all the bleak mood of HL2, that's pretty wholesome.

      Yeah, I love this segment of the game as well. Definitely got a lot of Antlion Guardian vibes in Black Mesa's Gonarch's Lair chapter with the chases. Ditto on the increased focus on the Vorts. The game truly did them justice and I love how EP2 has a sense of hope throughout its length.

      Yeah the chase was good, still suffers from that there's one pathway.. this would been a really good area for them to actually have multiple routes, but like every opportunity for that was to shut down in this entire episode, not that it was really there before but.. like this wouldn't have even really gone out of the way or made it any less impactful, especially considering these are all scripted spawn ends, you just you just do it like normally when you have a choice somewhere you just have different segments for different sections...
      also would have been nice if that valve didn't make you step on everybody without using a fizz gun in no clip.. that was kind of brutal like no wonder they want to fucking kill you.. the only way through a valve level is the way through a valve level, they just confuse you sometimes by giving you a dynamic firefight or something every once in awhile...

    24:04 The first time i got trough this, the Vortigaunt scared the sh*t out of me.
    23:10 That sudden appear of the vortigaunt is kinda scary, don't you think?
    11:12 Props to you for making the Antlion fight so epic, that sync, those emotional movements trying to simulate communication, that teamwork made and that great scene of vortigaunts slaying those antlions... Great job on this!

    Wow... It's criminal just how few subscribers and views you get on these videos. Your commitment to re-creating the most cinematic gameplay... Cyncing up with the music, looking at all the important setpieces as they happen, taking detours to walk around and interact with the environment -- Most impressively, the way you'll usually pause to focus on an environmental piece or a puzzle hint before turning back around and engaging with the puzzle in question makes everything flow so fluidly... And it's like that on EVERY video... Stellar.

    Although the animation is never shown, I believe there are actually animations in the game files for the Vort climbing up the ladder at 23:03 !

      They die really easily to the shotgun - I use that as my main gun against them instead of the SMG, if that helps. Also, they can be flipped over with the gravity gun for an easy shot!

    I've watched all your HL2 walkthroughs Mr Sexy Nutella, and it was really epic and interesting. Though I got some questions if you don't mind:
    1) How do you find the Combine AI?
    2) What are your favorite Combine troops?
    3) Are you interested in Hard challenges?
    4) What do you think of the Combine Accuracy, Radio communication and design?

      Thanks! Yeah the vorts have a bunch of cool takedown animations when a zombie or antlion approaches them.

    Now I know there was something fucky going on with my game during that scene... I really don't know what it was, I didn't have any AI mods or anything like that.. but those fucking antlions were down the tunnel and intermixed with us on the first tunnel and just kept getting progressively worse after that also the numbers were insane, which is weird cuz I reloaded and I think they dropped by like half in terms of what they were swarming.. only way I was able to get through it was gravity gun flipping them, for some reason that works better than shooting them, possibly cuz they didn't respawn as fast.. super weird..

      @@Sexy_Nutella right LOL, something felt off about it, usually when that is the case it's because valve is trying to make me do something that I don't want to do.. and usually I knew about it beforehand, although this is the first time going through it I just remember sitting there like, this feels like I've got the VJ base going on or something, but not nearly as dynamic but definitely as brutal...

      LOL I wish I could be running the VJ base for all of this, but at that point I was having so much trouble just getting the game to not save corrupt I'd given up any sort of AI a long time ago, just trying to get through the episode campaigns since I had never played them before.. turns out it was actually a known issue, that nobody really talks about cuz nobody really talks about anything anyways...
      Turns out you can't really play the episodes in 64-bit LOL.. there's a very specific issue with the physics and save restoration, it's not all the time but it's well it happened a few times in episode 1 and it happened consistently in episode 2.. keeps you from progressing to the next level as well without a crash.. fortunately it seems like the 32-bit with all the multi-threading options, still using the beta build but selecting the 32-bit executable, seems to have about the same if not better performance..
      it's hard to tell whether or not it's the options that I went through to get the 64-bit to run smoother just also running smoother as well, or it could just be some random thing because LOL this game does that on your playthrough whether or not you've completely removed everything or not.. for level connects that more or less carry almost nothing through to the other side certainly not in event situations, this game has an interesting habit of falling apart the more you go through it.. permanently, requiring full reinstall etc and that it'll run you know with the same settings and mods just just dandy just fine like nothing's going on when you start the level from that point that it started just disintegrating.
      As I funny notion, getting the models to have the proper animation in the episodes versus the main campaign was the easiest part probably if all my troubleshooting, you just don't Mount them LOL go figure.. people talk about it and there's some mentions on a lot of the animation fix places and there's a whole subthread from a while back on the Garry's mod wiki and some of the valve Dev thing, they had a fix they took it out cuz it caused other problems but essentially you just change the mounting order..
      I thought it was funny that Half-Life 2 runs just fine and 64 bit for the most part, it's it's episode 2 the more modern version that just can't do it.. in fact I don't think you can find the 64-bit executable anymore in the beta branch, which might explain why it just don't work very well with 64-bit LOL in any context...
      Going to be interesting to see how they make that work on the steam deck LOL.. although I ran all my multi-threading optimizations on just a straight Half-Life 2, at least the ones that you could and the ones that didn't freeze you in place like.. multithreading support.. but all of the asynchronous whatnot.. and it ran smooth as butter.. it was vanilla so just utterly horrifyingly depressing, ended up messing around with for a few hours trying to remember all my bind aliases to fix things without having to actually open it up in the editor.. not being able to adjust the view model position is a real real downside, really sad they took that out of the basic console, and then also made the view model worse somehow? Like they shoved it way to the side, now I really don't understand how he's holding that shotgun, not even from the waste LOL.. it's like he's holding a sleeping bag under one arm...

      @@Sexy_Nutella almost wonder if valve was punishing me for trying to go out of my way to not step on the little guys.. considering that they basically made it so that without cheats you would step on most of them LOL.. cuz it's valve and valve has one way to go through a level... LOL when I came to that house it cracked me up cuz I realized I wasn't supposed to be outside it, just judging from the way they were trying to angle the scripting, it it surprisingly enough held up to a degree regardless in that they would able they spawned you know more hunters for their set piece you know where they break through and they're all super scary and stuff.. and yeah they just fucking break down like little bitches if you go outside the window and charge them LOL, combine scripting breaks down as well, they just really don't understand that you're outside the house.. they try to understand it but that entire set piece is like they turn combine into CPS basically.. and then at the very very end.. they turned them back on for the inside fight, or at least well I guess it was all supposed to be inside now that I realized I wasn't supposed to get outside the window lol...
      Like what the fuck was I supposed to do, shoot at hunters at distance LOL? Yes that's exactly what I was supposed to do.. coming from the episode one level design, that was just as Force but plausibly forced I guess, and more arena-based where it let this game's AI shine... To episode 2 where they basically just turned off the AI it seemed.. and it wouldn't matter because everything is so regimented, these guys come out here and then they do this and there's only really so much they can do before this section opens up etc and I know that's that's a valve game 101.. but the the moments that shine in the original and in episode 1 after the gates open and you can actually have a fight or at least pull out some semblance of one from scripted events...
      Episode 2 really felt like a call of duty campaign just without being able to well that no it's it's never that bad like you know like you still actually have to hit the w key, and interact is still the e key so that that actually does matter LOL.. I'll fucking die on that Hill, you don't press f for respects, f is for fuck you we bound q and e to the lean keys, forever cementing leaning as a cover system in people's heads instead of basic movement that should be in every game cuz you can't move and lean at the same time effectively.. but that's a whole another ramp and I've already done three I think at this point.
      But yeah, if anything I kind of want to figure out what caused the glitch more to see if I can get that to happen more often.. like it wasn't a good section for that to be given the tight quarters and the useless help, but in sections where you're not dependent on AI that is killable and can you know go full on from the ground up.. it was an interesting dynamic, and like I said in one of my other rants LOL it felt like when you're having a regular fight with VJ base NPCs, where they just don't give a fuck and do things like drop off a ledge and grenade launch you, within the confines of antlions of course..
      Which really aren't that fun to shoot.. and shit I thought we were friends LOL like sure, some cars were thrown... And the only reason I shot the nurse glow worms was cuz they were trying to kill the babies with the crazy crap flying everywhere.. I was helping dammit! remember remember that whole thing with the prison where I threw the bug bait in the wrong direction and then just tried to do as much as I could before you would show up and get shot again.. I guess I guess not...
      man this game should be an immersive Sim I mean all games should be for what's worth... like it wants to give you those mechanics and things like the physical manipulation etc.. like it doesn't have shooting controls for shit, and somehow it's managed to make them worse in 20 years.. but at its core, it wants to at least be like a hybrid like the last 20 years of Wolfenstein, barring the 2009 version and the strange multiplayer half-assed attempt to try to redo the 2009 version?
      It's almost like it gets in its own way, especially by the second episode really and and I guess maybe I'm in the vast minority here.. because people seem to really love this and and I don't get it but then I didn't really love what a lot of people loved about this series, or think that a lot of people were into was a good thing.. and I suppose that's a testament to that Counter-Strike has been the exact same game since 1.6, and like I've replayed Half-Life too back in the day and just doing these mods to try to get through the episodes I think I've gone through it three times and I've enjoyed the hell out of it.. like I don't mind locked linear set piece if done right and they do that right sometimes or at least they used to, here's hoping that Alex is different which I have to assume it is cuz it's VR, it's like every complaint that I've had about the gameplay and Half-Life 2 is turned up on its head with how they approached Alex so I can't not respect them for that..
      Apologies for starting a massive bitch thread.. it's all just kind of fresh in my head on this one, and surprisingly enough there are people that are still interested in a 15-year-old game but not a lot of places to talk about it like it's the next new thing in old things lol given that it isn't..

    a little gamer tip for next time you ever do this section: you dont need to check on Griggs and Sheckley, or even help them if they get overran. They have infinite health in this section and cannot die! dont worry about them
